Dyslexia is a disability in which the brain has trouble processing when doing basic tasks such as reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Dyslexia is thought by some to just be the cause of laziness, but it is in fact a real condition. People who suffer from dyslexia are not “slow.” In fact, dyslexic students often have average or above average intelligence. Some symptoms of dyslexia include the misspelling of words, the inability to clearly express what they feel through language, confusing the order of letters, and struggling with reading out loud. Dyslexia can be detected by knowing the symptoms of the condition and going to a doctor to see if you/your child is truly dyslexic. Educators can help develop language skills in dyslexic students
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines dyslexia as a disorder in the brain that makes it difficult for an individual to write, read, and spell. People who have been diagnosed with the learning disability are often thought to be “lazy, dumb, careless, ‘not trying hard enough,’ or [have] behavior problems” according to Ronald D. Davis, founder of the Davis Dyslexia Correction Center.
Books like chicka chicka boom boom By: Bill Martin Jr This is a great book for beginner readers who are learning to read. It show’s the letters of the Alphabet in a way that is fun for kids. My daughter truly loved this book. We read this book all the time. There is also a little cartoon that goes along with this book. Which is pretty cute to watch.

One of my primary focuses was to find out how different literatures dealt with Dyslexia and how best to support the child. Dyslexia can be described from a number of different perspectives as we see in Ball et al (2007) who explain that it can be “how one learns (Cognition), what parts of the brain are involved (neurology), what genes are involved (genetics) and behaviour (p14). Their book entitled ‘Dyslexia: An Irish perspective’ is very relevant to my research as it gives a great insight into the history of the special education sector in Ireland. It also looks into some of the key debates that are facing the educational sector today.
Children with dyslexia give many signs to help identify them. Some of the clues include, not knowing whether to use the left or right hand after being reminded repeatedly, leaving out capital letters or losing using them in the wrong places reading a word correctly but does not comprehend, forming letters numbers badly, and forgetting to dot I’s and cross t’s (Make the Connection). They may spell the same word several different ways if they don’t have the visual memory to know what is right or the kinaesthetic memory for it to feel right as they are writing (Information on Dyslexia). These are some clues to look for in writing. Some other indications are late developer, easily distracted, problems with tying shoe laces, problems telling time, short term memory problems, holds pen too tightly, and has problems with sequences. Some examples of sequences that a person with dyslexia might have trouble with include alphabet, months of the year, and nursery rhymes. Dyslexia is a lifelong struggle with constant challenges with reading and speaking. About five to ten percent of the United States population deals with the learning disorder dyslexia (Van den Honert, n.d.). It is a neurological condition that is mainly caused by genetics but there are some rare cases in which it is acquired. Dyslexia interrupts the normal processes of reading and speaking (Van den Honert, n.d.). All of which are used in daily life and this makes life and school so much harder for dyslexics. When I first started school I did not have the easiest time, when I was young I had dyslexia and this made it extremely hard for me to keep up with everyone else and since I was always working behind everyone else I had a hard time making friends. I would always get special treatment to help me but I never wanted it, I always felt embarrassed and I just wanted to be like everybody else but it was years before I got that, there were multiple occasions where I would go to bed not knowing if I would be able to stay in my school or have to start all over again somewhere else. Growing, developing and learning are the facts of life for all children. Each day children are faced with many new concepts and various challenges. Can you imagine how it feels for a child to face not only new challenges life has, but to face these challenges while living with a learning disability? These challenges are met not just when they begin school either. Students suffer from learning disabilities from the moment they begin learning, not when they start school. Learning disabilities are real and they affect millions of people. “One such disability that affects over approximately 15 percent of the total American population is dyslexia” ( Nosek 5).

On the other hand, my weaknesses vary with each population. My weakness with children is that some days I cannot be impatient. If a child is showing negative behaviors and I cannot gain control, I will walk out of the room or ask a colleague to step in for me to calm myself down. As for completing paperwork, I can get overwhelmed, however, I have learned and practiced organization skills to keep me up to date on deadlines. Finally, a weakness that has affected my cognitive abilities throughout high school and college is my dyslexia. Some of us in the world may have problems with reading, spelling, and other academics. You might not know why they cannot read or spell as well as you can because they have a disorder. Of the three previously mentioned diseases, Dyslexia impairs a person’s ability to read, write, and spell (NINDS 2003). Although they are of normal intelligence, their reading level is below average. They will usually have “trouble with phonological processing (the manipulation of sounds) and/or rapid visual-verbal responding.” (NINDS 2003). Children with dyslexia complain they cannot read their textbooks, do not have enough time to finish tests, cannot take notes, and are unable to read their own handwriting (GVSU 2000). Dyslexia does not affect every person the same way, and signs of the disorder may not be prevalent until later, when grammar and more in-depth writing skills are introduced.
