The effects of alcohol include blurred or double vision, impaired attention and slowed reflexes. Your life and the lives of others can change forever if you drive after drinking alcohol.

Fatalities that occur suddenly can be more difficult to deal than anticipated death because members of the family are not well prepared. Sudden losses are even more difficult to process when a person is killed violently knowing that it could have been prevented if it wasn’t for another person’s negligence. These actions often cause strong emotions, and anger. Sometimes family members will experience violent thoughts, or will consider doing things that are out of personality, leading to suicide. In addition, Family members are financially affected after losing their loved ones. The cost of medical bills, phone bills, travel, counseling, and the funeral can be devastating to families with a small budget causing more suffering and pain. For the survivors of crashes caused by drunk drivers, who have life sentence injuries their pain and suffering is just starting, while the offender is having his life back without any injuries or scratches. In most cases, crash survivors will live the rest of their life with pain, isolation, endless medical bills, and would depend on others for the rest of their lives.

Causes of drinking and driving are various. Some partake in this crime to gain attention from their peers, while some do it solely because their judgment is impaired and it seems like it is not that big of a deal. Let me tell you that the majority of automobile accidents in America results from alcohol. The alcohol consumed will be existed in blood and it is known as Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC). In this condition, someone will experience lowered alertness which can cause someone to loss of judgement and reduce their ability to track moving object. The most devastating consequence of driving under the influence is the loss of life. When you’ve been drinking and decide to drive yourself home drunk or intoxicated that is risking a lot. Not only is it risking your life, its risking the other people around you. There may be someone walking down the street and from a drunken person eyes they aren’t close to hitting them but in reality they actually hit the person who is walking down the road and it kills them. Now the drunk driver doesn’t only have to go to jail for not only driving intoxicated but he also has to look the deceased family in their eyes and plead guilty for killing that person while driving intoxicated. In 2013, 10,076 people were killed in drunk driving incidents. Out of those people, 65% (6,515) were drivers, 27% (2,724) were passengers, and 8% (837) were non-passengers (“Drunk Driving Statistics”). Over half of those fatalities (67.1%) involved blood alcohol levels over .15% (“Drunk Driving Statistics”). The legal blood-alcohol content is .08%. Drunk driving caused 31% of deaths in car crashes in 2013 (“Drunk Driving Statistics”). In 2012, 402 people were killed by alcohol impairment in North Carolina (“Drunk Driving Statistics”). These numbers, though they seem astonishing, have been cut in half since 1991 (“Drunk Driving Statistics”). Even though the number of fatalities has been lowered, that number is not low enough. Most drunk drivers are repeat offenders. Lives are being taken because of the careless attitude of the drunk drivers. Drunk driving is selfish; those who commit this crime do not think about the extreme consequences of their actions. In North America it is estimated that 1-5 drivers has been drinking and 1 in 10 is legally impaired on any Friday or Saturday night (Root). Many groups, including MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), are fighting to stop drunk driving. Unfortunately, drunk driving cannot be stopped. People will always commit this heinous crime. The numbers may go down, but unfortunately there will always be a number. The only way to continually decrease the amount of lives lost is to increase punishments for drunk driving.

If an accident occurs and the drunk driver hits someone, which is a high probability, both the drunk driver’s parents, his girlfriend’s parent, and the parents of the person who got hit will be affected. Drunk driving doesn’t only affect the driver but everyone else around that person. Another social structure that is affected by drunk driving is alcohol related crashes that costs money for the society. Every time a crash occurs because of alcohol, certain infrastructure may be damaged and the government takes that money from the society to repair them. Also, education at a young age about the negative effects of drunk driving cost money and teacher’s time to teach to their students.

Getting arrested and maybe being forced to sleep in a drunk tank is just some of the problems you also have to carry the humiliation and the shame of being caught and that person might just end up with their name written up in the local news paper. Alcohol can cause a major accident on the road that also affects other. Just by opening a can of beer can lead us or someone else to death. “Every 2-hours, three people are killed in alcohol-related highway crashes”(Chambers, 2010). One of my friends lost her mom about two years ago because a guy was driving under the influence of alcohol and was speeding where he lost control of the car and crashed into the car. Yes, the guy is still alive and the only one affected was my friend’s mom, she passed away on her way to Colorado to visit her family but sadly she never made

Driving drunk impairs you while you're driving and can impair your judgment to make decisions and judge things. Drunk driving doesn't just effect you. It can effect a lot of people in big ways such as losing a family member and changing some ones life as if you paralyzed them or something like that. I did not know that alcohol got into your blood stream and went into your brain in like 20 to 40 minutes. Also I did not know that you are impaired if the alcohol in your blood stream was 0.08. Those videos were super sad because they all lost loved ones or they were severely injured. I would feel terrible if I was drunk and hit someone. I couldn't forgive myself I don't think, so I'm not going to drink and drive or not even drink. Also you can
