Professional sports have been in the news for domestic violence for a really long time. Some that may come to your mind could be Ray Rice, Warren Moon, Greg Hardy, and Jose Reyes. Yes, three of these four players are in the National Football League (NFL), but that does not mean that only football players are the ones who have been doing this. The most recent one is Jose Reyes who plays in Major League Baseball (MLB). That is really ones opinion, but some don’t have anything but I slap on the wrist. Commissioners around these leagues usually suspend the player for a couple games until all of the details and videos come out. Ray Rice was suspended two games until they saw evidence then he was suspended for the whole year. Some wanted him banned …show more content…
This is something one has to ask themselves when you are talking about domestic violence in sports. I have done a lot of research on this topic now and I believe that they should have a standard punishment for domestic violence. Instead of one guy getting a two game suspension and another guy getting four game suspension they need to come to and agreement and decide how many games it will be for everyone. Now, yes you do have different sports and not all sports are the same length, a baseball season is 162 games a year, a football season is 16 games a year, and a basketball season is 83 games a year. Each sport I believe should have its own suspension but they have to have it the same for every guy in their sport. I think that in baseball you should get suspended for 75 games on your first offense and from then on it should increase. In football I believe you should get suspended for six games for your first offense. In basketball they should get suspended 40 games for a first offense. The reason I say first offense is because if a guy gets suspended for that many games he hurts the team and if it happens more than once than an organization probably will not want to sign you. I think that the NFL has not handled the situation correctly. Ray Rice has still yet to find another job since his incident has occurred, while Greg Hardy served his four game suspension and he is still playing for the Dallas Cowboys right now. The only reason Rice has yet to find another job is because he served his two game suspension and then videos were released and he was suspended for the whole year and his team released him. Yes, I believe that professional sports need to have a harsher punishment, but they need to have a standard of games that you are going to suspend a
When you display domestic violence in the public eye you not only damage your image, but the image of the NFL. It is embarrassing to the league when a team player is not acting professional at all times. They are always representing their team, even off the field. He also should be a role model to the younger kids who may look up to him. He was not punished enough for his
Ray Rice has abused his his wife those are both very dreadful and the NFL doesn't approve it. Once the NFL heard about him whipping his son with a small stick than I think they let him off with a warning. Abuse is bad in many ways no matter who you're abusing. Ray Rice has done something a fan of Ray Rice would never of thought of him doing. Every fan of Ray Rice is now sad that he has been kicked out of the NFL and his contract is demolished out of every file they have it in.
Over the past few months, our TV screens and newspapers have been flooded with stories of domestic violence in the world of sports. Most of these domestic violence cases have come from the National Football League's athletes. Over the past couple of months, the NFL has been under fire by its fans in response to domestic violence cases involving stars in the National Football League like Adrian Peterson, Ray Rice, Greg Hardy, and Jonathan Dwyer. Could these assaults all be connected to constant blows to the head? Have they experienced concussion like symptoms without even noticing? This could be entirely true hence three of the names above are running backs and endure the most punishment. All of these cases were brought to public news all within
Personal conduct in the NFL, National Football League, is an issue that is starting to spiral out of control. Late September, 2014, “the league [had] suspended at least 20 players for actions including assault, substance abuse and use of performance-enhancing drugs” (White); this was only a few weeks into the regular season of play for the league. The NFL has grown enormously since it was founded on August 20, 1920 in Canton, Ohio. But, this league has become more and more lenient with its players and personnel. Many professional athletes in the NFL receive special treatment regardless of their improper actions, thus allowing them to elude the consequences and in turn setting a misleading example for their young fans. In order
For years on end the Nfl has paid no mind or just paid off the crimes that have been committed to save the face of the Nfl. As years progressed so did the crimes and also in the last few years up to early 2014 Jane McManus explains how Sarah Friel cracks down on these such crimes with the help of Nfl commissioner Roger Goodell. Roger Goodell is the Nfl commissioner whom is a very stern and wise older gentleman for years on end he has been talking to the victims and their families for hours on end. This summer, Goodell pinpointed the Super Bowl as a time to re-evaluate the NFL's domestic violence efforts. Based on interviews with more than 15 people inside and outside league
Regarding the Dewan Smith-Williams case they’re goal to me is to protect the brand and not to protect the husband from himself and his high risk behavior to his wife and family because they didn’t want her to go to the police and keep it silent. I think Mrs. Williams made the right call to come forth and let it be known that spouses and/or partners are being treated unfair and something needs to be done. In my opinion, maybe if fans, anti-violence groups and women’s rights organizations get together and organize a plan that could force the owners to enact stronger and lasting reforms to improve the NFL actions and response to domestic abuse. They should make some amendments to the personal conduct policy. This topic relates to the discussion on human behavior because we want to know what causes the domestic abuse from the spouse especially if the abuser is in the NFL, a super star, and fame is growing and so forth. Find out what area of treatment and theory practice could be used to help the
We can pretend that sports are not the main source of entertainment in today’s society. Whether we are athletes playing the sport, avid fans watching our teams and their statistics, or the coaches, it is our character to always be in tuned to what is going on in the competitive sports world. Now, our competitive nature can either give us an edge in life or, in opposition, can cause us to burn bridges. To elaborate, being competitive shows determination, hard work, and is a form of utilizing our gifted talents, resulting in positive outcomes; this is referring to anything in life, not just athletics. On the other hand, being competitive to the point that we are losing teammates, friends, and those close to us shows poor sportsmanship and can have a negative effect on character.
According to “Ray Rice Is an Outlier: Most Domestic Abuse Suspects Play On,” “Brett Myers, a pitcher for Philadelphia, was charged with assaulting his wife on a Boston street in 2006 after witnesses said he struck her in the face and pulled her hair” (Crouse). These issues of domestic abuse are becoming more common. This is just one example of misogyny in professional sports. While some argue that misogyny in the professional sports arena is not a serious issue, there have been several instances of physical assault of players’ girlfriends and wives, there is an over-sexualization and harassment of women in the industry, and there are large differences between male and female pay. These issues can be improved by enforcing harsher punishments
“Now watch me whip” Nope, not anymore Odel. This new rule of players not being able to taunt or celebrate after a play is outrageous. Looking from a player’s standpoint, they probably are thinking what is so bad about celebrating after an in game accomplishment. I definitely do not like this either because I look at a player and see their celebration in a certain way swaying weather or not. I pick them for my fantasy football team. If they are over the top and crazy, I might not pick that player because if he gets out of control during a game they also might get out of control during everyday life, like possible outburst on their girlfriend resulting in domestic violence.
When athlete misconduct if first brought up I immediately associate it with football and domestic abuse. As I conducted my research for this topic that is generally the most common sport and crime which supported my initial reaction to hearing “athlete misconduct off the field”. Now this brought me to thinking why is that and what has the most common on field punishment been for these athletes? Many different article such as the espn article “The NFL is finding out just how complicated domestic violence punishments can be” address why football players seem to be the usual suspects. There is no pinpoint answer but the article addresses that one possibility is that these men are raised there entire life playing a sport of violence where the goal is to hit another player as hard as possible. They are basically modern day gladiators. To expect these men to just have a switch where they go play and practice and hit things then turn that switch off go home and are completely peaceful is somewhat absurd. As sad as it is to think about the athletes have somewhat of an expectation to be violent off of the field, because of how they are breed to play on the phone. Since they are made this way on the field it is quite reasonable to think would think that they would be punished off of the field for those
Although some athletes get charged severely for crimes, the majority get off easily. This is shown with cases regarding domestic violence. Domestic violence is a serious crime that can result in fines and jail time. The NFL has received major despise on how they have handled past cases of domestic violence. This is shown in the article, National football league struggles with handling of domestic violence, “85 out of 713 arrests since 2000 were for domestic violence, suspension is only 6 games, and was originally 2 games or dismissed.” (NFL struggles with handling of domestic violence). Women see a quote like this and get very mad because domestic violence is often ignored by a multi-billion dollar company. Also of “the four major leagues-the NBA, NFL, MLB, and NHL- the NFL is the only one to
When the Ray Rice story broke, there was much discussion about what should be done by the NFL to punish him for his actions. He was ultimately suspended and cut from his team the Ravens. For the most part, perpetrators get a slap on the wrist. They may or may not be arrested. They may have to go to domestic violence classes. Law enforcement may or may not be empathetic towards the victim. Each state has its own set of consequences for perpetrators. In some states the victim can even be fired due to the domestic violence she or he is experiencing while the perpetrator remains unscathed. Perpetrators should be prosecuted. Perpetrators should have a consequence, not the victim. There should be a protocol followed by professional sports, law enforcement, prosecutors so that the seriousness of the offense is understood by all. A slap on the wrist is not enough to show the serious negative impacts domestic violence can have. And if our law enforcement and courts do not take it seriously, how can anyone else? This lack of consistency helps to foster the victim blaming mentality.
One issue that has impacted the landscape of collegiate sports is the current situation at Baylor University. Athletes, specifically football players have been accused of acts of sexual violence. This is a big problem but not where the controversy ends. Art Briles, head football coach, Ian McCaw, athletic director, and Ken Starr, president of the university, have all resigned for their roles in failing to investigate allegations of misconduct.
Hockey, football, and boxing all share something in common; and no I am not referring to the skill, quickness, and finesse that is required for these sports. I am indeed referring to the intense physicality that all three of these sports strongly value. As a devoted hockey fan, I am a witness to a great part of the physicality that takes place. Therefore, I am well aware and understand that physicality is crucial in order to compete in most sports, but we have to draw the line somewhere. When there is primary intent to injure and physically hurt someone this is considered “violence”. Violence is becoming increasingly prevalent in sports, and a majority of society is passive to the negative effects it is imposing on society.
This article is about the violence that all players go through when participating in the sports they play in. The viewpoint of the author is that if you get sentenced jail time for violence in the streets what makes it different in sports that the violence is not prosecuted?.
