Canines also help improve a person’s social and emotional health. In the 2009 New York Times Magazine, Melissa Fay Greene, writes about Karen Shirk in her article titled, “Wonder Dog”. Karen Shirk, a thirty-year-old woman diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, a rare neuromuscular disease, noticed the change in herself and people around her. Strangers greeted the tubed up woman in the motorized chair whenever her dog, Ben, her German Shepard, was around. The despair she said she had once felt was now replaced with optimism and ambition. In present day, Karen Shirk is now CEO of her own facility, which she named 4 Paws For Ability, for cognitively impaired adults and children. In Lisa Field’s article “ 6 Ways Pets Can Improve Your Health”, Field’s

Man’s best friend: you would think that that title would conjure up images of humans, or even our closest cousins in the animal kingdom, such as monkeys, apes, and chimpanzees. However, the first image that enters most humans head is the same image that would have induced fear hundreds of years ago, the not so distant heir to the wolf: dogs. The same creatures that we feuded with for survival now take up a huge part of our lives and make up a large portion of the images littering the internet. Dogs take part in everything from movies to family gatherings, to search and rescue and emotional or physical service. Nearly fifty percent of American households alone have at least one dog, and between all of us we own 83.3 million dogs, a number not to be trifled with. Imagine walking through the door and a small pup comes to your feet to greet you, then you look around the puppy’s food is one the floor, his bed next to it, after that you realize you just got a puppy. I was very excited on this day but, little did I know that I would still have to train him, feed him, and shower him. And my dad never wanted this dog in the first place and knew we wouldn’t care for it. For I believe you should always listen to your parents and what they always say. Parents always say “ I’m not saying this for me I’m saying this for your own good.”and most of the time they are right.
Have you ever purchased a dog without considering how you're going to pay for its food and how you're going to pay for its medical needs? Well, I have. I'm going to be telling you about the time I purchased a husky and sold him a week later. Jazmin and I tended to get stressed out about little things like where he's going to sleep or what kind of food will we feed him. So please, always study the breed of the dog you're thinking of adopting, dogs are very hard work.

A mature dog requires less shots and veterinarian visits than a puppy (assuming the mature dog does not have any medical problems). For puppies, there is also a higher need for chew toys and the purchasing of special puppy food. Puppies are also known for chewing up items other than the ones purchased for chewing. That will create the cost of replacing those items whether it be shoes or a remote control.
Dogs become vital to you, they are something you wouldn’t ever give up. My dog, Carly has taught me so many life lessons, even when she can’t even talk. Likewise, She has taught to be a kind, positive, selfless human being. Yes, having a dog may be challenging, stressful work, but in the end, it’s all worth it. Ever since I was a little girl I have always wanted a dog. When I was about three, my cousins unexpectedly lost their chocolate lab, Bailey. I don’t remember Bailey, but I do remember when they brought home a yellow lab puppy named Tess. The moment I laid eyes on Tess, it sparked something inside me and from that point on, I had a desire to one day have my own dog.
