Understanding neighborhood and communities The neighborhood, where I grew up was a middle-class family community. It was a simple area, everybody knew each other. The adults recognized how many children there are in each house. Most of the people were home owners, there were a few who rented but the residents make it their business to get acquainted with them. It was calm and pleasant neighborhood. The neighbors would go out and live their doors open with no worries. Safety was not an issue because their take care of each other. As a child I did not have anything to fear about except my homework in case I decided to go play before I was finish. Children walked back and forth to school with no adult supervision. A neighborhood is a place when we spend almost half of our life, a neighborhood can be used to talk about to the small group of houses in the close vicinity of one’s house or to a larger area with similar housing types and market values. As in the article “Southwest Philadelphia” by Michael McCauley, people houses were too close to each other and every one of them knew every single person who lived in every house on the street. They were like relatives. Same comparable an author story, I was born and grow up in a small neighborhood which is Kavaja city, in the middle of Albania. It is a quiet neighborhood with respectful neighbors, safe area and it is accessible to public transportation.

James is a thirteen-year old Caucasian child who is being physically and verbally abused in his home by his two parents. James suffers from multiple disorders that have not been diagnosed by a doctor. He has been removed from his home that he shares with his two younger sisters. James presently is in his Uncle Patrick’s kinship foster care where he is living. James’s case seems that he is suffering from three of the 12 core concepts. Working with children who suffer with more stress related trauma is a more challenging case for the social workers. I work directly with teachers of all class while one-on-one supporting students with mental health illness or learning disability. We discuss student’s learning style and work out possible teaching curricular. Our priority is to reduce learning stress and help students stay focused during class. More importantly, I daily spend an hour discussing student’s circumstances and needs with their counselors. Our discussion focus on how to better communicate with their parents, guardian to well informed them of students’ performance at school and listen to parent’s opinion and comment on the schools MHSP program. Last but not least, I meet with other social worker, psychologists and professionals who work or volunteer to work with our students in LPHS peace room and discuss about the goal and outcome of each students before and after taking part in our peace room. As social workers, it is important to study the entire aspect of the individual. We must examine the individual past and see if their condition is trauma-related. It is the job of the social worker to identify the issue, in this case it would be a person who suffers from a mental illness and is placed in isolation when in jail or person and find the best solution for that issue. The solution to the issue may not be what’s written in a handbook or what we were thought, but sometimes we must find alternate resolutions. While we may not have the answers to combat the issue; if as social workers we could find the root cause of the issue that may help in the intervention process.
Therapeutic sessions assist in enhancing the member’s individual’s thoughts as well as those they are building relationships with. The support that they have from family, friends, significant others and the community is essential in their well-being as interactions with others are crucial for development of a sense of self (Meyer, 2003).

Communities play an essential role in the development of the self and learning about the stranger. Through communities, individuals are able to socialize and gain a greater understanding of each other. A community can be defined in many different ways based on every individual’s experience with it. Developing a strong community takes time. Some people, like Jeannette Walls, do not have the opportunity to develop strong communities throughout their childhood.
As I observed the N.A. group, I compared Hepworth 's, Direct Social Work Practice, five stages of group development. The Preaffiliation stage involves observation and feeling out the environment of the group; members may be hesitant to speak or test out certain behaviors to see reactions from other members of the group or the facilitator (Hepworth, Rooney, Rooney, & Strom-Gottfried, 2017, 2013). Returning group members greeted each other with hugs, handshakes, pat on the back, while newcomers sat quietly observing others. What is an intervention? An intervention is interposition or interference in the affairs of another to accomplish a goal or end (“Intervention,” 2012). There are numerous theories being used to help guide social work practice. There are also a number of different practice interventions associated with each of these theories. The purpose of this study is to be able to understand the social, emotional and behavioral needs of siblings of children with autism. The human behavior theories that have been selected to help guide this study are the systems theory and the social learning theory. There are different practice interventions related to each of these theories.
Imagine that I won the lottery. What will I do with all that money I just won? Would I spend it on luxuries, things for myself? Yes. However, I would also give money out to the schools and homeless shelters that are helping children who have faced traumatic stress. In Laura Tillman’s article, “What does it take for traumatized kids to thrive?” describes a school that kids attend for misbehavior problems, but the reason kids end up at the school is because they have experienced some type of trauma in their lifetime. As someone who has never really face a serious type of trauma, I was surprised at what kids face and go through in their everyday life’s. As I had found in Laura Tillman’s article to be inspiring, very descriptive and supportive of the obstacles that people face in their everyday lives.
Social work within the school system is an important and necessary asset to have. It helps many students with a severity of problems that children and adolescents face, whether it be at home or at the school itself. The role of the social worker is to establish a working relationship between the school and the family. In addition, they also help make sure that the child’s needs are met, whether it be their academic achievement, social, emotional and behavioural competence. By observing the child in its environment, they establish what needs that child might have and they figure out how they can utilize that perspective on the child to ensure that they perform to the best of their abilities academically or socially. We are looking at the different polices and job duties that a social worker faces while working in a school, whether it is a child with mental health related issues or a child with learning disabilities.
