Packing in multiple flavors that vary from fruits to cotton candy, e-cigarettes, short for electronic cigarettes, have emerged into the spotlight as a popular alternative for tobacco as of recent years. In particular, the culture of tricks and vibrant colors in these cigarettes have attracted youths to explore for themselves. On the surface, the lack of tar in these flavored alternatives seem to be all the more harmless. In fact, e-cigarette companies are now legal to sponsor events targeted for young adults, as opposed to traditional tobacco brands. However, this product still poses as a potential health threat for users. The nicotine used commonly in e-cigarettes are inevitably addictive and entail multiple health risks. The fact of the matter is, the rising popularity for e-cigarettes among youths puts them at stake for their own lives. Therefore, e-cigarettes should be treated with the same restrictions as tobacco, effectively closing the window for potential health concerns for the next generation. Recent discoveries from a research team based in Athens unveiled that the health effects of smoking an e-cigarette for 30 minutes is approximately equivalent to smoking a regular cigarette for 5 minutes. Additionally, the e-cigarettes were found to cause heart stiffening; which can potentially result in cardiovascular diseases. Though one may argue that the damage is still minimal for e-cigarettes as opposed to traditional tobacco products, at the end of the day, long term usage will result in similar chronic diseases.
