This quote relates to the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding and is a great way to explain what Golding wants the reader to get out of this novel. This book is about London school boys that are on a plane to get to safety from the war, and their plane gets shot down. Many of the boys survive the crash and live on the island for a time. There are many conflicts between the boys while they are trying to survive on an island all by themselves with no adults. By looking at Simon as the best in mankind, Jack as the worst, and Ralph as “everyman” who embodies both sides, Golding …show more content…

Of all the characters in the novel, Simon is the one who best represents the good of mankind. In all of Simon's actions, he helps others. For example when the littlest boys on the island, “The Littluns”, are hungry, “ Simon found for them the food they could not reach”(56). Additionally, when the other boys on the island accuse piggy of not helping Simon is the boy who comes to his defense: “We used his specs,” said Simon…” He helped that way” (42). In both of these examples, Simon takes care of the others, in a way that the rest of the boys are not willing to do. In addition, Simon sees the truth in a situation better than the other boys. Simon seems to have a gift for seeing part of the future. He predicts that Ralph “will get back alright” (111). He is also the only boy able to see that the beastie is a part of them: “I’m close,
