Domestic violence is an ongoing epidemic affecting people around the world. Over the years, the problem of domestic violence has raised an abundance of questions: how serious is the issue, and what actions could be implemented to prevent it? In the article “Domestic Violence Has Been a Problem Throughout U.S. History”, it explains how the issue of domestic violence has been going on for decades; however, did not get address until recent years. Having a clear understanding of policing domestic violence is essential. Many people always wonder what steps are necessary for preventing domestic violence and making it less tolerant to society. Throughout my entire undergraduate educational experience I have focused primarily on why domestic violence occurs and how it affects the individuals in those particular households. With this research, I am more interested in what researchers believe police should do that would lead to more effective control over domestic violence.

Domestic violence is at an all time high in South Carolina, with the incidence of homicide by domestic partner twice that of the national average (Safe Horizon, 2015). While there is not currently an objective that specifically addresses domestic violence, Healthy People 2020 recognizes that there needs to be a better understanding of this trend. Efforts to prevent domestic violence may focus on changing social norms about the acceptance of violence and education on bullying, dating violence, and sexual violence among youth, as well as learning effective conflict resolutions and coping skills. In this paper I will be addressing the correlation that is between substance abuse and domestic violence. Early on in the course we learned that domestic violence does not only pertain to intimate partner violence but also to child abuse, elder abuse, and any other abuse of a person that occurs with inside the home. I will be providing research from scholarly journals that support the findings that substance abuse is related to domestic violence on all levels (intimate partner violence, child abuse, and elderly abuse).

The relationship between alcohol or other substance abuse and domestic violence is very complicated. A prevailing myth about domestic violence is that alcohol and drugs are the major causes of domestic abuse. In reality, some abusers rely on substance use (and abuse) as an excuse for becoming violent. Alcohol allows the abuser to justify their abusive behavior as a result of the alcohol. While an abuser’s use of alcohol may have an effect on the severity of the abuse or the ease with which the abuser can justify their actions, an abuser does not become violent “because” drinking causes them to lose control of his/her temper. Many statistics show that the batterers have the tendency to use Methamphetamine and Crack cocaine as their drug of choice. When taking these drugs it is proven that they can cause the batterer to be alert, paranoia and a variety of other unpredictable and adverse reactions. They can also cause people to become irrational, excited, agitated and become unable to control anger or violent impulses within seconds. Many cases that have been reported to the police have shown that the abuser has had some type of drug and alcohol in their system during their dispute. Research has it that the female group is the one that becomes victimized the most and there are several strategies that have been put into place to culminate this issue of violence at home, more especially against women.

Domestic Violence is a critical issue negatively impacting women in the world today. There has to be something done to prevent this type of abuse from happening. The results of my research revealed that there are many victims that do not know the type of help that is available and there needs to be major improvement in the way domestic violence cases are handled. Based on my findings, awareness and prevention programs should be implemented in every state in order prevent this type of abuse from happening over and over. Also, each program must be monitored to ensure they are following the proper guidelines in order to better serve the victims and their families.

Substance abuse and domestic violence are closely interlinked on various grounds both in people 's mind and scientifically. It is a common belief that substance abuse plays a significant role in the escalating numbers of domestic violence in the current society. Different studies conducted have shown that there is a correlation between substance abuse and the current emerging domestic violence issues. High rates of substance abuse by various individuals have resulted in the increased levels of domestic violence. This is a more clear indication that substance abuse and domestic violence are interrelated actions which should be addressed together. Therefore this research paper will aim at creating an understanding of drug addiction and domestic violence levels.
