Screening tools used by these professionals would support early recognition and referral of children with questionable development. Therefore, when nurses carry out routine well-child visits, they should consider a critical opportunity to obtain developmental information which help in the identification of children with developmental delays such as autism. These children, if treated as early as possible with the best interventions available, will have a better life with academic achievement, higher IQ, better job opportunities, decrease criminal history, etc. Furthermore, nurses are educators and have the responsibility in helping parents to understand the developmental milestones and inform them of the available community resources to support families with an autistic child. Education is important because parents have the responsibility to help and teach their child affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders …show more content…
However, with this screening tool, false positives may occur (Williams et al., 2015). Because of this, the M-CHAT-R tool was developed and it is more sensitive, and detects 67 per 10,000 cases of autism (Williams et al., 2015). If the risk is low; the child is reevaluated at the 24-month-old. If medium risk, then a follow-up questionnaire called M-CHAT-R/F is given. These screening tools are easy, efficient, and reliable to assess the risk of Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) (Williams et al., 2015). Many nurses lack familiarity with these screening tools and also don’t have time to screen children for ASD. This article helps nurses to prevent barriers in screening children with early developmental
The first three years of a child’s life is the most important and central time for the brain’s development. Autism is a disorder that can be diagnosed during the infant or toddler stage. Children can be diagnosed with autism by having different impairments such as social interaction, pattern of behavior, eye contact and speech impairment. Having the child being diagnosed with ASD can change a parent’s life view. Parents can learn different things in order to help their child. Parents will be provided by health providers different treatment, different placement in education and knowing about the different risk factor to make a difference for their autistic child now and in the future.
Whether a diagnosis of autism, or diagnosis of another disability is to be made, interventions can be developed to add the child 's “tool belt” on their waist of life. Research shows that the early intervention can highly impact the likelihood of success (Krader, 2014). The American Academy of pediatric tells us that the diagnosis procedure should start in children between 18 and 24 months. With the essential screening process, recommendations can be used to begin intervention and start the help that the child needs. As we have seen through research, not all children receive testing that proves equality (Krader, 2014).

All across the United States of America, police officers are unfortunately, due to the lack of funding, being laid off, prisoners are being set free, the court systems are being bombarded with cases and the overall crime rate in this country continues to climb higher and higher despite our efforts to lower it. Since the economic crisis in 2008 resulting in our country falling into a recession, the criminal justice system has been forced to make cuts all the way to the very foundation. Many states throughout America were forced to release a large number of their prisoners early because of a lack of funding. For example the State of Florida released over 2500 of their inmates due to the budget crises caused by the recession. The State of
The results of a study designed to identify children previously undiagnosed with ASD was presented at the International Meeting for Autism Research (IMFAR). This study finds that, with little effort, daycare and preschool teachers can effectively screen children for ASD. Teachers were asked to complete the Social Communication Questionnaire or the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT) form. These checklists are used to identify children who are at high risk for
The author Kraft, Ulrich talks about if autism can be detected early on it can be treated opportunity when the brain is going underwire during development time. The article talks about how important it is to start early diagnosis when the brain is still “strengthening and pruning neural networks”.
Utilizing 3 managed care organizations (MCOs) database, a case-control study was conducted on n = 1,008 children (256 cases and 752 controls) aged 0 – 2 years who were born between January 1, 1994, and December 31, 1999, continuously.3 Upon completion of the study, and consent of the parents, data were later collected from the children who now range in ages 6-13 year. In addition, children who were susceptible to developing autism spectrum disorders (ASD) were exempted from the study. 3
My interest in child health first began when my brother was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. In fact, this has motivated me to become a Developmental Behavioral Pediatrician. Moreover, during my internship this past summer, I was able to work alongside developmental pediatricians and interact with patients. During this time, I was provided with the opportunity to learn first-hand how the physicians and students completing their fellowships assessed behaviors linked to ADHD, Autism, anxiety, and Down syndrome. Furthermore, I also observed ADOS screening for children and learned from the physicians, which forms of behavior were a cause for concern. ADOS stands for Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule it is a structured assessment that
Autism disorder is an issue facing many people today. It’s an issue widely discussed in the news and social media. In Gale’s data from 2015 defines autism as a general term for a group of complex disorders of the brain development that are grouped together under the broader term of autism spectrum disorder also known as ASD. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as of 2014, about 1 in 68 out of 1,000 children were diagnosed with ASD. This was a dramatic increase from 1 in 150 children in 1992. The CDC also
This paper will cover many aspects of Autism Spectrum Disorder, also commonly known as ASD. It will identify reginal, national and global statistics of the occurrence of ASD, predisposing factors, usual signs and symptoms of ASD, and tests used for diagnosis. It will also analyze both medical, surgical and psychosocial aspects of the care needed by patients with ASD, interdisciplinary interventions, comorbidities commonly associated with Autism, and the prognosis of these patients. Lastly it will identify several implications for best nursing practice and interventions that may be helpful in the care of these patients.
The Mobile Autism Risk Assessment (MARA), conducted by Duda, Daniels, and Wall (2016), is an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) screen used to classify those who are at high risk for ASD. “ASD is characterized by significant impairments in communicative abilities and social skills along with repetitive or atypical behaviors” (Duda, Daniels, & Wall, 2016; p.1953). It is important to have screening tools to help identify people at risk for ASD. Level 2 screening tools are used to differentiate ASD from other behavioral or developmental conditions. This study wanted to test a new parent/caregiver Level 2 screening tool for ASD, the MARA, to distinguish ASD from other developmental/behavioral disorders.
Have you ever heard of “The Star of David?” The Star of David is a widely recognized symbol of Judaism, named after King David of ancient Israel, which consists of two interlocking equilateral triangles. According to legend, the Star of David may have originated from the Shield of David. It may also have evolved from the mysterious Seal of Solomon (five-pointed star) that was used in the ancient world as a talisman. However, the star's pedigree as a common Jewish symbol did not become widespread until the late Middle Ages. Since that time, it has become one of the defining symbols of Judaism along with the more ancient symbol of the Menorah. The star has been used to adorn the cover of the Torah, and it is found on Jewish synagogues
