In this election year Donald Trump has emerged as the Republican nominee for president, and his policies bear an unlikely resemblance to an earlier Republican nominee, Richard Nixon. Trump and Nixon may seem unlikely on the surface; their foreign and domestic policies, however, share great similarities. Donald Trump and Richard Nixon, despite their differing personalities, share resemblances in both their standing as the “law and order” candidate and their “secret plan” to defeat the insurrection forces of the world. Nixon’s introverted personality caused problems for him and eventually led to his downfall. Nixon, a well-known brooder, recorded every conversation that took place inside the Oval office in fear of a conspiracy. Although practiced by Kennedy and Johnson before him, this caused him problems when he confessed to knowledge of the Watergate break-ins on these tapes. His paranoia leading to the Watergate scandal most likely stemmed from his humiliating defeat …show more content…
In 1983 Trump bought into the newly-formed United States Football League (USFL) as the owner of the New Jersey Generals. After signing a number of high-profile players, the Generals quickly became one of the most successful franchises in the USFL. A few years later, however, Trump got cocky and convinced the other USFL owners to sue the NFL over their “monopoly on football.” The USFL eventually won the case but the court only awarded the one dollar saying they had not suffered due to the NFL’s monopoly. With their funds drained from the court case, the USFL collapsed. Trump and his ego had single-handedly ran the USFL into the ground. Trump also speaks his mind more than he should, repeatedly making lewd comments toward women, minorities, and other candidates’ families. Although Trump and Nixon’s personalities differ, their domestic policy bear a certain resemblance to each
Richard Nixon’s involvement in the Watergate scandal left no doubt to his involvement of being impeached. During the Nixon Administration, he was able to prevent colleges from being gender biased and allowing both male and female to have equal opportunity and receiving financial aid as well as competing in sports. He was able to establish the Environmental Protection Agency. He also worked to create a relationship between the U.S and the Middle East. Unfortunately, even with all of the accomplishments, he was able to have, everyone will remember Richard Nixon as the president who was involved in the Watergate scandal. The Watergate scandal left an asterisk by his legacy while being in the office, the results left him with having to resign and with him facing criminal charges as well, the Scandal became well known to the public in the summer of 1974. Through my essay, I will discuss why I am intrigued by the Watergate scandal, and discuss what if Richard Nixon never got caught on the audio tape?
Throughout history, political leaders of the United States were, at one time, thought of as vital pioneers of our progressive society. As president, they vow to take the responsibility to represent America and its people with integrity. Unfortunately, over the years, our trust in our executive legislatures has radically deteriorated. This shift within public and governmental assurance has echoed all throughout history, but peaks at the height of an unexpected scandal. The 1970’s began on a path of disparity and hesitation due to the radical events and assassinations that shaped America’s mentality in the 1960’s. In a nation divided, Richard M. Nixon stepped in as 37th president in 1969 with a mission to resolve the trailing aftermath of the
During Nixon’s 1972 campaign for his second term, his administration was alleged to be a part of the infamous “Watergate scandal” (Richard M. Nixon, 2011). On the night of June 17, 1972, five men entered the Democratic National Committee offices inside the Watergate office complex in Washington D.C. A night guard found the men in the offices and had them arrested at 2:30 am. After investigators began their interrogations of the men, they saw these men belonged to the Committee to Re-Elect President Nixon (The History Place, 2000). When investigators found this information about these men, red flags went up and the investigation turned to President Nixon. The reason for why these men were sent to Watergate is because in 1970, The New York Times revealed a secret bombing campaign against Cambodia was being directed as part of the American war effort in Vietnam. When Nixon heard of this, he ordered wiretaps of reporters and government employees to discover source of the news leaks (Ibid.). This decision made by Nixon cost his presidency.
Nixon's extreme secrecy led him to be withdrawn from the rest of the country. He
In this article the debate of whether Richard Nixon should be forgiven was discussed. While Nixon was known to have reorganized the executive branch in a helping sense, his one track mind that extended the Vietnam War and the truth about who he really was through the Haldeman Diaries only goes to show that Nixon's poor leadership should indefinately not be forgiven.
He resigned because of his upcoming impeachment and he didn’t want the severity of his crimes to be known to the public. The outstanding crime that put Nixon in a bad place was the Watergate Scandal which was said to be the biggest abuse of Presidential power in history. Nixon had people to break into the Democratic National Committee HQ and electronic bug the building in June 1972. Although it is said that Nixon didn’t order the burglary, he did everything in his power to cover it up including lying about it for months on end. Richard Nixon also prolonged the Vietnamese war by promising the South Vietnamese certain concessions if they would hold off on negotiating peace until Nixon was put in office.
President Richard Nixon did several things while in office that eventually led to his resignation in 1974. The most significant is that he plotted to wiretap and steal from different offices and other spaces to gather information to help lead to re-election and he also tried to cover up and lie about the scandal when it all unfolded. 1) “Nixon created a special investigative unit known as the “plumbers” to gather information…” (Foner, GML, 1031). These “plumbers” were all former employees for the CIA, which later led the FBI to believe that the break-ins where operated by the CIA. When the scandal broke, the uncovered White House tapes also led to his resignation. 2) He was heard saying on the Smoking Gun tape, “Yeah, when I saw that news summary
Former President Richard Nixon is most well-known for his role in the Watergate crisis in the early 1970’s. The Watergate crisis started in June of 1972, when the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters was broke into by members of Nixon’s re-election committee. The press took this breaking news and began to dig deeper into what the Whitehouse (President Nixon) was hiding. Over the next two years heavy investigations into the Watergate incident revealed that President Nixon did, in fact, ordered a cover-up to keep the incident under control. Fearing impeachment, President Nixon resigned his presidency in August 1974,
Forty- four Presidents have helped our great country to become a nation to freely live in. George Washington known as “The Father Of Our Country led the way for us to be free and Abraham Lincoln helped all people to live freely and work each day. Barack H. Obama (Democratic) also known as Barry, our 44th president and George W. Bush (Republican), our 43rd president are the main two presidents that stood out the most. Both ex-presidents differ from each other but also share similarities. Weather a Republican or Democratic supporter, these two main political parties show philosophical differences through their viewpoints on major topics such as economic policies, foreign policies, or dealing with terrorism.
Richard Nixon was the 37th president of the United States of America, who accomplished countless good deeds to the country he was leading. Despite his best efforts Richard Nixon would not be remembered for these good deeds, he would be remembered for the only incident where he fell short of being one of the best leaders of the United States, Watergate. Watergate.info defines Watergate as, “The Watergate scandal was a major political scandal that occurred in the United States in the 1970s as a result of the June 17, 1972, break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C., and the Nixon administration's attempted cover-up of its involvement (1).” Nixon may have made a mistake, but humans are imperfect creatures living in an imperfect world. How can one expect even the best of people to live a life without a mistake? Had the Democratic side
Throughout Nixon’s campaign, his promise to the American people focused on law and order as he often spoke to the forgotten and silent (Richard Nixon 2014). Furthermore, he catered to this group in his domestic policy by attacking liberal programs and successfully passed significant and progressive social legislation such as welfare reform, strict environmental laws and consumer protection legislation (Richard Nixon 2014). The focus of Nixon’s agenda was to attack liberal ideology by confronting liberalism within the Supreme Court and concentrating on nominating conservative justices (Richard Nixon 2014). Where President Johnson’s desire was to win the approval of the American people by bringing them together, Nixon pursued to accomplish conservative control through division. However, both Johnson and Nixon encountered the developing social unrest which was deepened by the Vietnam War due to their presidential boldness (Pfiffner 2011, 13). President Johnson deceived the American people which worked to intensify the war as he did not want to endanger his Great Society Program (Pfiffner 2011, 13). President Nixon’s continuous pursuit of the war and opposition to the congressional efforts at ending the war led to his challenging
Nixon was skeptical when presented with the reports of the burglary. There was evidence on tape that he had not known about the affair previously and that was good enough for
I also think that Donald Trump is being selfish here. If someone is running for something big such as the president, you want people on their good side for you. Meaning good impressions. I think that Donald Trump has an unlikely chance of being president because of his rude remarks to other people such as Hillary Clinton. If Donald Trump changes at what he's doing right now, people might vote for him. I'm pretty sure that other presidents when it was their reign, people said rude things about them but, they handled it responsibility. At this rate if Donald Trump was president people would say rude things and Donald Trump would do the same thing back to people. Other people from other countries might see it to us being arrogant just because
President Richard M. Nixon’s administration had to face many international and domestic challenges in the United States between 1968 and 1974, some positive and some negative. His achievements in expanding peaceful relationships with both China and the Soviet Union are contrastingly different with his continuation of the Vietnam War. In the end, Nixon’s scandals and abuse of presidential power caught up to him, and his administration did much to corrode America’s faith in the government.
Children plug-in their headphones as they auscultate to their parents exasperatedly bemoan about the 2016 presidential elections. Unfortunately, adults have reason to complain about voting this year. Both candidates, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are equally displeasing creating a stressful combination. Due to the gruesome selection of candidates, many people are in panic and vow to withdraw themselves from the country. When society began to perceive the fact that Hillary or Trump would become president, a switch began to triggerer within the minds of Americans. Some residents of the US were in such deep distraught that they vowed to leave the country. Actress Raven Symone confessed, “For this election if any republican gets nominated,
