The quirky show “The Office” shadows office workers of “Dunder-Mifflin Paper Company”, a fictional paper distributor in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Occasional one v. one discussions with the employee's, “raw” footage, and many humorously bizarre yet relatable plots that have made this series enormously popular. The show portrays some of life’s most awkward situations and not only does it make the audience laugh, but also delivers small dosages of life lessons.
Michael Scott (the manager) is often is the creator of the crude/ignorant remarks.
He tends to treat minorities with disrespect by insulting them with stereotypical remarks against their ethnicity and also degrades and talks to the female employees as if they are sex objects and makes them feel lesser than men. (not intentionally)

In season one, an episode called “Diversity Day.” Michael creates a very bold and in plain view image that blatantly throws shade towards societies and the harsh way it
procedures and day to day operations and shows no respect for his subordinates. His leadership style and how to properly communicate with his staff.
It becomes undeniably clear that he was socially inept as a child, resulting in his inadequate interpersonal skills (Devito 160). He had no friends, lived in the same small town his entire life, and only interacted with his mother, who was always preoccupied with a new relationship. Because of this his world was molded by television and movies, which rely heavily on stock characters that reinforce stereotypes. He was doomed from the start. Leading to his first downfall, racism. The word racism has such a malicious connotation (rightfully so) (Devito 98), and none of the remarks made by Michael are meant malevolently. He does nonetheless, use racist language (Devito 107). It should be pointed out however, that it is never used as a power move, contrary to its definition. Michael doesn’t fault his employees for their race, Rather, he simply makes them aware, in variably unpleasant and not so indirect ways, of their implied
The Office is an NBC produced show that provided comedy on Thursday nights for eight years. The Office is all about the employees of Dunder Mifflin who live in Scranton Pennsylvania (the electric city). The documentary style show films the employees working at the paper as well as filming their personal lives. An average episode of The Office is typically thirty minutes long. But the series had a few hour long episodes, depending on if it was the beginning of the season, or the end. The series finale is one of the few episodes that was an hour long. Without it, it would be impossible to receive and interpret messages.
Situational comedies draw connections between the realm of television life and reality. These shows are successful due to the realistic scenarios and mishaps that shape the lives of each individual character. The Office is a “mockumentary”, or parody documentary, that follows a small paper company in Scranton, Pennsylvania that is led by narcissistic boss, Michael Scott (Steve Carrell). Episode 12 of season 2, “The Injury” is a summary of the overall show, as it exhibits Michael’s desire to feel wanted and Dwight Schrute’s (Rainn Wilson) longing for his superior’s approval. Throughout the entirety of the show’s nine seasons, Michael continues to go to outlandish lengths for public approval, and Dwight continues to do equally embarrassing things
Women have had a rough way to go for many years when it comes to equality. They face many negative things in today’s society and that is the way it has been for many years. History shows that women have been fighting for equality for decades, because many people believe they just can’t do the things that men can. There’s a website that has been helping women fight for that equality since 1966. That website is www.now.org. Before then women never really had any help. They had to rely on each other to show everyone what they could really do. Women have fought to try and end discrimination when it comes to jobs and economic justice. So the status of women throughout history has changed,
What I found interesting in this chapter would have to be about Diversity “The New Social Norm " in the chapter it talks about the different cultural backgrounds, opportunity changes, peoples beliefs, and religion. I find this interesting because without social norms there would be chaos in the world. In today's era society is built upon the thought of citizen conformity to a prescribed set of values and norms. In the chapter, it states “The United States is a multicultural society. This is unlike a monocultural society in which everyone looks and acts alike and believes pretty much the same thing. Diversity brings with it both opportunities and challenges; it brings opportunities for people to find commonalities and share unique beliefs and
The average person spends over ninety thousand hours of their life at work, yet millions of people still watch a television show about an office after working their own nine-to-five shifts. Workplace sitcoms, such as The Office, have gained exceeding popularity over the past few years, but the irony is that the viewer’s “escape from reality” leads them right back to their own cubicle. So what would intrigue the audience to fictional paper companies? Audiences are able to relate to the show which is perhaps the foremost reason for The Office being first created in the United Kingdom. Soon after, American producers saw the potential of the show to be a success overseas, so they modified the BBC program for American culture. The American remake of The Office has many similarities and differences with its British counterpart such as archetypal characters and individual storylines; however, the two sitcoms exemplify the differing business cultures, diversity gaps, and the overall national identities of the U.K and the U.S.
Michael’s unconscious racism and tactless behaviors can be seen throughout the episodes of each season. An example of this would be in Season 1 Episode 5 titled “Basketball”. In this episode, Michael and his “dream team” will play against Darryl and the warehouse workers to see who will come into work on the upcoming Saturday over a pick up
The next segment during Diversity Day would have counselors running groups in order to educate students to stand up for others and also hear first-hand stories from other students that have been treated differently for being different. Counselors will facilitate students in discussing past stories of witnessing or receiving discrimination and have the students discuss what they have heard. For students that have witnessed these acts, they can discuss how they felt when they decided to stop the act of discrimination. Additionally, they can also discuss with the student how they felt when they decided to not stop the act of discrimination. For the students that have suffered from acts of discrimination they can explain how they felt when someone stepped in to help them. Additionally, students can explain how it felt when no one stepped in and just watched as they suffered from discrimination. The purpose of this activity is to educate the students on how the victims feel when someone helps them compared to someone who does not. Additionally, it will educate students on how people felt when they helped someone in need compared to someone who watched the incident without intervening.

1. When I first heard about this conference last year in the diversity club event, I thought of it as essentially a vacation in Atlanta. It sounded fun, but I wasn’t particularly interested in it. Still, I thought it might be worth checking out, so I decided to look online to see what its website said. What I found painted a picture very different from my first impression. It gave the impression of a legitimately powerful learning experience, which coupled with Ainsley’s testimony began to sound extremely worthwhile. I like to think of myself as a fairly culturally sensitive person, but I began to realize how little diversity I’ve been exposed to, growing up in New England. How much could I really understand cultures I had never even come
You made some very valid point in your discussion. This country was founded on social and economic diversity in which it does tend to categorize everyone into a certain group to feel a sense of validation of whom they believe they are or should be. European Americans did this categorization as a means to ensure that society will embrace them as the superior race and blacks and Indians as the inferior race. This segregation of humanity was denoted as “high” and “lower” class groups that became interconnected within the social and racial institution. Additionally, these distinctions such as skin color differences in America today are thought to explain perceived differences in intellectual, physical and artistic temperaments and to justify the
As the famous Michael Scott, who tries to solve problems, but eventually ends up making them ten times worse as they were to begin with, undergoes a Chris rock routine and has an African American male coincidently named Mr. Black come and try to teach about diversity. This doesn’t work out of course, because Michael thinks he knows more about it thaen Mr. Black, so Michael decides to take it upon himself. To try and show everyone about diversity, he does this activity
Australia right now has a population of 24.4 million people and it is expected to grow to 36 million in about 34 years’ time. Australia’s population will continue to increase by 50%-100% by 2050, right now about 30% of Australia’s population are born overseas and the vast majority will go to Victoria. There is not an accurate estimation about what the percentage of Australia’s population will be born overseas in the future as it could be decided depending of their government. Now let’s talk about Australia’s urbanisation rates for the future. Right now Australia is sitting on 85% of people living near the coast(urbanisation), when it is 2050, the urbanisation rates will be 90%-95%.
