Does Media Cause Eating Disorders?

Although difficult to point fingers at a single source for the reason eating disorders exist, it can be said that media, specifically, does have a negative influence on the amount of confidence in one’s self-image. On the other hand, media is not the only one to blame and therefore, media should not be overlooked, but other sources have proven guilty as well such as genetics, environment, and culture. With altered images being presented in formats of media such as magazines, commercials and social media, many teens find themselves pressured to look the same. Factors such as genetics, environment, and culture can all have influences that lead to an eating disorder. This has been proven through cross sectional studies among metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas as well as longitudinal studies analyzing the fluctuations in ideals among cultures over an extended period of time. Between these studies, as well as many others, it is evident that there are various causes for an eating disorder other than media. One must consider how the ideals of a certain culture may impact the individual feeling that if they don’t look quite the same as everyone else in their culture, they don’t feel they fit in. This feeling of being an outcast is a common cause for eating disorders and parents who carry out certain traditions and cultures should be aware of how these expectations could impact their children. This also includes the overall environment of the individual as one should be cautious about how their loved one’s surroundings are influencing their ideas. Overprotection is not necessary, but there should be caution when addressing the topics of body image, weight, and especially dieting. A negative take on any of these topics, could produce insecurities that promote the beginning of an eating disorder. Eating disorders have very dangerous consequences and the risks should not be taken lightly. Therefore, one must consider that it is not just media to blame for eating disorders, but that other influences should be given some of the blame as
