Standard 4: Diversity
1.Describe your evidences: What are they? In what context were they created and/or used? The first artifact I have attached for Standard Four: Diversity is a diversity project completed during the spring of 2015 for ED444 Methods and Materials for Teaching Social Studies and ED447 Instructional Technology. This project consists of different resources to use when teaching Kindergarten Social Studies Standard Three. This standard requires students to describe how rules offer safety at home, school, and in the community. This diversity project demonstrates activities that aid in individual experiences. The standard associated with diversity is the Kindergarten Standard Three as stated in the description above. The standard requires students to describe how rules offer safety at home, school, and throughout the community. To appeal to each student’s personal experiences, the teacher can relate the lesson to the student’s everyday experiences, meaning the students can use their knowledge of house rules to relate to the standard. Students of different backgrounds may have different rules depending on their culture or religion. For this specific diversity project, I included videos and virtual field trips to reinforce student learning. This provided auditory and visual aid to students.
b. How does the tutoring reflection demonstrate your knowledge of the major areas of exceptionality in learning? The tutoring reflection provided verifies my understanding that children learn differently. This student did not have any specific exceptionality in learning, but he was a visual learner. Each week, I planned a lesson that allowed me to use the best resources to enhance his learning. I discovered that the student excelled when using hands-on activities. I altered my lessons each week and planned lessons to include activities that used visual aids.

Since the school is not enrolled with a very diverse population, the staff created a very multicultural environment for the students to explore and learn in. The staff felt that even though the school is undiverse, the world is not and the students need to be educated in this area. The staff worked very hard at coming up with activities to teach multicultural issues. One example of how multicultural diversity was taught was through a “Foods from Around the World” lesson. The content competency I will be addressing is Standard 6: Professionalism, Criteria A. It states, “Adheres to federal and state laws, school policies, and ethical guidelines”. One thing that I have learned these last two years is my students are always watching what I do. The concept of diversity is one that individuals may not think of when they think of nursing. Diversity is a major component to nursing and the care that is provided to patients. The purpose of this paper is to reflect upon the diverse experiences that I have had in my personal and professional life. Program Component B, under environment #2: This component states, “the physical environment reflects cultural and ethnic diversity. This component is important because it shows that the children are learning about diversity. While observing the conference, I will look for indicators that the preschoolers have done activities that showcase diversity. In addition, I will be looking around the classroom to see what type of enhancements there are that promote cultural diversity. 1. I appreciate and understand the importance of diversity because of my diverse family background. First and foremost, my immediate family has hosted 2 foreign exchange students over the past 5 years. Our first exchange student, Veronica, was from Brazil, while our second exchange student, Pia, was from Germany.
