Dominican Republic was formally known as the island of “Hispaniola” named by Christopher Columbus. The mountainous country currently shares itself with Haiti. On February 27th, 1844, Dominican Republic gained independence from war against Haiti. Although the country has faced many hardships from the incoming decades, the country has survived.

The country is located between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, and east of Haiti. The capital city of Santo Domingo is located along the southern coast of the country. The economy of Dominican Republic has risen 7.4% since 2016. The economy of the Dominican Republic is based off agriculture, with sugar, coffee and tobacco. Unemployment rates went up to 26% and inflation reached 37.5% after 2 hurricanes hit the island in 1979 but the country recovered. Tourism remains important industries and helps build the country.

A major domestic issue that face the country is education. According to a recent study in the country only 1.3 billion dollars is spent on education which is only 2.4 percent. In other countries they spend more than 5 percent. Protesting the funding by the government has sparked controversy. On every fourth day of the month at 4 pm supporters of the protest are asked to war yellow and standout outside of various point of the country and listen to assemblies. Protesters may even walk to the National Palace to further protest their reason.
