Diversity And Its Effect On The Surface Level

Diversity is normally thought of on the surface level. The general population usually takes into account physical/demographic characteristics as indicators of diversity. People tend to focus on aspects like gender or skin color, which limits and narrows the definition of diversity. This causes neglecting to include other external dimensions like recreational habits, educational background, etc. In the book, diversity is examined by various scholars, all of whom perceive its definition in different ways. This class has taught me that diversity is an expansive topic and our class presentations gave me the opportunity to examine a specific area of it. Both interviewers were about 22,500 income. The two interviewers really wanted to tell people that have low income does not imply laziness. Zachary Villaruz talked about two of his friends that made under 20,000. One of these interviewers wanted to explain that without money it’s hard to look for affordable alternatives for life essentials. After listening to these presentations concerning income, I now realize that the idea of financial security is only a myth. Each individual, from every income level, described feeling a lack of financial security. A person’s income level is never guaranteed. They must work hard to maintain or sustain their quality of life. It seems as education can play a key role in obtaining a higher income. The topic of education was divided into several subtopics: four year degree, doctorate, and less than high school. Betty Garcia talked to two people that had their degrees. One got their degree quick and fast while the other had kids and went to work while getting their degree. Christopher Harmening showed us the lives of two people that only have high school diplomas. Both people seem to have worked a lot of hours to maintain their living style. The interviewers said it’s really tough to find a high paying job without any higher level education. What surprised me about this presentation the interviewers wanted people to know even without a college degree you can still make a decent living. I think that is true but it always seems
