For one film to be more evolved than the other the relevant science fiction themes used overall by that film would have to be superior to that of the other. I will prove in this essay that District was the more evolved science fiction film compared to Avatar by looking at the science fiction themes incorporated in each movie and comparing and analyzing the extent to which the mise en scene depicted these themes.
The theme of dystopia is a common theme used in science fiction and District 9 makes great use of Dystopia using many elements such as desaturated colour which creates a gloomy atmosphere to explore current social issues. They effectively create a striking paradise and use panning and tracking to establish this other worldly setting. There are a lot of close ups of Neytiri in the film and she is depicted as a scenic creature and we connect easily with the Na’vi people. Avatar also depicts the theme of the other by using the contrast of the utopia in Pandora with the hard and dislikable military base that is run by the humans. They by doing this also show through the underlying theme of mass profit hungry organizations destroying and taking what is not theirs. There is no set underlying themes such as the “other” or large multinational organizations but does touch on issue of the power of the government. The close ups in the movie allow you to connect with the characters and their emotions as well as the light hearted comedic dialogue. There is also low key lighting after they leave earth which sets an ominous atmosphere and good visual effects use for the time the film was created. These things all add to the science fiction/action and almost dystopian theme portrayed in the
