It is a great honor to extend my support of Dr. Deveny for the Arts & Sciences Faculty Mentor Award. Within the last two years I have had the privilege of having Dr. Deveny as a professor in Elementary Spanish II and Advanced Spanish Grammar, as well as a mentor in my life. He has shared not only his knowledge of the Spanish language, but also his time, energy, and compassion.
Dr. Deveny is a personable, wise, humble, and caring individual. He created a classroom environment that was enjoyable and challenging. Not once did I feel insufficient or discouraged in either of his courses. This is incredible considering my level of anxiety upon enrolling in my first college-level Spanish course, which was Elementary Spanish II. I distinctly recall approaching Dr. Deveny after the first day of class to introduce myself and to express my concern about being unsuccessful in learning Spanish. I have always been a perfectionist and loathe being bad at anything. Nevertheless, Dr. Deveny reassured me that success was absolutely attainable and that he would be available throughout the entire semester should I have questions or concerns.

Deveny, I decided to declare a minor in Spanish and applied for a study abroad program. I was awarded the Bailey Family Memorial Scholarship and studied abroad in Costa Rica for six weeks. This experience was a crucial step to developing confidence in Spanish and life, to gain independence, and to realize a burning passion to inquire more about the Spanish language and culture. Learning a second language, something that began as a doubtful consideration, became deeply engrained into my life aspirations. This year I will be helping out at the primary again, and I will also volunteer to be a translator for the parents. The only difference being that I will actually be more one-to-one with a 2nd grader, helping learn her English. I was overjoyed when I was offered this opportunity, I couldn’t wait to get started. I also couldn’t wait to get started with a new project I started at school. The step forward that I took was that I started my own program at my school, the unique factor being that it’s a spanish based after school study table. The goal of the program is to help out the students who are having trouble in class because they don’t know as much English.
I write to recommend with enthusiasm Jacob Gonzalez’s candidacy for admission to Yale Divinity School. During Jacob’s first year at Stanford University, the 2011-2012 academic year, he took all three quarters of the yearlong sequence of Spanish classes for home-background speakers that I teach.
Luis has been one of the best students in my 16 year career and possibly in the whole history of Irving High School. He is truly one of the finest examples of a well-rounded student that any teacher can ever encounter. As his AP Statistics and AP Calculus BC teacher, I been able to see multiple examples of Luis’s talents and abilities. Even up to this day, Luis does not stop surprising me with his diligence and persistence. Although I’m only his math teacher, I know that Luis has been a highly successful student throughout his high school career in a wide arrange of subjects. Thanks to my experience at your facility, I have firsthand noticed the importance of knowing Spanish for communication reasons. I have decided to pursue a certificate of Spanish for health professionals as well. Thanks to Sunbelt Apopka I came to this realization and more. Although I wish I could always come volunteer on a daily basis, I unfortunately I need to focus on some upcoming courses. Meaning you guys may see me again spontaneously, without warning. Perseverance led me to become a full-time honor student, mentor, Administrative Assistant, and caregiver. Using my analytical research skills, critical thinking, and the ability to speak two languages, I was able to obtain an internship at the Springfield Juvenile Court as a Victim Witness Advocate. At my internship, I developed skills in public speaking, time management, and interpreting. Being fluent in Spanish was a useful tool that I decided to contribute to my internship. Spanish speaking defendants and victims were beyond appreciative to have someone who spoke their language. They often expressed their sense of frustration caused by a language barrier. As I translated for Spanish speaking juvenile defendants, I saw a reflection of my younger self; however, we sat on opposite ends of the criminal justice system. As a scholarship boy, Rodriguez received many years of schooling and kept moving away from family as the time in education passed. This was what Rodriguez chosen before he actually realized his long for past. Once he admitted his nostalgia, he chose to physically leave academy and back home to stay with his family. But no sooner, he suspect his return and finally understand “If, because of my schooling, I had grown culturally separated from my parents, my education finally had given me ways of speaking and caring about that fact.” (Rodriguez, 532). At the end of his essay, he summarized his gain from his schooling, which is ‘Ways of speaking and caring’ himself or, in other word, discover the true behind reality. His discovery process of ‘ways of speaking and caring’ include his relationship with his family and teacher, experience of reading, and class shifted as he move from elementary school through college and graduate school to his career as a teacher and a writer.
Wearing my polka dot backpack, Hollister shirt and blue jeans, I opened the door and walked into the classroom. It was 2005 and the day of my first Spanish class. I sat down, class began and the teacher spoke only in Spanish the entire 50 minutes. It was a whirlwind experience, and I was hooked. That day marked the first step down a path that would develop a passion for language learning and international affairs. I chose this program because I believe that knowing Spanish will enable me to become a better person, a better global citizen, and a better teacher. In the past, I had the privilege of working, in my community, with ESL students whose families were unfamiliar with the American school system and recently with the daughter of one of my friends from Mexico. My friend, even after 20 years in the U.S., barely speaks English and because of that she can only work as a housekeeper. Her daughter is sixteen years of age, she never finished secondary school in Mexico and she does not speak English. Her mom decided to find her a job in the housekeeping industry and to not send her to school
On September 1, 2012 I moved to Virginia, United States. Many can say that, but to me it is one of the greatest things I have done in life. Being born in Puerto Rico, an island in which Spanish is the main language, the wish of learning English was constantly in my mind. As I grew up I started to take English courses in school; however, the courses were not as effective, since I only learned the basics of English. Later on after graduating from sixth grade I was enrolled in a bilingual private school. The fact that the school was mostly in English and that it was private challenged my learning even more than in a public school. Although the school was a great one, I was doing badly accademically. It wasn’t until the school year was over that I decided to move to the state of Virginia in order to begin with my journey. A journey in which I learned many things from life and because of this experience I am preapared to overcome anything that comes between me and what I want.
Although I have already been accepted into the Spanish 230 program in Granada, Spain, paying for the trip still remains as an obstacle for me. To give a brief overview, Spanish 230 is a six-week program composed of two semesters of coursework combined into six weeks of study. From a professional and academic standpoint, as a pre-med student, I’m acutely aware that knowing Spanish is absolutely critical in the medical field, especially since we are living in an increasingly diverse and globally-integrated society. Thus to establish a stronger relationship with patients, one that revolves around tolerance and understanding, an intensive knowledge of the Spanish culture and language is required. After Julia and her family got used to living in New York, getting accustomed to the type of buildings and their new environment in general became easier but being able to be seen through two different personas was much harder. Julia expressed this constant dilemma in knowing how to represent both her Dominican and now American side without losing “Julia”. Once a week Jose goes to the library and choose a bilingual book but he only reads the Spanish part which is not being beneficial for him. Jose says there is no need to read the part in English because anyways he does not understand a single word. Specialists are doing observations and exams to have a proper diagnostic for Jose. Every day he goes to another class for one hour where he sits in a computer and listens to a program design to help kids learn English. The counselor talks to Jose at least once a week to encourage him to grow academically. The principal wants to make sure that Jose is giving his hundred percent to learn. His friends are always trying to help him, Chaylem a very bright student read aloud to Jose so he can hear the pronunciation of the words and repeat them.
