Interest groups consists of individuals who share a common political goal and are united for the purpose of influencing government decisions to make up an organization. According to Walker (1983), “Interest Groups exert influence over legislators, bureaucrats, and the public” (p. 390). The goals of these groups are the represent the publics interest on certain topics. Interest groups survive off the common goals of the people and strive to represent their interest in way that will benefit the country and demonstrate the state American pluralism is in. Public Citizen a consumers group is our voice in the capital. They are made up of five policy groups: Congress Watch Division, the Energy Program, Global Trade Watch, the Health Research Group, and Litigation Group. They are not funded through government or corporate money but through donations and grants to their foundation (Citizen.org). A religious group the Anti-Defamation League, “protects Jewish people and secure justice and free treatment to all.” This group is made up of educator, experts, and activists who fight against anti-Semitism and all forms of hate (Adl.org). The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence is a second amendment group focused on ending gun deaths in America. He came up with three campaigns to help his cause. 1. To have background checks on all gun sales. 2. Stop gun dealers. 3. Create national conversation about the dangers of guns (BradyCampaign.org). A well known reproductive rights group is Planned Parenthood. It’s a 100-year-old organization focused on giving information to women about reproductive health care, sex education, and provides health care to millions (plannedparenthood.org). ACLU, the American Civil Liberties Union, is a human rights interest group works to ensure and defend our rights
Interest groups connect business and the government because they lobby to congress for the businesses interest. They lobbyist do not work for any party only for the interest of different organizations.

Interest groups have a lot of influence over decision that the government makes and has made. These groups, when formed right, are highly organized and have a definite agenda they are trying to push that is important to them. Interest groups will lobby in congress as well as other levels of government to get new laws and regulations passed.
Interest groups attain a reputation for being powerful through their membership size, their financial resources, and their strategies and tactics.
Interest groups are structured groups which try to influence government to adopt certain policies or measures. The responsibilities of an interest group can be never-ending. One of the main responsibilities of an interest group is giving the underrepresented a chance to speak out on issues they are passionate about. The Rainbow/Push Coalition is an interest group I believed I would be passionate about.
Public interest lobbies form a linkage element between citizens and governmental elites. In lobbying they articulate what they perceive to be the issue positions of certain sectors of society. Public interest groups also play an important role in facilitating the political participation of their members and related attentive publics. By helping to bring new issues to the table, interest groups influence the shape of political agendas.
Interest groups can be a private organization or a voluntary association, that try to influence public policy on its favor. There are two types of interest groups, there is private interests which is for interest of its members and there are public interests which is try to affect society. Lobbyists is a member of an interest group and it tries to influence the behavior of public officials. Democracy is the system of government where an entire population is represented through elected representatives. But there is a significant aspect in the US government that also acts as elected representatives which are in the form of interest groups. But interest groups do not have a real place in congress. For them to affect motions in congress they need to utilise their powers of persuasion to influence the right people.

After electing their representatives, some individuals wish to be more involved in legislative decisions that affect them, so they take to lobbying and joining interest groups. This often provides them with an atmosphere of individuals who think like they do, while also allowing them to play more of a role than just voting for a few people to represent them. Lobbying and interest groups also allow for issues to be brought to the attention of the legislature and provide a way for these groups to talk to the legislators, whether it is over dinner or at a concert. Since 1971, the organization has have successfully challenged the abusive practices of the pharmaceutical, nuclear and automobile industries. Public Citizen has five policy groups: Congress Watch division, the Energy Program, Global Trade Watch, the Health Research Group and our Litigation Group. According to the Public Citizen website, the organization does not participate in partisan political activities or endorse any candidates for elected office. The most common activity for interest groups is lobbying. But that is not the only activity they are involved in, they are also involved in activities like forming Political Action Committees (PAC’s) and election activities. Lobbying is done by groups to influence the government decisions on policies. In the United States, almost all of the interest groups employ lobbyists to influence policy making. Lobbyists work to try to persuade governmental officials. Some ways they achieve their goals are persuasion, economic leverage, and disruption. The most important rule to lobbying is the entrance. You must be able to influence an official. The more spread out the interest groups money is throughout the country, the more likely it is that the legislators will listen to the concerns of that group.
