Does American History Play A Role In Our Future

Sunday, October 1, 2017, thousands of people gathered at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas for a country music festival. At 10:08pm, gunman, Stephen Paddock, opened fire from the hotel just above the field aiming at the thousands of innocent people. Paddock fired constant rounds for about 10-15 minutes, taking 58 innocent lives, injuring over 500, and then taking his own life. This is now considered the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

There have been many horrific shootings in the history of the United States. Despite that, the shooting in Las Vegas was the worst shooting in modern US history. It affected a lot of people throughout the country.

History most times is written by the victor’s, but only certain people are included in the books. The reason history is written by the victors is because their survivors where most times the losers aren’t. The victors overwhelmingly influence the history and what is written and therefore don’t tell the tales of people they fought, but rather themselves and how they won. When you read a history book it doesn’t tell you about the losers. For America most of its history was dominated by white men and was also written by them. Another example is the Civil war in which the north was victorious therefore they influenced America, and what people believe right. Initially, it is important for High School students to learn about American History because of the varied cultures that make up our country. One of the most influential cultures was that of the Indian natives. To this day, these people still have a very unique culture to call their own. Another Culture that was important to the making of the Americas was colonial. On the contrary to the Indians though, this culture split into two parts and sparked the revolutionary war. I believe this is crucial to learn, as America would not be the same without our varied traditions.

Virginia Tech Massacre is recorded as the deadliest shooting incident by a single gunmen in U.S. history. According to Everytown.org, since December of 2012 there have been more than 120 school shootings, 55 of which happened on a college campus.

June 12th 2016. At first glance this date means nothing to many, but as you dive deeper you realize that this date claims the deadliest mass shooting in United States history and the largest loss of life due an act of terrorism since 9/11. This is in reference to the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida where 49 people were murdered and another 53 patrons were injured. This is at the hands of Omar Mateen, 29, who was an American born citizen but was a self proclaimed ISIS member. Mateen called 9-11 mid attack trying to plead his allegiance to ISIS. After a three hour standoff with club goes still inside a SWAT team eventually rammed into a side of the building and the gunman was shot by the police force.

On October 1, 2017, a mass shooting occurred at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. A gunman opened fire on the outdoor festival crowd from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino across Las Vegas Boulevard during the closing performance by singer Jason Aldean. With at least 61 fatalities (including the perpetrator) and 527 injuries, this incident surpassed the Pulse shooting as the deadliest mass shooting in recent U.S. history.The shooter was identified as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock of Mesquite, Nevada.

On April 16, 2007, a 23-year-old student, named Seung-Hui Cho, goes on a shooting spree killing 32 Americans in campus in Blacksburg, Virginia. On December 2, 2015, a married couple, Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, opened fire and killed 14 Americans on an employee meeting at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California. On June 17, 2015, Dylann Roof shot and killed nine Americans inside the church in Charleston, South Carolina (2016). Ladd Everitt, has served as the Director of Communications of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, mentions that there are approximately more than 32,000 Americans have died from gun violence every year in the United States

October 1, 2017: the date of the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history; 58 murdered, hundreds more injured. Unfortunately, this is just one example of an awful mass shooting; breaking families apart, and scarring others for life. Although it is beyond tragic that there have been so many tragedies like this, with the help of forensics and investigators they have been able to find similarities in mass murderers, and with more public awareness comes the hope that in the future, these disasters can be prevented.

As stated before mass shootings have increased drastically throughout the decades. Just within 2017, the number of mass shootings are 293 with several deaths and injuries, (“Gun Violence Archive”). Within the last 10 years, the deadliest mass shootings have occurred in America history, (CNN). Recently in Las Vegas, Nevada held a music festival for people to enjoy and listen to music, but a shooting changed the evening for many. A man was in an hotel near the event and shot down towards the people and killed a total of 58 people and injured at least 200, (CNN). The Orlando shooting was right behind it with a total of 49 dead, (CNN). Since this has become a part of our everyday lives, we rarely hear about all the mass shootings that kill not even into the double digits.

It’s come to the point in America where mass shootings are widespread and more” normal than ever. In perspective, 17 of the 30 deadliest mass sh have occurred in the last 10 years. The Las Vegas Shooting, also known as the deadliest shooting in modern U.S history took place on the night of October 1, 2017. A man by the name Stephan Paddock, a 64 year old man, opened fire from his room in the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino onto concertgoers below. Taking the coward's way out, Paddock killed himself and today his motive for the shooting is still unknown.

There was many mass shootings in the U.S. I will be talking about some today. One mass shooting is in Las Vegas on October 1, 2017. There was 59 deaths and 527 injured. The gunman was at the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Casino Resort.

He sits, looking into the distance. An old man sitting in his deer stand, in the crisp, cold morning. He waits, scanning inbetween the trees, searching for what he hopes to be in his belly for dinner. I like to think this old man, hoping, searching, waiting for something to happen is a lot like America, hoping for something to happen. America should hope that our future is safe and free.

Americas history is what defines us and who we are as a country. We were built on hard work, sacrifice, wanting to be free and independent to be who we want to. Now a-days, we seem to have fallen away from this. Everything is given to us so easily on our computer and through technology that we have no need to work hard anymore. This is the downfall in humanity because as we keep going, life will continue to get easier and we won’t want to do anything. History is our hope so that we can learn from what we did in our past and how things were done then.For starters, we can see what mistakes we did and make sure we don’t do them again. If we continue to the same thing over and over again, there’s no way for our society to improve from this. Our

Americans in the U.S. take pride in these standards and in the freedoms that this democratic nation has established. The 20th century will always be remembered in American history as a century of radical changes on the social and political fronts of the nation. Literature, too, evolved quickly from specific, compartmentalized fields which fit into categories, to works which had no set definition—nobody knew what to do with them.
