For one film to be more evolved than the other the relevant science fiction themes used overall by that film would have to be superior to that of the other. I will prove in this essay that District was the more evolved science fiction film compared to Avatar by looking at the science fiction themes incorporated in each movie and comparing and analyzing the extent to which the mise en scene depicted these themes.
The theme of dystopia is a common theme used in science fiction and District 9 makes great use of Dystopia using many elements such as desaturated colour which creates a gloomy atmosphere to explore current social issues. The film uses dystopia to then highlight the problems of xenophobia, discrimination, segregation and poverty which

They effectively create a striking paradise and use panning and tracking to establish this other worldly setting. There are a lot of close ups of Neytiri in the film and she is depicted as a scenic creature and we connect easily with the Na’vi people. Avatar also depicts the theme of the other by using the contrast of the utopia in Pandora with the hard and dislikable military base that is run by the humans. They by doing this also show through the underlying theme of mass profit hungry organizations destroying and taking what is not theirs. There is a lot of sensationalism and fantasy and this takes away from the science fiction theme and the message is almost not as clear as in district …show more content…
There is no set underlying themes such as the “other” or large multinational organizations but does touch on issue of the power of the government. The close ups in the movie allow you to connect with the characters and their emotions as well as the light hearted comedic dialogue. There is also low key lighting after they leave earth which sets an ominous atmosphere and good visual effects use for the time the film was created. These things all add to the science fiction/action and almost dystopian theme portrayed in the
There are couple different themes that are appearing throughout the movie. One of the themes is definatelly politician and government corruption. We can also notice that Jeff Smith is alone and that he is fighting against everyone else in order to achieve his goals and put his plans to realization. Besides corruption in politics, there is also a theme of media control from above that is well presented in this movie. It is also worth of mentioning that media is controling what kind of opinions will society have about politics and politicians in general. Since politicians
Dystopia is common theme which dates hundreds of years in literature worldwide. Dystopian novels and short stories often depict a society repressed by a totalitarian government which comes to power after a cataclysmic occurrence, wielding unforgiving power and control over inhabitants for their own good. These dystopias are often perceived by the average citizen as a normal or unavoidable way of life, sometimes even a better way of life, yet there is often a single person or group of protagonists who question the justification of such living arrangements and threaten upheaval of the utopia sold by the ruling class.
2) What are some of the themes that are central to the film? How have they been communicated?
Exactly what is a dystopia? They are worlds of sameness, government control, and are full of dehumanized people. A few examples are The Hunger Games, The Matrix, and Divergent. Another important piece of literature that contains a dystopian society is Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. It takes place in a world where firemen burn books instead of putting fires out. Guy Montag is a fireman who begins to question his job after years of burning down houses. Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopian story that contains the dystopian characteristics listed above, but the obvious dystopian qualities are not the only disturbing quality about this novel. Instead, it is the connections and similarities it has to our current society that have managed to captivate many
The theme in the short story is that men will become tools of their tools, inside on their own free will; but because of the the change in how walking is legal to illegal in the film, causes the theme to become how people are controlled using their TV’s, and don’t have a choice on whether they want to go outside. This change makes the film seem more like in the future the government keeps them inside and uses their TV’s to brainwash them. This new theme gives the film a more sci fi twilight zone type of feel and I prefer it to the book which is more
The key themes and ideas are Industrialization, Imperialism and science vs. Religion. Industrialization means using off weapons or machines. This is shown in the Novel by H.G. Wells that the Martians are killing the human race by using off their machines and weapons. Imperialism means that creating an empire like United Kingdom just is. This is shown in the Novel by H.G. Wells that the Martians are trying to create their own empire by starting off with the great city London. Science vs. Religion had
Dystopian societies, as described in novels and movies, fascinates all audiences from young to old because they can relate in someway to the portrayed unfortunate circumstances. For instance, the novel 1984 and the movie Divergent, intrigue the imagination for most readers because they can actually sense an overpowering government in their own life. Both of the stories are an extreme of what most people would say is taking place in reality today; however, their story still resonates in the minds of many as it expresses a common theme. Both 1984 and Divergent have a similar theme of a controlling government system that oppresses their citizens.
A dystopian society, usually illusory, is the reverse of an idyllic utopia: it is generally tyrannical and inhibited. Dystopian societies mirror our future- they are usually a hyperbolic familiar society with satirical exaggeration. This kind of literature is written to amend other people 's idea of the kind of society they should thrive for. As well as that, they are written to express their concerns about the future and humanity. Societies of this nature appear in many works of fiction, predominantly in novels set in a speculative future. Dystopian culture is often mused by societal collapse, dehumanization, poverty, and deprivation.
There were many issues and concepts that were arisen with this film. What seemed to be the major theme that predominated throughout the film was that being older does not mean that life ends. There are different issues that are dealt with when aging, but
humanity due to factors such as war, famine and poverty criticize current global issues while also
In addition, the film focus mainly on a human protagonist name Jake, and narrate his transformation from a human to an alien, which is done through a human-developed technology that injects human DNA into the alien bodies. After Jake’s transformation, the scene opens another implicit message: aliens are to be forcibly removed from their planet to create space for human activity (Veracini, 2011, p. 357). For the climax part of the film, the director establishes a passage that describes Jack becoming a native of Pandora, and the director again aims to introduce the audience with a message saying that human power against corporate force as to conserve our natural environment. This message seemingly gives audience a wonderful twist of the plot and is quite thought provoking for the audience. Hence, when a film includes well-integrated messages, it adds another layer of quality to the entire plot whereby all the elements of the plot becomes more meaningful, and the general audience could be attuned with the rhythm of the film because there is a logical flow from one scene to the next.
This film has a theme of peace and conflict opposing with each other. The theme of "Do The Right Thing" is that everyone has a compelling standpoint, but not a lot of are willing to compromise due to stereotyping of races. The film does not have a definite plot, however it easily flows from character to character and gradually chronicling the course of their day. It is shown through various point of
The first theme that will discuss is humanity. The whole plot of the movie focuses on preserving humanity or what's left of it. After global warming had destroyed the earth and making unsuitable for any living creature to survive the Conductor train made that makes an around trip cross the earth to try to preserve humanity. Even though he was ridiculed about his theories and his plan to save humanity he still went ahead with plans and end up saving what was left of humanity. Throughout the movie, many of the characters' humanity was tested. Even though the Conductor saved humanity he sectioned off the train by class. The lower class was placed in the last cart of the train. They were treated horribly and were supplied with the basic necessity of living. Since the lower class did not have the basic necessity of living their humanity was questioned every day. Later in the film the protagonist in the
The First Grader is a British film that takes place in a mountain village of Kenya. After Kenya received its independence, citizens were promised a free education. With the hopes of learning to read, Maruge, an 84-year-old man, seeks to cash in on this benefit. During the film, one can recognize some similarities and differences to our culture. Kenya culture, like American, has a tendency to disrespect its elders. Additionally, education is held in high value. Finally, Kenyan conditions highly contrast that of America.
