Do not go gentle into that good night.
Old age should burn and rave at close of night;
Rage, rage, against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle “(Condle, page 96)” Do not go gentle is a hidden poem in a locket that Cassia’s grandfather gave to her minutes before he passed. She kept it for a long time and shared it with the person that she loves. They both memorized it, and then she burned it. The poem is important to the plot because it’s telling her to not listen to the society and fight for what you want in life. In the end she ends up leaving Oria her hometown, and her family sends her to this camp and she’s telling herself to not go gentle,

I didn’t,
And neither did the people who watch,
They watched for years.
They watch now. “(Condle, page 250)” Too much to carry is a poem that describes Ky. His cousin got killed by an anomaly. Anomalies are people that are deadly. When Ky’s cousin died, he got adopted by his Uncle and Aunt. Officials would always watch him to see everything he did. He felt like he couldn’t do anything he wanted to. When he started hanging out with Cassia he felt different, he felt the urge to fight against society. It’s important to the the whole story because Ky and Cassia are starting to realize that they need to fight.
I read things I shouldn’t read,
And learn things I’m not meant to know;
I might be falling in love with someone else. “(Condle, page 195)” I know is a poem that Cassia relates to because she knows things that she shouldn’t know, like knowing how to wright. She loves someone else besides Xander. She’s falling in love with Ky and she knows it. At first she tries to stop the feelings but then she just feels like she’s meant to be with Ky. She traded this poem with the archivist. This poem is important because she likes Ky and not Xander, and it changes the whole plot because she was matched with
In chapter 19 on page 211 Cassia is thinking, “I want to reach up and touch that skin under his eyes, the one place I see any vulnerability in him, make him feel better. And then I could run my fingers there, across his cheekbones, down to his lips, to the place where his jaw meets his neck, where his neck meets his shoulder line. I like the places where one part meets another, I think, eyes to cheek, wrist to hands” Cassia should only be thinking about Xander like that but since Xander was chosen for her she is looking for something that she can choose on her own and that is Ky. In chapter 24 page 259 Cassia tells us, “I let his kiss burn on my cheek and into my blood. I feel that kiss again.
In life we carry a lot of emotions, burdens and luggage. There is a quote from a great poet that reads. “It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves” in “Things They Carried”. The author Tim o Brien, creates a story about a soldier and his life after the war and struggles that he has to go through and the people around him seem to go through. Tim Obrien writes this story, as a 43 years old man which is recalling his previously experiences as a foot solider in Vietnam. “On their feet they carried jungle boots-2.1 pounds- and Dave Jensen carried 3 pairs of socks” (Obrien 270). The theme revealed in “The Things They carried” is that you can keep your spirits alive by moving and carrying your
The things they carried was a very interesting book that was filled with various stories. They all took place during the Vietnam War and follow multiple protagonists that reappear in later stories. Throughout the story, there is a vast number of themes and symbolism. One theme I found interesting is the theme of physical and emotional burdens. This was especially noticeable in ‘’The Things They Carried’’, where they were carrying both literally and figurative. ‘’ They carried the common secret of cowardice barely restrained, the instinct to run or freeze or hide, and in many respects this was the heaviest burden of all, for it could never be put down, it required perfect balance and perfect posture.’’ (pg. 77) Sure enough, soldiers have to endure walking miles upon miles with a heavy backpack along with war equipment and standard m-16’s and such, but it becomes evident that the emotional burdens on their shoulders weigh more than the physical objects. These burdens come in the form of grief, sadness, and a vast number of what is mostly negative emotions. Jimmy Cross, the protagonist of this short story, is a perfect example. He got extremely distracted from his duty as a lieutenant. He even lost one of his men. And yet he could not stop thinking about his love for someone who clearly didn’t love him back. It’s times like that, especially in a war, that require you to put
Burdens affect every person daily. From carrying a backpack to school, to dealing with a family member who is causing drama, everyone knows the heaviness of a burden. In Tim O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried” O’Brien describes the physical and emotional baggage of young soldiers in Vietnam. O’Brien creates a very vivid and relatable feel with his story through the way he describes the physical, emotional, and actions of his characters due to the burdens of war.
Emotional baggage plays an important role in everyone’s life; it can help you cope in stressful situations, but it can also have negative effects on your mental state. In “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’ Brien, Jimmy Cross and Kiowa are drafted into the ongoing war with Vietnam; along with the struggle of this hallowing self journey they each have emotional baggage that they carry within themselves. In the novel, O'Brien demonstrates through Jimmy and Kiowa that their emotional baggage allows them to have a connection to home, gives them a reason to continue fighting, and lets them grieve over the friends they lost in the war. Jimmy Cross and Kiowa each have emotional baggage; although this can weigh them down it helps them connect to home and have that recognition of the peace they had once upon a time. Each of the men
When listening to the song “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked” by Cage the Elephant, the theories that best describe this song are the Techniques of Neutralization by Sykes and Matza, and the Rational Choice Theory by Cornish and Clark. Sykes and Matza outlined five techniques based on offenders coming up with excuses when committing crimes to defend themselves. On the other hand, Cornish and Clark discuss four decisions to commit crime that offenders are concerned about when deciding whether to involve themselves in crime, so they outweigh the risks vs. the rewards. In Sykes and Matza Techniques of Neutralization, the five techniques include; denial of responsibility, denial of injury, denial of the victim,
In Tim O´ Brien´s “The things they carried” soldiers carry plenty physical weight depending on necessity; however, mental stresses are heavier. The fear of death is a burden that the characters carry as well as nostalgia for their love ones. The heavy war equipment that they carry for survival, Kiowa´s trauma for ted lavender´s death and lieutenant cross concern of another tragedy happening are a sign of their fear of death equally are materialistic memories, reminiscence and lieutenant´s obvious obsession for Martha are signs of a burden of nostalgia.
1. In the book Matched, Cassie was given a poem by her grandfather at his final banquet. The poem Do not go gentle into the night was a way for her grandfather to tell her to fight, to go outside of the rules that were placed before her. Although Cassie may not know the significance in the poem at first, her grandfather trusted that she later would. Do not go gentle was a line in the poem Cassie repeated to herself frequently throughout the book.

I disagree with Lauren Slater’s theory that throughout a person's life, one will only surround themselves with ideas and people similar to their own because, it is easy to see that people enjoy controversy and over the course of our lives, our beliefs and ideas can change.
In the story The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien shows the reader a sense of depressing love. O’Brien uses the physical weight carried by the soldiers as a motif for the emotional burdens they must endure while fighting in Vietnam. A love of which is portrayed in the story with a soldier loving a woman more than his fellow soldiers. But this woman does not love him in the same way. O’Brien uses many literary devices throughout the story, and shall be covered in this text. The tone in the text is very prevalent, and O’Brien gives the reader easy access to find and understand them.
Visiting Barnard's Youtube channel and watching the video, 'Brilliantly Imperfect', I saw scrawled across a Muslim woman's graduation cap the statement, "children who carry the heartbeats of their motherland.” I thought about my parents and the journey we made from Egypt. Though they never had the opportunity to attend college, I could fulfill that dream for them. I could be like that Muslim woman.
Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night by Dylan Thomas explores death and how those facing it should fight for their lives because death is a heartbreaking subject to him. The writer is addressing his father and pleads him to resist the power of death as it would be devastating if the father was to die from the writers perspective. Throughout the poem, Thomas writes about different traits of men. Some aspects include wise, wild, good and grave which helps create a poem that covers all aspects of a person.
Many are rich many are poor many have money many don’t. Have you ever had a moment where you did something selfish for desperation of money and karma hit you right back with a right hook?. And felt regret towards yourself. In the short story “Why, You Reckon” the author uses irony and dialogue, to show the audience that money can't buy happiness.
"Do Not Go Gentle" is a heart grabbing, funny story that shows how caring Native Americans can be in using tribal ways for their survival in the modern world. The setting is a children's hospital in Seattle, where the mother preforms a ritual with a vibrator called "chocolate thunder" to help the healing of her son and eventually gives him the name Abraham.
