Do we need more or less gun control? Everyone has a different opinion. Some say more guns mean more protection, while others argue that guns cause an increase in violence and death. There are several points and opinions for either side of the argument, which is why it is such a difficult altercation to settle. Gun control is a controversial matter, which has been an issue since the late 1990’s, and it needs to be resolved.
The gun control affair remains a constant topic today as it was in 1999. With the upcoming Presidential election, politics are everywhere. Why should we have less gun control? First, an enormous reason is the second amendment. It clearly states that everyone has the right to bear arms. It is in the Constitution, so why is it being questioned? Next, guns don’t kill people, people do. This is a scenario that the public does not often agree upon. I completely agree with it because it is strikingly true. Guns are not the reason murders are occurring. You can murder someone many ways that do not involve guns, so they are obviously not the problem. Lastly, citizens have the right to self-protection. It is important that everyone can always feel safe within his or her surroundings. These days, this is rarely true. If criminals can carry weapons with them and get away with harming innocent civilians, everyone should be able to have a chance to fight back. If someone started attacking my family/friends, or myself, I would want to be able to stand up and fight for our lives. Why shouldn’t we have more gun control? First, guns aren’t safe. There are too many accidents involved with children, and too many criminals are allowed to purchase these weapons. Second, there are loopholes in current gun regulations and basically anyone can gain access to the weapon. Misguided individuals such as the mentally ill and criminals should not be allowed to purchase guns because they will execute serious actions that will damage many lives. Third, citizens should not be armed, they should be informed. They should carry pepper spray, lock their doors, and know how to call 911 if need be. Honestly, I do not agree with any of these points.
