Jane has gotten used to cruelty and biased behavior towards her average looks, and develops a miserable self-esteem that believes the only possible way to describe her exterior is “plain”. This self-esteem prevents her from even beginning to recognize that anyone could appreciate her or find her beautiful in any manner. The society’s typical reactions and judgments shaped Jane’s self-esteem, and prevented her from receiving equal treatment as that of a beautiful woman.

In Life in the Iron Mills, Rebecca Harding Davis tells the story of Hugh Wolfe, a lower-class man whose love of beauty and desire to move up in the world ultimately leads to his mental decline and demise. Wolfe lives in a town of smothering grey smog and works in an iron mill reminiscent of Hell, places that induce hopelessness and despair by appearance. In contrast to his surroundings, Wolfe possesses a fierce love of beauty and a talent of sculpting with korl, both of which are frequently associated with higher socioeconomic classes. Initially, it appears that Davis means to reinforce the common associations of beauty with the upper class and unseemliness with the lower class. In the story, beauty can be associated with the upper class characters through their polished appearances and admiration of art, inciting a positive association in response to beautiful imagery; unseemliness, on the other hand, can be associated with the lower class and negative feelings because the mill is reminiscent of hell and the characters are generally unattractive. However, when looked at with a closer lens, it appears the story cannot be taken at face value and the typical feelings surrounding beauty and ugliness do not apply in the story. In the second part of her book, Scarry begins by refuting two arguments against beauty. The first one being that beauty distracts us from social injustices (she calls this ‘lateral disregard’). The second states that beauty is destroyed by our own 'reification' of it. Scarry ultimately concludes that both arguments contradict one another by nature. Throughout other parts of her book, Scarry is immensely generous with supportive examples heavily rooted in literature and the arts in order to strengthen her claims.

The persona also faces challenging situations, where the persona confronts the stereotype of beauty in modern society.

There is an old saying that declares: “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. This suggests that beauty is subjective, and lacks a concrete contextualized definition; what is perceived by one individual as attractive, may be, by another, considered unattractive. Regardless of the subjective nature of beauty, society still conforms to beauty ideals, which are propagated and fueled by the media. The beauty ideals that are self imposed by society are problematic because they are unattainable, and galvanize society to reject or promote people based on their outward appearance and hold people’s inner beauty in less regard. The imbalance between physical (outward) appearance and inward is a key theme in both The Picture of Dorian Gray, and The Phantom of the Opera. In both novels, the main characters are subject to judgment that is overwhelmingly directed at their outward appearance, and we see an over-emphasis of the superficial, which ultimately leads to their downfall. Another important thematic element present in both novels is that the main characters have conflicting dual personalities that have changing roles as the story progresses. A contrasting thematic element in both books is the excessive praise that the main character in The Picture of Dorian Gray received, and the excessive criticism that the main character in The Phantom of the Opera received, both leading to negative outcomes, and the characters’ ultimate demise.

Beauty’s innate commentary to Society Concepts of beauty can be portrayed in everyday life. Jane Martin’s play entitled Beauty is the perfect example of how society perceives beauty and the subsequent benefits of possessing these unrealistic attributes. ‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder’, this is a phrase that many may relate to and Jane’s play is a representation of this, making it a commentary to society’s unrealistic views of beauty. An in depth look, at how society’s perceptions of beauty affects not only those who measure themselves up to these standards but also those who fit into the mold themselves and this will be the aim of this essay.

In Lucy Grealy’s narrative Mirror, Lucy tells us a distraught story which makes everyone know about how body images ruin one’s life. In her childhood, Lucy experienced a painful surgery that cut half of her jaw, leaving her struggling to fix her face for the rest of her life. In addition to physical sufferings, she also tolerated the unfriendly and vicious sights and languages from strangers, catching her in endlessly depressed emotions. In fact, body images do mean a lot, because most people in the world focus on their faces and worship beauty. However, perfectness doesn’t exist, and no matter how much effort and money we spend on dressing, we can always find the flaws on our faces and shapes. Physical appearance can make us feel happy, but it also creates upset and troublesome feelings. In order to not let the body images dominate our minds, we have to accept the truth that we are all imperfect and learn to focus on the strength we have. Only when we accept the flaws, can we find the beauty of ourselves.

The development has created much controversy because how it decides to present its perception. Humanity is at fault for how the beauty industry decides how to advertise the perfect image. Yet, in the twenty-first century, there has been a turn of events. Those have educated imaginations are realizing how one standard of beauty is not enough for the millions of versions of beauty there are. Despite, wanting to have no standards of beauty, the educated know that this is no physically possible. Frye perfectly summarizes, “ The fundamental job of the imagination in ordinary life, then, is to produce, out of the society we have to live in, a vision of the society we want to live in. Obviously, that can’t be a separated society, so we have to understand how to relate the two.” (86) The educated imagination interprets how they want their society without losing the connection to what we live in. The beauty industry represents the society we live in: superficial, materialistic, and self-indulgent. The educated imagination represents the ideal society: accepting of all and self-confidence. Although it cannot be the ideal society, there are still possibilities of a society where beauty is not a forced by people sitting at a board table. The mixture of these two societies can develop into a society where beauty is not only external but internal. Having the educated teach the weak imaginations how to comprehend the repercussions of the beauty industry, but still, understand it is difficult to change a hundred-year-old tradition. Does being outwardly beautiful make us feel more confident in ourselves? How often do we bring ourselves down because we don’t feel beautiful, but what is beauty? Alice Walker addresses the topic of not accepting and embracing oneself because of outward appearance. In Alice Walker’s narrative, “Beauty: When the Other Dancer is the Self,” she describes her story of feeling beautiful to completely ugly and then beautiful again. Her story gives the reader a better understanding of what true beauty is. Narrative rhetorical pattern, pathos, and rhetorical questions help Alice Walker teach her audience about beauty.

Spoken wisely by Plato, ¨Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder¨ (Goodreads). In Alice Walker's short story ¨Beauty: When the Other Dancer is the Self,¨ the reader follows a young girl as she struggles to find the meaning of true beauty. As a child, she was always extremely full of herself, begging for attention and, most times, achieving her position in the spotlight. However, when she turns eight, an incident occurs that leaves her questioning if she'll ever be beautiful again. Much like this young girl, I experienced a similar situation that had me questioning my own worth in a world of beautifully powerful people. What such a self-analyzing question can bring to light is the controversy over whether beauty is in relation to appearance or in relation to a person as a whole.

Although, the procedure was effective and adequate results were obtained, there are some improvements that can be added towards the experiment to make it exceptional. Since this lab required both time and precision, if more time were given, then the lab would have definitely been done correctly. Also, more material/ equipment was needed to properly carry out the experiment since, the probe that was used kept on failing during trials and there were only limited supplies of them around the classroom. Moreover, the clamp that was used to hold the flask did not provide a secure environment in order to measure the amount of carbon dioxide produced because the stopper could not stay in place.
