e Manhattan Project was a research and development project that produced the first nuclear weapons during World War II. It was led by the United States with the support of the United Kingdom and Canada. People basically were offered job in this new city called Oak Ridge, Tennessee. They weren't told much other than they were helping their country by working here. Little did they know they would be creating an atomic bomb for the war. People living there were not told any information. The government never expected a close knit city to form, but it did. People became a community in the area of Oak Ridge. Each plant had different purposes, they were all built with a plan, but in a fast amount of time. However, wartime constraints limited the availability of labor and materials. Rather than spending lots of time building houses, houses were adjusted to fit the contours of the land. Most of Oak Ridge’s kitchens faced the street to minimize the length of plumbing and utility lines. In the video we watched, it showed people stories who had lived and worked in Oak Ridge. I’m not saying that these people weren't curious at what they were doing; but they had so much trust in our country they did not try and find out. As long as these people thought they were helping their country, they were content with their jobs Around the town there was propaganda posters to constantly remind the people what they were doing. Much of what originally brought people to Oak Ridge can still be seen: three of four plants used to produce material for the atomic bomb survive.
