The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald was one of my favorite books I read in school. I loved the way he portrayed the American dream throughout the book. Gatsby changed his entire lifestyle in order to impress his long time love interest, Daisy. In the end, he realized that all of the material things did not matter and his American dream was tied to his love for her. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins was the first dystopian book series I read. I loved it and it sparked my love for mystery novels. Collins allowed me to feel everything with Katniss and the other characters. The idea of turning children against each other for the public’s entertainment still leaves me speechless. Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan was my go to series throughout middle school. I always had one of these books in my hand. I loved the idea of half bloods walking around amongst everyday people and having this secret life. I loved reading about the character’s lives and seeing them become adults. …show more content…
It made me feel like I was actually in the book with the main character, Abby, who lost her husband at war. I felt like I was with her through all of the struggles she had while coping with her husband’s death. Divergent by Veronica Roth was another series about a dystopian society that I read. I fell in love with the characters and was constantly putting myself in their shoes. I always wondered if I would have been able to do the things Tris did while she was a part of dauntless, and I thought Veronica Roth did a great job making it seem possible and

The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, provides a dark and pessimistic outlook into the American life style in 1922. Jay Gatsby, an American wealthy social identity, appears to have it all. But wealth, stature and an extravagant lifestyle seems not to be enough for Gatsby; he still yearns for his old idealistic love Daisy. In an ideal world this has the making of a great love story with a happy ending, but Fitzgerald chose to carry the story as a reflection of the American era the book is set in. An era consumed by appearances and excess and overall pursuit of the American dream.

I loved the emphasis on family in this book. From Emily’s parents (mother, adoptive father and biological father) down to Oz, his family, and the club, which was a family in and of itself, these characters had such a strong protectiveness for each other, especially when it came to one of them being in any type of danger. Olivia, who had raised Oz as a child, was one of my very favorite characters. So strong-headed, even despite her struggles. Such a powerful person to have as a part of their
