Does Pop Culture have an effect on pop culture? The predominance of pop culture in today's society defiantly has some effect. In particular, it affects the way teenagers/young adults think of themselves, how they express themselves, and the way they act towards other people. Pop culture can have both a negative and positive effect. For example, it can inform people on sensitive topics (i.e culture appropriation or stripping someone of their ethnic backgrounds), help people find themselves and express themselves, but pop culture can also be negative by making people self conscious and making them feel the need to change themselves. An important part of every teenagers maturation is their self definition. The way they think of themselves is
Adolescence is a time when everything we've ever known is being changed. Relationships, friends, thoughts, and other things that shape who we are become more awkward and confusing and are changed from what they have been in the past. Consequently, we will change also because all these things shape who we are. During a period of such change, it's hard to know who we really are. Adolescence is the time when we find out who we truly are, but not until we know who we aren't. Adolescents use common words, actions, and rivalries to try to define their unique personalities, goals, and ideas. They label
Pop culture, what does this term even mean? It seems to be a word that contains subjects of media, social structure, and society as a whole. According to the dictionary, pop culture is defined as “cultural activities or commercial products reflecting, suited to, or aimed at the tastes of the general masses of people”. In the society we live in today, we are constantly surrounded by pop culture, either that is with television, magazines, different sources of social media and/or exposure to others. Due to pop culture being such a dominant contribution into our world today, it has effected many parts of society. The domination of social media has created idealistic views that are stressed upon female adolescents in particular. Upon media’s influence, traditional tactics and work have been modified in order to keep up with our technology oriented society. This alters the schools and education systems. Through the use of television, social media and other means of pop culture, serious study is necessary due to the negative effects it has on the younger generation and the effects it has for their futures.

Every teenager is figuring out who they are, who they want to be and what they want to have done before their life ends. Nobody wants to die, not being remembered right? Who we truly are is partly formed by ourselves, as well as our upbringing. These two factors have a great influence on a teenager’s developing personality. In the same way our environment controls the creation of us as a human being.
The majority of adults are frightened to change the television channel while in the presence of children. Most adults are aware that when doing so, there is a great chance that a provocative scene may be on the screen at the time. These scenes should not be seen by a child. Furthermore, the reason these obscured scenes are on the television is because filmmakers are getting rich from them. Because of American popular culture, parents are worried to even allow their kids to watch television, a movie, etcetera.
The typical American teenager goes through many stages of psychosocial change from the ages between 12 and 18. Adolescence is a difficult time for most because it is a huge transition time from being a child to becoming an adult. Many of these changes or challenges are so common that they are experienced by almost everyone. Some are brought on by physical changes in appearance and hormones while others are more psychological. Famous psychologist, Sigmund Freud, believed that a person’s biological activity will motivate their behavior and development. (Life Span page 36) Adolescent teens will most likely have difficulty with social, parental and sexual issues, physical changes to their body, identity confusion, a tendency to participate

Rock and roll is a genre that started with groups wanting to try something new, and grunge took that desire to an all new level. Grunge mixed pieces of punk, heavy metal, and some pop in to one all new genre. The effects of grunge brought the subgenres Riot Grrrl, Slacker Rock, and Britpop. All three of these subgenres had their own effects on culture and created a new community around them. Riot Grrrl and Slacker Rock especially had a life style formed around them.

Despite the large amount of people that feel confident and comfortable in expressing themselves freely, many adolescents have a deteriorating concept of self because of the belief that they should have to conform to their peer’s ideals. The identities of these children are being dictated by a need of acceptance from prominent social groups in their environment; however, teenagers must realize one’s own individuality as something beneficial and recognizing that conforming can become problematic in certain situations.
As young people progress through the adolescent stage they begin to view the world and themselves very differently than as they did a few years earlier. They become more intellectual. In the later stages of adolescence young people become less concerned about their appearance and social acceptance and more concerned about worldly issues and "who they really are." From the required text I have learned that by late adolescence, most teenagers think of themselves in terms of enduring traits, beliefs, personal philosophy, and moral standards. As they get older, children and adolescents define themselves less and less by what they look like and more and more by what they believe or feel (Child and Adolescent Behavior, pg. 196).
