To the A&S Faculty Mentor Award Committee,

It is a great honor to extend my support of Dr. Deveny for the Arts & Sciences Faculty Mentor Award. Within the last two years I have had the privilege of having Dr. Deveny as a professor in Elementary Spanish II and Advanced Spanish Grammar, as well as a mentor in my life. He has shared not only his knowledge of the Spanish language, but also his time, energy, and compassion.

Dr. Deveny is a personable, wise, humble, and caring individual. He created a classroom environment that was enjoyable and challenging. Not once did I feel insufficient or discouraged in either of his courses. This is incredible considering my level of anxiety upon enrolling in my first college-level Spanish course, which was Elementary Spanish II. I distinctly recall approaching Dr. Deveny after the first day of class to introduce myself and to express my concern about being unsuccessful in learning Spanish. I have always been a perfectionist and loathe being bad at anything. Nevertheless, Dr. Deveny reassured me that success was absolutely attainable and that he would be available throughout the entire semester should I have questions or concerns. …show more content…

Deveny, I decided to declare a minor in Spanish and applied for a study abroad program. I was awarded the Bailey Family Memorial Scholarship and studied abroad in Costa Rica for six weeks. This experience was a crucial step to developing confidence in Spanish and life, to gain independence, and to realize a burning passion to inquire more about the Spanish language and culture. Learning a second language, something that began as a doubtful consideration, became deeply engrained into my life aspirations.
