Do The Right Thing: Racial Tension And Freedom Of Speech

Decent Essays

Do The Right Thing is a showcase of racial tension and freedom of speech. One thing I applaud this movie for is resisting temptation to display either side as clearly “right.” It definitely displays prejudice on Sal’s side to choose only to display Italian-American’s on his wall, especially so given that his pizzeria is in a predominantly African-American neighborhood but in the same sense, his ignorance is his right, as is the choice to patron another restaurant. Tension arises from Sal’s blunt choice to segregate the wall and quickly escalate from there. Eventually Radio Raheem is killed by police, who arrived to break up the protest. Which further sparks the conflict, spurring the onlookers to turn their attention toward Sal and his sons.
