Piaget’s Stage Theory for an Early Childhood Classroom
The theories of Jean Piaget have probably had the most influence on our ideas about how young children learn. As I am learning to become an educator it is important that I understand the three main domains of development: physical, cognitive, and social. Starting from birth we are learning to develop and have an understanding of the big world around us. Piaget focused on the way an individual child acts upon objects in the environment in order to build mental models of the way the world works (Jean Piaget, n.d.). His theory of cognitive development is learned by using touch to process sensory perceptions. He suggests that children go through four different stages of mental development: Sensorimotor stage- birth to two years, Preoperational stage- two years to seven years, Concrete operational stage- seven years to eleven, and Formal operational stage- twelve years and up.

Ways to incorporate social learning into my classroom would be to have singing time every morning and showcase my class library with books that will enhance the mind. When you are younger you need social/emotional, language, fine motor skills, and perceptual experiences to help develop cognitive development (Cognitive Development Domain, n.d.). Technology has made its way into many classrooms creating ways that can help increase a child's cognitive development. The use of the Smart Board in the classroom will allow students to engage in different activities, such as Math, Science, and exercise. Cognitive development lets children learn through pretend play, but they still may struggle with logic and how to understand the idea of being consistent. The use of media in my classroom need to be set up in a way that allows the students to stay
