The Quest through My Reality
Former President Lyndon B. Johnson once said, “Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to win or lose.” This quote in itself explains my reasons for wanting to become a social worker, which is so that so that I can use my past experiences and work towards the future, so that no child feels forgotten. Also, this quote explains my goals, which are to either be a school or military social worker when I graduate. As well as, this quote explains my perspectives on different conversational topics. This paper, will explain how the reality of my life led me to want to pursue social work, my dreams after graduating and my thoughts on various subject matters.

If every person had the same opinions, nothing would change and people would be stuck in the same predicaments. Along with diversity in mindsets, is diversity in ethnicity and religion. I feel that it’s great that everyone is different and doesn’t appear the same, but I feel that people should always respect each other. Whether people have conflicting cultures or not, as long as they prize and respect somebody else’s culture, there won’t be as many problems. Moreover, as a social worker I would use my position to encourage the association of different cultures, as well as explain the positives in numerous backgrounds; since the quicker we are to finding the good in everyone, the quicker we are to finding unity and equality in the …show more content…
Though occasionally, problems might seem black and white, I will be driven to find unusual solutions to them that benefit my clients. As well as, personally, I will be obliged to learn to better deal with cultures I know nothing about; seeing that America as a whole, and my clientele’s culture could be extremely different from my own. For example, with the Navy, I could be stationed in Japan, and Japanese culture could be completely different from in the United States. So, I would be necessitated to use critical thinking to solve a situation there. I would have to find a way to procure my client the best support services possible, whether it be combining the two cultures or
I am very happy witht the progress that Vicky has made in her job so far. She has been with the Bureau about 8 months and she has become invaluable to us. She understands the division and bureau vision and direction. She is a real team player who actively participates in bureau meetings and activities such as coming up with a vision and mission statement for the PPI bureau.
What is diversity and what does it entail? Luther College defines diversity as “complex differences and similarities in perspectives, identities, and points of view among members of an institution as well as among individuals who make up the wider community.” Diversity has been a hot topic in today’s news and social networking arenas with the ever-changing race relations that are prevalent in our country and around the world. The changes in perception towards minorities and women hasn’t just affected these groups socially, but has brought forth different questions about the benefits that a truly diverse would place would have on companies. What this work will attempt to do is elaborate on the treatment of
Diversity has impacts everywhere and has impacted and changed Certified Public Accountants (CPA’s)? CPA’s are accountant that are certified through a national organization. They maintain that all financial statements to be completely accurate. When you take history into account it was always just the white men that could do anything that required higher education. This was also true for CPA’s at one time, of course this is not the case in the 21st century. Every company has a diversity statement, even Western Michigan University has one. These Diversity statements stat that the company does not take offense to or illegally discriminate agent’s people that fall into different categories. Some of the categories that I will be discussing are sex,
Diversity is present in all aspects of life, its been major topics for cultures forever and helps with all social or cultural probems of diputes. When you have such a huge populations of peopel there are bound to be a lot of differneces and ways of looking at things so ther has to be understanding involved otherwise nothing gets resolved. the key is to be accepting to everytone and never judge anyone regardless of differences. Diversity is extremely importante; in the work place, school, or over all population diversity is the key that unites it all. With diversity you get people from all walks of life that share their unique stories or create opportunities for new insight to be shared. Diversity is important because it recognizes that
I have had the opportunity to experience working with different teams. I currently work with a group of lab analyst at EMSL Analytical. In the past, I have worked with other members on executive boards for different organizations . I like working in teams, and I believe that in order to become a productive team member you have to be able to communicate effectively. As well as, having the ability to understand multiple viewpoints of those on your team. When working with others, I believe that I can bring certain aspects to the table. I tend to be more outgoing. Which enables me to talk to others, and understand what they need so that I can help in any way possible. I am very dependable, and when I am given a task I want to see it through to
Workplaces are becoming increasingly diverse, and this is a dynamic that is causing some tension between and among employees. What are the positives and negatives of diversity in the workplace? America is a place with a great diversity of cultures, but sometimes in the workplace cultural values can clash and this paper discusses the why and how of those issues.
When the word diversity is mentioned, what comes to mind is the ‘obvious’ differences between people, such as race, culture, gender. The true and broader viewpoint would be - "diversity" is used broadly to refer to many demographic variables, including, but not limited to, race, religion, color, gender, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, age, education, geographic origin, and skill characteristics. America's diversity has given this country its unique strength, resilience and richness. This is stated on a page of the U.S Department of the Interior. America has acknowledged that its diversity has much contributed to its relentless success.
Growing up as a child, I was always fearful of what other thought and considered of me. This fear brought forth self-esteem difficulties throughout my school as well as I entered college. Unfortunately, my fears restricted me from forming friendships, and even to the point of preventing me from developing as an employee. This fear that crippled me from within was the main source of what caused me to holdback in life rather than exposing to the world the true individual I actually was.
1. In addition to your personal desire to help people, why have you chosen social work as a profession over another profession or major? I have always have had a strong passion for helping people, especially children. I grew up poorer than poor, never dreaming I could do much of anything about the social issues I saw in the world. My top priority was just surviving which, honestly, didn’t allow much energy for planning a successful future. Growing up in and out of the foster care system, I developed a negative perspective on social workers. However, with the support of my husband, and the knowledge I gained while earning my Associate’s degree, I have discovered how my life experiences are exactly why I should become a social worker. With the encouragement and support of my husband, I began my studies at Portland Community College. where I fell in love with Criminal Justice; I completed my Associate’s degree in this field. My goal at the time was to work in probation and parole, but with each assignment that goal began to shift. One notable assignment was to build a new prison system to help lower recidivism rates. The object of this paper was to consider the one-stop shop between prison and a halfway house; a baby-steps approach for helping people re-enter society. My proposal, however, wasn 't to get “tougher” on crime, but rather to fix the source of what was broken. When the instructor read my proposal, he prompted me to consider social work. I researched the Portland
Diversity has been one of the top issues in today’s organization or establishment. At the workplace diversity means creating an environment that all employees feel included. It doesn’t matter of their gender, age, race, work experience, or sexual orientation. The Workplace should acknowledge and recognize other races and other cultures and recognize the fact there are many ways of viewing the world. Workplace diversity is what others bring into the actual workplace if you notice it brings different opinions and interaction from different backgrounds into the workplace. It opens up others points of perceptions on how things are viewed.
It is a known fact that in order for companies to flourish, excellent leadership practices and employees go hand-in-hand. What most companies have failed to acknowledge is how diversity within the workplace, especially in management and executive leadership, does not have a very strong presence. Numerous executives have embraced the fact that their hiring practices are inconsistent with their new motto (we do not discriminate…), but fail to realize that it is more of an internal issue than it is external. The government has tried to regulate some of the practices of hiring and firing applicants. The Americans with Disabilities Act includes protection from discrimination based on a disability as well as requirements for employers and those offering other public facilities regarding access and accommodations for disabled employees, vendors, and patrons (Canas and Sondak, pg. 33). The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (est. 1965) states that is it is an enforcing federal law that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of the person’s race, color, religion, sex [including pregnancy], national origin, age [40 or older],disability or genetic information (Canas and Sondak, pg. 187). Though these laws to the have been implemented for the development of a company and provides an equal opportunity for many applicants, they fail to provide the structure to educate senior executives in these specific challenges being faced today. These
America is a salad bowl, and in the salad bowl concept every fruit or vegetable holds its identity. The United States is built on the shoulders of men and women of every race, creed and color. Therefore businesses should represent and look like society. Unfortunately organizations do not see the need for diversity; hence, no systems are put into place to harbor its rich culture. Diversity “refers to the variation in the important human characteristic that distinguish people from one another.” (Lawrence & Weber, p. 379) Many leaders publicly announce that their organizations are not diverse enough because when people think about diversity, race and color are at its center. Nevertheless, diversity is made up of primary and secondary dimension,
Workplace diversity refers to the variety of differences between people in an organization. Diversity encompasses race, gender, ethnic group, age, personality, education, back ground, cognitive style and much more. As the work places are becoming more multicultural and diverse, there is an increased need in understanding the dimensions of diversity and cultural differences that affects the business communication within organizations. A better understanding of these differences is not only important to effectively bridge such gaps but also helpful in identifying the unique strengths and perspectives, each diverse group brings, that an organization can benefit from.
Thomas (1992) entails the diversity at workplace in terms of all ancestry, ethnicity, age, gender, race, educational background, sexual orientation, marital status, religious belief, income, geographic location and work experience. The mobility in human resource trend is emerging within the competitive market that requires more strategic role on account of human resource management. Organizations may fall in dire consequences of outplaying by other competitors in strategic employment. Nowadays, workforce is no longer a set of employees (Narasimhan, 2004). It is composed of workforce constituting employees that work for operating remotely, compensated hourly or might be actually working for some external firm. The ethnic minorities in the
Multicultural Issues: There are many multicultural difference between and Diana and myself such as ethnicity, culture, gender, and even age that will have an effect on the quality of relationship between her (client) and myself (social worker). First, culture and ethnicity are important factors that influence people. It is very important that I develop cultural competence to communicate effetely and appropriate with people from other cultures because there are many things that might be completely acceptable in one culture, but it might offensive in another one. For example, I am Hispanic and it is very normal in my culture to hug and kiss another person on the chick, but in some culture that might be crossing the boundaries. It is essential to learn and get familiar with as many different cultures and ethnic groups as possible to provide culture competence services.
