Cultures are so diverse throughout the modern world. For many people, the only culture they are around is the one that they grew up in. Despite a personal unawareness of differing cultures, there are other cultures around the world, which are just as foreign to the American culture as americans are to their culture. With that in mind, it is important to try to learn about and understand other cultures that may differ from the culture a person has grown up knowing. This is especially crucial to people who are planning on traveling to an area where the culture could be different. Even if a person knows they could come into contact with people from another culture, they should do their best to learn about that culture to better understand a person’s background and the culture that has helped shape them into the way that they are currently.
The Dominican Republic is one of two nations that inhabit the island of Hispaniola. The other country which they share the island with is the nation of Haiti, which the Dominican Republic gained independence from on February 27, 1844. Hispaniola was originally “named La Isla Española, ‘The Spanish Island,’” by Christopher Columbus when he first landed there on December 5, 1492 (Hispaniola).

A representative democracy is a system which elected officials are representing a group of people, unlike a direct democracy where the people directly vote to to decide on policy. This form of government is a similar set up to the American system, but there are differences between the two. In their government they have a bicameral national congress, a senate, the chamber of deputies, a cabinet, and a president. The current president of the Dominican Republic is Danilo Medina who first took office in 2012 and is currently serving his second term as president. Much like the United States of America, presidents serve four year terms with a maximum of two servable
The chapter continued to discuss how people experience other cultures when they are removed from their area to a different place. This occurs in the form of culture shock people experience new traditions that are unfamiliar to them when the come to a place that is home to another culture. Human development may also include joining the ideas of various cultures and forming it into a new concept. It puts heavy emphasis on learning other cultures in an unbiased form in order to compare and make observations. This chapter also studies of culture have been able to advance over time and how change is an essential aspect of
In America today, there is a large and diverse African-American population. Within this population, there are several ethnic groups. The other ethnic group similar to Afro-Americans is Dominicans. Not only are they both minorities, but they also look similar as well. Both Dominicans and Afro-Americans are originally from Africa, but their slave masters separated them into two different cultures. African-Americans was African slaves of Americans, and Dominicans were African slaves of the Spanish. Hevesi of the New York Times says, "Dominican and Afro-Americans culture was formed from one ethnicity, Africans" (Hevesi 86). As a person of these two ethnic groups, I have two perceptions of my dual ethnicity. Among Afro-Americans’ and
1.To improve my understanding of different cultures I could study them on the Internet or in person through experience such as travel and I can also engage in events and local groups that celebrate different cultures such as multicultural gatherings and festivals.
Culture is not a fixed phenomenon, nor is it the same in all places or to all people. It is relative to time, place, and particular people. Learning about other people can help us to understand ourselves and to be better world citizens.
The Dominican Republic or also known as La Republica Dominicana is a small island that is 18,816 square miles, located off the coast of Florida. The Dominicans of this land share their island with the Haitians. The island has a subtropical climate, mountains, rolling hills, and fertile river valleys. The economy is mainly dominated by sugar, which still earns much of the country's foreign exchange despite establishment of varied light industries and the development of nickel, mining and tourism. Coffee, cocoa, tobacco, and bananas are also a major export crop. But, despite their seemingly stable economy, and lush landscaping, a vast majority of the estimated 8,603,200 people that live there wish to migrate to the
The history of the Dominican Republic is something that is not usually talked about. Now, the city is buzzing with tourists and resorts, but what most people who visit the Dominican Republic don't know is the Era of Trujillo. The Dominican Republic has changed for the better and overcame the corruption of the former tyrant, Trujillo. The Dominican Republic is part of an island in the Caribbean called Hispaniola. The country occupies two-thirds of the island, while Haiti occupies the rest one-third.
Culture is the thoughts, communications, actions, beliefs, values, and institutions racial, ethnic, religious, or social groups (Jarvis, 2012, p 14). Every culture has its own view/ understanding about health care, health and illnesses. Although what might be seen as acceptable in one culture, may not be acceptable in another, regardless of where you are health care and culture will always exist. My definition of culture is the way someone lives his or her life in a daily basis; which includes things like the language one speaks in and out of the home, food one eats, music one listens to, and one religious practice. The culture I will be
Latino Americans are facing issues with their identity because of their ethnic and racial backgrounds due to our education institutions in America. These issues result in a separation of their American and Latino culture creating two different identities but not enough of American or Latino identity to fully feel part of either culture.
It is centered with a white cross that extends to the edges and divides the flag into four rectangles. The color blue is for liberty, red for the blood of heroes, and white for salvation. His flag is the only flag with a bible on it. This Island is a strong Island and when it is in trouble all of its people stand together as one. There are some really cool facts about this flag. The Dominican Republic coat of arms features a shield in quartered colors of the flag, with a laurel branch to the left and a palm frond to the right. The blue ribbon above the shield displays the national motto: Dios, Patria, Libertad (God, Fatherland, Liberty). Below the shield, the words República Dominicana appear on a red ribbon. In the center of the shield, surrounded by six spears, is a Bible with a small golden cross above it. Popular belief claims that the pages are opened to the Gospel of John 8:32, which reads, "Y la verdad os hará libre." (And the truth shall make you free.) This is something interesting about the flag that you would have never thought of from the top of your head. The national anthem explains a little bit of the history from the
As Mahatma Gandhi said, “No culture can live, if it attempts to be exclusive” (Mahatma). Our culture identifies who we are and how we behave in social environments and provides us with a foundation in which to live our lives and raise our families. Each individual culture has certain customs and courtesies that are important. Exposure to the cultures of others can be intimidating and can leave a person feeling confused and unsure about how they fit in (Schaefer 60). Culture shock can leave a person feeling out of place in an unfamiliar culture (Schaefer 60). Our diverse societies demand understanding and acceptance of other cultures. Learning and understanding these cultures before being
Mexican Culture Vs. American Culture Every country has a different way of living. Each country is known for its language, music, food, celebrations and more. Each of these things defines the culture of each country, and the differences are what makes it unique.
In our society today, culture is not what it used to be hundreds of years ago. There is no more “pure” culture. Our culture today is enriched with many different traditions and customs that are being shared and adopted. Due to emigration and immigration, a variety of diverse customs, beliefs, and knowledge moved with every exiting and entering human being. Thus, changing and shaping the culture of many. Throughout the world, the beliefs and religious views of culture are dissimilar around the world. By taking the time to read, listen and learn about certain people’s culture, there will be knowledge and understanding that will be gained.
Studying the histories of cultures that are different from ours gives us a frame of reference that can lead to better intercultural communication. It is not only important to study the histories of other countries’ cultures but our own American subcultures as well. We need to understand
The first dimension I will discuss is that of power distance. The United States has a fairly low score of 40, whereas Spain is 57 and France is 68. This shows that both European countries are more accepting of the hierarchal structure of their culture. France has a very structured class system, with strong competition between each layer. The French are also raised as children to rely on their parents, and this relationship further transfers into their adolescence, as they continue to rely on other leadership roles such as teachers for guidance.
Learning about a new culture is very common now days. Most people immigrate to other countries looking for different goals in life. Some people immigrate for safety purposes; some people are looking for better opportunities and different quality of life. For some people adjust themselves to a new culture is easy; the younger they are the easiest is to adjust to a new different culture and a different way to live. However, there are many people who struggle every day trying to learn about a different culture.
