Back when I was a dog handler in Afghan, we ran into a lot of trouble. Part of my job is to help find mines and such for the bomb tech guys. First time back in the field in a while. What they don’t tell you about the military is that you may easily be stuck guarding a military prison or patrolling a the outer border of a base.
It was my final year in the military and then I was gonna go to College, be an engineer. I never wanted to be an engineer, couldn’t think of what I wanted to do and I had to choose something. Engineering I thought, not bad at designer or math. Just never liked either. I guess I only found that out while reflecting during my years on duty. Boston College, a few months and thousands of miles away. To be honest I chose Boston to chase after a girl, her name Martha Sinclair. We met in middle school, it feels like she only noticed me when I said I was going overseas about the beginning of senior year. We hadn’t been dating by then, but now we are. I didn’t wanna see that relationship end, so I panicked and chose a school I wasn’t damn near interested in.
But I ran away from that reality by becoming a dog handler. That’s where we are now, my dog sniffing faster than a heart can beat,

Every time his head was up and his owner was a little drunk he’d get hit on the head, I guess his owner enjoyed for another living being to be afraid of him. That dumb pup couldn’t do nothing wrong to deserve such a hell for a good two weeks of his life. Now every time someone pets him, Vil stays small and pretends they're not there. It makes him more wolf like in a way. He doesn’t pay attention to the humans around him. He stays hunting. It took him a year of me being with him everyday of service for him not to cover his chest in fear. The only guys he really trusts like that are me and his old trainer. No one knows how an abused dog made training but now that he is, Vilkas is damn good at what he
I'd like to start off my introducing myself, I'm Jimmy Reginald Fontenot. I've spent a majority of my life working for the State Police in the wonderful state of Louisiana. Before my 12 years in the State Police I was a Canine Handler for the St. Landry Parish sheriff's office for 3 years, worked there for a total of 4. As you can tell I'm a career lawman and will continue till my last breath to serve the beautiful city of Los Santos. I'd like to take a moment to also thank the previous commander, Roman Stakic, for nominating me as the new Canine Services Commander. I will do him, the department, and the fine city of Los Santos proud and continue his legacy through the Canine Service. I'd also like to address that the Canine Services Unit will
After reading the articles Dog’s on duty and Service Dogs, Patients Bond Through Health Care Partnership, I decided that the first skill a dog must learn to become a service dog/police dog is a high sense of smell, especially to become a police dog. From the article Dog’s on duty: “He and other police dogs across the country are skilled at sniffing out danger and keeping people safe.” Dogs are said to have a sense of smell 1000 times better than a human being which is helpful if a dog needs to sniff out a bomb or something equally as dangerous. Those are my reasons why I think dogs absolutely need a good sense of smell.
Service dogs have to follow distinctive guidelines to become a certified service dog. Service dogs must be able to respond to commands (basic obedience and skilled tasks), be able to respond to hand or voice signals asking the dog to come, sit, stay, lie down, and heeling. This specific training method is where the dog is able to maintain a relative position to the handler, regardless of how the handler moves (Kirsten). As a result, to make sure service dogs show the capability of helping their owner, they need to perform at least three tasks to alleviate some of the client's difficulties with their disability. Dogs should be spayed or neutered, have current vaccinations, and are required a minimum of 120 hours of training for each dog by a
My interest is Service Dog Training. You have to have a degree in animal SCIENCE to be a guide dog trainer 4 children with special needs. You have to get into a GOOD college to even learn animal science. (I have liked Service Dog Training and the idea of it since I was 9!) 4 Paws for Ability is a website for Service dogs, and when you’re old enough, you can volunteer there, or foster a service pup, and after it’s a year old, you have to take it back, so it can be put with a Child with special needs. Citation: I found this out when I wanted to be different than everyone that wanted to be a Veterinarian.
There are many people in the United States that have guide dogs as their eyes. They are hard to obtain because of requirements that are need like being physical and mental impairments. Cost of breeding the dog, sending the dog to school, and the time of training with the dog. All in all, there is more to think about went getting a guide dog.
Service dog are very helpful to people in need that’s why they are so important. When the puppies are about 8-12 months they are away from their moms, so they can be trained to help people in need. According to “The wonders Veterans”,The dogs can help other people when they are not able to do things on their own, so they can help a lot. Also these dogs are very well trained and very smart.
Dogs dramatically impact the lives of people in numerous aspects. Not only do they work for humans tirelessly, but they do it with a smile on their face and a wag in their tail, and they are non-judgmental towards people with disabilities. People utilized the help and companionship dogs provided even hundreds of years ago. However, many people see dogs as futile, considering training, money, time, and work that is put into owning a dog, let alone having it specifically trained to do a certain job. It is also risky putting so much time and effort into a dog, being aware that they are very capable of making mistakes just as humans are. Also, many people do not know the depth of the work that dogs provide, or
For a number of children with autism having a companion dog is the difference between life and death. Methodically trained guide dogs help create an environment where autistic children are comfortable enough to live a more ordinary lifestyle. Autism spectrum disorder is a major public health problem that is the most common neurological disorder affecting 1 out of every 110 births in the US (Autism Society, 2009). ASDs can range in severity from Asperger Syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism where the child can function relatively well in society, to autistic disorder or classical ASD, which severely inhibits the child’s ability to socialize or communicate (NINDS). Autism manifests itself most strikingly as impairments in formation of
In today’s evolving society, there is more mobility that ever for people with disabilities. One of the things that allows this to happen is the use of service animals. Problems however arise when people try to cheat the system. Attempts to pass off pets as service animals, improperly trained animals, and businesses with lack of knowledge on laws all contribute to ongoing frustrations. The need for a centralized training standard as well as government registration and regulation of service animals is clear and immediate. If standards can be established within breeding clubs for “Good Citizen” training, then it can be done for service dogs. Then, once
There are many ways that service dogs make a difference in the life of a person with disabilities. Furthermore there is a lot to learn from service animals, starting from the history of how it started to what the cost of owning and training a service animal. To the laws behind being able to own a service dog, and where dogs are allowed and how much training a dog needs in order to be able to be certified. Also what the requirements are to be able to own one, and the associations that offer seeing eye dogs for free to be able to help out those who are in need of a seeing eye dog.
Walking into my final class of the day, I noticed that a fellow student is with a dog. As I got closer to the couple, the urge to pet the animal washed over me. My hands began to itch to feel the fur on my skin and to find the extraordinary spot behind the ear that all dogs love. However, a red vest caught my eyes with the words “SERVICE DOG” and “DO NOT PET” that yelled at me to not go through with my actions. Reluctantly obeying the warnings, I sat down next to the pair with an unaccomplished mission that was put before me. Trying to ignore the desire to pet the dog, another student asked if they could pet the dog. I heard the owner respond with, “I’m sorry. He’s still in training.” After hearing this, I realized that we forget that these dogs are on the job to help out their owners with their medical or mental disabilities and we, the outsiders, only see these dogs for our amusement. By defining what is considered a service animal, what the policies are for college campuses, what these animals are trained specifically for a certain numbers of tasks and we, as students, must respect their job and their owners. However, there are those that abuse the power of the loose definition of a service animal.
Introduction: It seemed so far away, and all of a sudden I had to make the decision. A decision that would change the rest of my life. From the time I was little I knew I wanted to go to college, and here I am. I have always had the desire to continue my education and gain many experiences after I graduated from high school. I didn’t ever thing twice about continuing my education
In this section, we will explain how the discussion on what it was like before the veterans had a service dog and also if the VA is going to be doing any studies, to see if service dogs are really effective at helping the veterans get back to a more normal life. David Steele who got his Master of Science in Human Development, did a study on veterans and their relationship, to see what their PTSD symptoms were like before they had a service dog in their life. According to Steele “two superordinate themes emerged from the couples’ descriptions of their relationship prior to getting a service dog”: “Perceived loss of self” and “Living with the enemy” (39). In another article by Myra Taylor, Mary Edwards, and Julie Pooley, who also asked veterans what they felt like prior to having a service dog, “they were in a constant state of hypervigilance”, which means “always anxious and on guard in crowded situations; feeling uncomfortable and
Imagine a life with a best friend that never gets mad at people and never talks back. A famous saying you hear dad to day is a dog is the only thing on the earth that loves you more than they love themselves. This is a pretty ideal situation for most people. Studies show that a dog can be more than just a pet. A dog can be a best friend, a listener, and a healer. Animals have influenced humans through out our evolution they have become domestic and we have become reliable on our house pets for many reasons. Dogs assist many different groups of people. They play a major role in child development, heal the sick, and benefit the elderly.
People typically have misunderstandings about dogs because they treat them like humans, which is unnatural in the dog world. However, there is nothing wrong with loving your pet. The problem is that the owners will let bad behavior fester and eventually get out of control. There are even some owners who will take the dog’s side above their kid’s because
