Pros for using Drawings or Illustrations as Visual Aids 1. When giving a presentation or report that explains how something works it is beneficial to have a drawing or illustration of the item you are explain. Having an image of the item will help the reader to have a better understanding of how the item actually works. The use of drawings can give more detail than a photograph of what the speaker is presenting. (Boundless, 2016) 2. Drawings are used in clarifying instructions. Illustrations are used to point out the important parts of instructions using callouts or labels, which are letters or words connected by lines to the relevant part of the drawing. When high-quality illustrations that are large enough to see clearly and only show items …show more content…
A downside to using drawings would be that if they are not done correctly, the drawings can look sloppy, be ineffective, and appear unprofessional. (Boundless, 2016) 2. Small, poor quality drawings and illustrations can be hard to read. If the drawing is too small, it will likely be overlooked. Also when you use to many call-outs or labels they can be a distraction to your report. The use of poorly labeled drawings will also cause unnecessary confusion for the reader. (Illustrations in Formatting and Visual Aids, 2015) 3. Poorly chosen drawing and illustrations are a waste of white space. A general rule is to have 50% of your page be white space. (Pearsall, 2010) 4. A disadvantage to visual illustration would be that the illustrations may discourage a visual learner from actually reading the material and details. (What are the advantages and disadvantages of visual learning?, 2016) 5. When a visual aid is not properly designed for its intended use and audience, it can lead to a breakdown in the communication. So it is important to make sure your visual design is not going to distract the audience with the use of too many illustrations. (Eileen Rojas, 2016) It is important to know your audience and understand what will work best.
One final illustration that had a positive advantage was the symbol of the cow. This symbol is an extremely simple and non- extravagant drawing but I feel that it really stands for a lot. In the book it says that in 1868- 1869 Texas cattle were brought into the country. I believe that this symbol was an illustration of trade for the Native Americans. I think it marked the beginning of their trade because later on in the book there is a document of how the Indians go on to trade cattle for guns with other tribes. The image on page 48 really shows the trade use at its full potential by illustrating the trade within tribes. Trade is a very important in any civilization and is always an important advantage.
In many instances it is a good idea to use graphical representations to support the text in reports or business documents. Conduct research and find graphics or illustrations that might be used in documents providing information about the following:
Within the book the use of illustrations enrich and extend the story, therefore they are relevant to the story. The illustrations give the audience hints as to who the culprit is, and the reasons behind it. There are pages that contain just illustrations, this continues storytelling without use of words. It creates mood that is appropriate for the text, and the illustrations overall combine well with the storyline.
Scott McCloud’s graphic essay “Show & Tell” demonstrates how the relationship between pictures and words can be used to convey a message efficiently. By showing many visual examples of the different ways images and words can be used together, McCloud establishes that information is easier to interpret when paired with visual aid. By also pointing out that people are naturally inclined to show something visually as means of explaining, McCloud demonstrates his main point: the combination of words and images is very effective in conveying a message.
A slideshow or power point presentation can create a visual representation for teaching about similarities and differences between adjectives used to describe people. Or showing pictures of characters in a novel will help the students put an image to a written discretion that may not have been able to create with word only. This can also be used for other aspect within a novel like a setting, plot, themes, and symbols to meet the language objectives and the core content objectives.
A picture is worth a thousand words, and each piece of artwork has its own unique story to tell. The smallest change in style can lead to the picture setting a completely different tone, which is true whether the painting hangs in a museum or illustrates a children’s book. Illustrations in books draw the attention of younger readers. However, illustrations are not limited to the bright and lighthearted picture books such as the Dr. Seuss creations. Pictures in young adult novels enhance the meaning behind words, allowing the reader to have a better understanding of the story.
“People only see what they are prepared to see” is a famous quote by Ralph Waldo. This quote emphasises the fact that the purpose of a text can often be unnoticed and misinterpreted by the viewer. Many people only have a limited world experience, and it’s the Distinctly Visual feature of a text which allows the viewer to gain a better understanding. Distinctly Visual texts use a combination of techniques to create and shape an audience’s point of view or interpretation, and visualising a text requires the responder to interpret all of the images presented.
Visualizing data will help law enforcers communicate and receive a clearer picture. They will be able to target visual issues happening and make arrests quicker. Also, visual data will help law enforcers understand what is currently happening in the society and how it changed over time. For example, if a commander is explaining the crime rate of Mississippi and how it has changed over time compared to Tennessee, Washington, and Delaware; the law enforcers would not understand the comparison without the data shown a map. The data shown on a map makes the comparison clearer and easier to
In the story, the drawing enhances the comprehension of the wording of the story because it gives a visual representation of the events that happened during that time, and how they decided to solve it. At the beginning of the book, John Lewis and many others are marching. Then a group of white cops tells them they have to leave or they will use force. John Lewis and everyone said “No”. Then
Visual arguments agreeably have more information conveyed through them, opposed to standard written arguments. Interpretation of a visual argument is important for the person presenting the argument, because if the visual gives off an interpretation opposite what the person was trying to argue, they may have failed. I agree that visuals as striking as the one in "How Do Visual Arguments Work?" are frequently used to try to sway people's emotions in order to sway their agreement or disagreement of the topic. I also agree that visual arguments can be better understood by first breaking the visual down and then analyzing each part as an individual piece. While this method seems quite obvious, it also seems to be overlooked often, probably because
A just government is fair, balanced, and gives back to the citizens of the nation that give consent to be governed so that the nation may be secure. It is important to have a just government so that the nation can continue to evolve. The Constitution created a just government that provided more security than the Articles of Confederation had previously provided. The founders of the United States intended for all citizens to experience a just government through the Constitution. The Constitution established a balanced state and federal government, taxes that created federal revenue, and three branches of government that provided a just government for the United States.
Do you think graphic images can help portray a story? Graphic images help give a clearer picture of what is happening in a novel. Marjane Satrapi uses graphic images to represent the negative effect on social classes, gender role, and religion in Iran during the 1980’s. In Iran there is a major conflict over how the Islamic religion is being shown during the 1980’s, which leads to the Iranian Revolution.
The captivating painting by Vincent Van Gogh, The Starry Night is a work of art completed by Van Gogh in 1889. Van Gogh had wanted to paint something that represented the night sky for some time, but many people are interested to find out that Van Gogh actually painted The Starry Night during his time at Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, an asylum and clinic for the mentally ill. There is much debate over the legacy of Van Gogh, and his “Turbulent Mindstate” however we can examine much of the speculation about the artist by doing research on the painting The Starry Night. (Paulson)
I think graphic texts keep the reader more interested and informed while they’re reading. Graphic texts use visualization to get the point across. Written texts are sometimes hard to follow especially if it isn’t something that they’re passion it about. If people aren’t interested in what they’re reading they’re not actually interpreting the information. Written texts still give you all the information, just not as
Incivility is defined as, any type of disruptive classroom behavior that shows disrespect or a disregard for the instructor and fellow-students. There are many different uncivil actions that can take place in a college setting. Some being more serious than others, but ranking any type of behavior is subjective to the professor and the peers enrolled in that specific course. Teachers create a syllabus touching on classroom rules and behaviors that are expected throughout the semester. Technology, mostly cell phone and laptop use in the classroom-becoming commonplace, there is almost always a section dedicated to this topic.
