Chapter eight is about promoting communication and language development in early childhood education. Early communication is mostly non-verbal. Communication goes beyond the words we use; it develops with the use of gestures, facial expressions, hand movements and positioning of our body. Some of the first displays of communication by infants include, smiling, fussing and looking at an area, person or object. Saumya Patel is 5 years old. He attends Kindergarten at Sumter County Primary School in the Sumter County School System. Saumya is very intelligent, and is very far ahead of many of the students on his level. He is very independent, and he is very capable of doing many things on his own. The three early childhood organizations that I found were NAEC, Association for Early Learning Leaders, and Zero to Three. All three of them would be ones I could or would eventually join as an Early Childhood educator. As someone who wants to teacher toddlers, preschoolers or kindergarten they all would be beneficial to my future.

In my first semester of college at Concordia, I had the opportunity to have the class EDU 120. A requirement for this class was having 10 hours of fieldwork; at least 3 hours in each level of childhood. The reason for this requirement is to help the students discover what grade level they want to teach in the future.

Early years practitioners should be aware of the developmental, learning and care needs of children in their care. By completing regular observations on the children, talking to the parents/carers and looking out for any changes in the children’s behaviour, I can ensure that I am aware of a child’s changing needs. Throughout my observations and discussions with parents/carers I must be open to the possibility that a child in my care could have a safeguarding issue. It is my responsibility as an early years practitioner to attend safeguarding training and to keep up to date with new legislation and guidelines. In this essay, I will discuss my experience during middle and late childhood. I will address three stages which are the physical, cognitive, and socioemotional development. The physical development consists of body and brain growth, health issues, and motor skills. The cognitive development consists of language, memory, and attention. Socioemotional development is based on relationship, employment, and personality.

The issue that I have selected focuses on the importance of children and youth receiving early intervention, special education, and other related services under Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Part B. IDEA includes 14 specific categories under which children may be found eligible for early intervention, special education, and related services. Those 14 specific categories include the following: (1) autism, (2) deaf-blindness, (3) deafness, (4) developmental delay, (5) emotional disturbance, (6) hearing impairment, (7) mental retardation, (8) multiple disabilities, (9) orthopedic impairment, (10) other health impairment, (11) specific learning disability, (12) speech or language impairment, (13) traumatic brain injury, and (14) visual impairment including blindness (Institute of Education Sciences.
