Diversity and Unity in Literature As unbelievable and improbable as it sounds, people have evolved from single celled organisms that existed millions of years ago, to the complex humans they are today. As a result, humans are in fact related to other organisms such as plants and animals, despite the diversity between them, according to the theory of evolution. Just like with living organisms, all forms literature and writing are related, as they all came from a common ancestor. A long time ago, the cavemen that once dwelled the earth, created some of the earliest forms of writing, which were paintings on cave walls.

Therefore, In the Time of the Butterflies, by Julia Alvarez, and Saturday, by Ian McEwan, do have a connection between them in terms of theme and characterization, although one is the story of revolutionary sisters in the Dominican Republic, while the other is about a self-absorbed neurosurgeon in London, two stories that are worlds apart. Family is a more than crucial part of life. Family provides support, love, comfort, and someone to share the great experiences of life. Whether family is parents and siblings, teammates, or close friends, life can never be fulfilled without those people. In both Saturday, and In the Time of the Butterflies, a common theme of the importance and happiness of family is shared. Henry Perowne, the neurosurgeon in London, describes how he has a great desire to reunite the whole family, while Dede, the remaining survivor of the four sister, makes a huge emphasis on how greatly she misses her family and wants to be with them. It is described that, “A chill goes through her, for she feels it in her bones, the future is now beginning. By the time
The summer of 2017, the Anderson County High School Band from Garnett, Kansas went on a trip to Florida. The band had to raise $1200 per person to go. We tried to fundraise as much money as possible. We did everything from raking leaves, to selling cookies. The band had not been able to do anything like this in a while. We were not going to miss out on the opportunity. Eventually the time came to head on our way.
In the Time of the Butterflies, written by Julia Alvarez, creates a fiction story about the true events of the Mirabal sisters and taking over the Dominican Republic’s government. In the Time of the Butterflies contains the classic war between passion and responsibility. Personal causes, love, a desire for revenge, determination to redress a wrong, or other emotions or drives conflict with moral duty. In In the Time of the Butterflies, many characters confront the demands of a private passion that conflicts with his or her responsibilities. Patria, the oldest Mirabal sister, struggles with her faith, and deciding whether to join the revolution with her sisters, or to follow her faith. Patria’s religion was an important aspect of her life since she was very young and throughout the course of the story, she attains and loses her faith in God.
In the book “ In the Time of the Butterflies,” the author describes the lives of four revolutionary sisters in the Dominican Republic. These sisters were Dede, Patria, Maria Teresa, and Minerva Mirabal. Minerva was the one who stood out the most to me. The passion she had and showed made her sound like a sacrificial leader. Minerva was the type to stand up for what she believed in. Rafael Trujillo was the leader of the Dominican Republic, whatever he say or want to be changed it changes. He was a brutal dictator. Minerva showed him that she is brave and strong. In the book she stated “ I was the one always standing up to him”. When she needed his help she buttered him up into making a deal with her. The Mirabal sisters will always be a

After living a difficult childhood life, Julia Alvarez wrote a book to represent and explain her strenuous childhood. Since In the Time of Butterflies was a representation of Alvarez’s life, she incorporated themes that she felt were attached to her childhood. In her life, family was a major
Julia Alvarez’s In the Time of the Butterflies, fictionalizes the real-life story of the four Mirabal sisters: Patria, Maria Teresa, Minerva, and Dedé. Dominican dictator, Trujillo, has Patria, Minerva, and Maria Teresa killed for their participation in the revolution. Though not all of the sisters gave their life, each of them sacrificed a great deal. Throughout the novel, all four sisters heard the call to motherhood. This call to motherhood is not the only call heard by the Mirabal sisters, however, along with this call to motherhood, each sister is also called to sacrifice. For each sister, this call to sacrifice is answered in a different way.
During the 1930s - 1960s in the Dominican Republic there was a dictatorship going on by Rafael Trujillo. Trujillo ran the Dominican Republic as his own personal possession. He and his friends held nearly 60 percent of the country's resources. If things didn’t go Trujillo’s way then that person who broke the law would be either prisoned or vanished. In her book, “In the Time of the Butterflies”, Julia Alvarez explores many different themes, such as Family, Courage, and Freedom. Each of the Mirabal sisters had different personalities. Patria the oldest sister was the most religious. Dedé the second eldest was the only sister who survived. Minerva the third Mirabal sister was the one who was more wrapped up in the revolution. Maria Teresa the youngest of the sisters just wanted to be like her oldest sisters. The butterfly is a symbol for the main characters, the Mirabal sisters. Butterflies are unique, they represent freedom, and they have a very short life span. The Mirabal sisters, much like the butterflies were unique, and died young. They had to sacrifice their lives in order to be free like butterflies.
Julia Alvarez’s novel In the Time of the Butterflies shows the lack of fairness in society and the importance of maintaining a strong family bond. Trujillo was not fair between men and women and granting men the rights to do whatever they want. The Mirabal sisters’ revolutionary against president Trujillo and fighting for freedom of the country and its people. In Saudi Arabia women are now granted to drive, but there some other things that men can do but women cannot. The Mirabal family has a strong maintain of a family bond. Minerva is one of the four sisters who is brave and had the courage to stand for others and started the revolution against the president.
In the Time of the Butterflies, by Julia Alvarez, takes place in the Dominican Republic during Trujillo’s control of the country. Dedé and Minerva are two extremely different Mirabal sisters, shown by how they respond to Trujillo taking over their country. Dedé and Minerva are only two of the sisters. There are four in total: Minerva, Dedé, Patria and María Teresa. The four sisters take turns throughout In the Time of the Butterflies telling their stories from the 1940s while living in the Dominican Republic. Manipulating her point of view and attitude, Julia Alvarez uses an impassioned style of writing to portray Minerva’s strong leadership and an explicit style of writing to portray Dedé’s willingness to compromise.
“Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” (Andre Gide) In the novel, In the Time of the Butterflies, written by Julia Alvarez, four sisters are led through a risk infested journey in which they must overcome hindrances with hollow consequences. This historical fiction novel takes us through a rollercoaster of events, incorporating everything from the partialities towards women, to life below the oppressive administration of the Dominican Republic’s dictator, Rafael Trujillo. Julia Alvarez’s In the Time of Butterflies is a work of historical fiction set in the Dominican Republic under the rule of powerful dictator known as Trujillo. Four sisters work together to resist a force greater than themselves to stand up for their beliefs and protect their family. Patria, Dede, Mate, and Minerva, “the butterflies”, experience the loss of their father and family members to the regime. They work together to retrieve them back or use their losses to drive them to overthrow their compelling government. Each of the sisters represent a larger theme of the novel such as religious importance, identity, or coming of age. Minerva Mirabal is driven by the need to escape the “cage” she is locked in by Trujillo. Therefore, the theme
One often dreams of making an impact on the world; however these dreams, more often than not, remain adventurous thoughts. For the Mirabal sisters, of the Dominican Republic, dreams quickly became a reality. Minerva, María Teresa, and Patria Mirabal helped to free the Dominican Republic of their oppressive leader, Rafael Trujillo. In Julia Alvarez’s novel, In the Time of the Butterflies, the inspiring and heroic story of the Mirabal sisters is told through the perspectives of the sisters. Alvarez creatively fictionalizes the early lives of the sisters and solemnly illustrates the sisters’ final days. Following the release of Julia Alvarez’s novel, many critics expressed both positive and negative reviews. Some suggested the Mirabal sisters were inaccurately portrayed; however, other critics cite strengths in the novel, and one critic reclassifies the novel’s genre.
“In the Time of the Butterflies” takes place in the Dominican Republic in the 1960s. The author, Julia Alvarez is a native of the country, but moved to the US at a young age. She first heard about the sisters roughly around 1986 and instantly felt the need to share their story with the world. In the book, Alvarez tells the story of the Mirabal sisters and their fight for freedom against the Dominican dictator Trujillo. Rafael Trujillo reigned for about 30 years until his assassination in May of 1961. Trujillo’s reign of terror began in 1930 and the violence soon followed. The self centered dictator changed the names of cities and murdered roughly about 20,000 Haitians from the neighboring country. The book not only tells the sisters’
History may define the identity of a nation, but its progress and social change makes the nation a legacy. The way society is systemized today is the result of a millennia of years of victories and failures. Social change is a blessing of humanity where the basic traits of expression, belief, greed and cruelty unite to determine the fate of society. Julia Alvarez’s In the Time of Butterflies illuminates the early to middle 20th century Dominican Republic society, where the Mirabal sisters, Dedé, Maria Teresa, Patria, and Minerva, are agitators of revolution after seeing dictator
