As the season moves on, he takes over as the driver and continues to win races and gain sponsors. Ricky puts the team and the fans on his back and carries them to victory. Ricky is a hero for everyone; they look up to him. He proves that he is the best driver at the time by winning. Ricky is a hero because he is courageous and changes the course of his team by winning.

There are many heroes, but there are those who sit back and question what or who makes a hero in today’s society. It has never been a set standard for heroes. Pat Tillman was born on November 6, 1976 in Fremont, California. He went to Leland High School and played for their football. After he graduated high school, Tillman went to Arizona State University for college and played for their football team as well. Soon after he graduated, he got drafted into the NFL, playing for the Arizona Cardinals. In 2002 Tillman enlisted himself into the United States army to help fight after the 9/11 attacks. But he sadly passed away because of friendly fire on April 22, 2004. Pat Tillman was a man with many amazing qualities: determination, loyalty, and humble/selfless.

Heroes are leaders who are brave, strong-willed, and bold. Ordinary people can be heroes if they have the perseverance to extraordinary actions. Heroes are people who put others’ needs before their own. These individuals sacrifice themselves for others. They rise up from rock bottom to do ground-breaking actions that no one believed that they could. To many, Joe Rantz is considered a true hero for never giving up when others gave up on him.

In America, we often idolize our sports stars. However, we do not always idolize them for the right reasons. Throughout many of our childhoods and even adult lives, we see athletes as heroes, but are they just good athletes or do they have characteristics that make them truly heroic? Heroism can be based off something of a personality trait, or something that makes a person the naturally whole type of person they are. The word ‘hero’ can have many different types of meanings and connotations that can come with it but the best definition to fit the legacy of the late Kurt Caselli is as follows: “A man who is idealized for possessing superior qualities in any field” which defines Caselli in all ways and directions; backwards, forwards, sideways, and upside down (dictionary.com). Kurt Caselli was one that hung his head high no matter what the circumstances and always emerged on top, and in the process was affecting the lives of thousands of young and old followers alike with inspiration to be the best and “be remembered as a person, not a racer” (personal quote from Kurt Caselli). Caselli should be considered a hero because of his determination to perform, appeal to crowds, and just be an all-around good friend to lend out a helping hand when needed. He has touched the hearts and souls of many, even though still believed he was a little guy, just like every other ‘average joe,’ but for those he left behind, whether on the trail or in life, he left an effect that would never be lost.

One example of unexpected heroism, is from three greasers, Dallas Winston, Johnny Cade, and Ponyboy Curtis from The Outsiders.
