Imagine a high school that is filled with reckless, hormone-crazed teenagers that have no restrictions on how they should dress. Their “Outfits of the Day” are more of a concern than what they learn in school. Their clothing choices becomes an interruption to their education. This is the mindset of teenagers of schools that do not have any dress code implementation. School should be a learning environment, not a fashion show. Students shouldn’t obsess over the clothes they wear. Dress codes are beneficial to schools because they help to prevent inappropriate clothing choices, provide less distractions, and they eliminate social and class barriers. Dress codes create less of a distraction to students. In 2010, the University of Houston found that elementary school girls' language test scores improved by about 3% after a dress code was set. With just a few small changes, results were already seen. This proves that dress codes are much more than just something enforced by bossy, controlling teachers. Students can focus on working on schoolwork. They won’t waste all their time thinking how they look or how others look. According to CDAPress.com, "[dress codes] provide for less distraction, less drama, and more of a focus on learning. It takes some embarrassing clothing situations out of the scene" (Hammons para. 7). Many teachers have reported their students having better grades as well. “Without the distraction of checking out what all the other students are wearing (or how much flesh they are showing), students find it easier to concentrate and do better in tests”(SacsJunior.com para. 8). Many students find it hard to fit in with the others. Having a dress code with a uniform policy will allow the kids to feel united. There would be less drama and pressure to fit in into situations that would be associated with appearance.Without a dress code, students would be preoccupied with the latest fashion or trends, they might even have low self esteem. Feelings of community among students can occur from the dress code. Many teenagers are actually able to identify with each other because of the equality towards the way they dress. Dress codes lift up school spirit. Students begin to hold a lot more pride in their school. They feel as if they belong somewhere. Dress codes make all students equal no matter what their background at home. This reduces the amount of bullying incidents as well. “Introducing uniform can reduce crime in schools, especially violence and theft. Headteachers at several US schools report lower levels of violence and crime after uniforms were introduced”(DebateWise.com para. 5). This is because students are not coming to school wearing expensive, designer clothes anymore. Kids may feel it hard to resist to take expensive items if they come from a low-income family. Some may argue that dress codes shame children and make them feel not special. Kids are brought together by dress codes. It is something they all share in common.
