Being able to drink and driving should not be choice. The ignorant people who choose to drink and drive are punished. Iowa arrested 16,642 people for DUI’s (driving under the influence) in 2015. Of those 16,642 people, 12,896 of them were convicted (MADD). Just as texting and driving should not be a choice. If someone picks up their handheld device, while driving the fine is $30 as of 2015. If a serious injury were to occur from texting and driving; the fine moves up to $1000 with possible license suspension for 90 days. If death is caused from the accident than the fine is $1,000 with a license suspension of 180 days (Iowa). Distractions arise with every activity that is done day to day. Both texting and drinking while driving is a major distraction that can put a life at risk. When intoxicated behind the wheel, someone will become incompetent to drive properly. There were 1,665 crashes and 937 crash injuries related to alcohol in Iowa during 2015. Iowa lost 93 lives due to drunk driving in 2015 (MADD). Your life or someone else's life can change dramatically while driving just because someone was on their phone. Texting and driving is a real issue in our country and outside of spreading awareness or creating ineffective distracted driving laws. no one has really tried to solve this problem. Texting and driving is a problem because too many innocent lives are lost every day. The Government should implement an app that rewards people for not being on their phone while driving because so many people die every day from texting and driving.
There are 3 types of distraction: visual, manual and cognitive. Visual means we should never taking our eyes off the road, manual stands for taking hands off the steering wheel, cognitive means taking mind off of driving. Some people do not know why using cell phone is more dangerous than drunk.
