<br>A [kingdom] without order is a [kingdom] in chaos (Bartelby.com). In Shakespeare's tragic play, King Lear, the audience witnesses to the devastation of a great kingdom. Disorder engulfs the land once Lear transfers his power to his daughters, but as the great American writer, A.C. Bradley said, "The ultimate power in the tragic world is a moral order" (Shakespearean Tragedy). By examining the concept of order versus disorder in the setting, plot, and the character King Lear, Bradley's idea of moral order is clearly demonstrated by the outcome of the play.

Despite the fact that immorality and disorder are quite dominant throughout the play, when nearing the denouement, moral order seems to be restored.

<br>Although the plot shows how order is disrupted and then restored, it is the characters that better personify Bradley's idea of moral order. The main character, Lear best exemplifies this idea. As the play proceeds, Regan and Goneril rise in status in the Kingdom, while Lear's presence and authority as King becomes insignificant. This is an indication that order is disrupted because, traditionally the oldest person in the family is in control. Only when the King dies do his children take over his throne. Lear's insignificance is shown in a conversation with Oswald, a servant to Goneril.

<br>Lear is greatly insulted by that comment, as he is the King of England, not just his daughter's father. Oswald's comment suggests that Goneril has a higher rank than Lear. In this soliloquy, the audience gets its first glimpse of the character of Goneril. The full spectrum of her greed and selfishness will not be revealed until later, but this is certainly a good sample of her personality. Her profession of love is so large that it seems almost artificial, and it also seems motivated by the fact that possession of land is involved. Shakespeare's King Lear is a play which shows the consequences of one man's decisions. The audience follows the main character, Lear, as he makes decisions that disrupt order in his Kingdom. When Lear surrenders all his power and land to his daughters as a reward for their demonstration of love towards him, the breakdown on order in evident. Justice, the one essential key to being able to reside in an ordered and supportive world. Justice shown in the play King Lear prove how certain actions can never be taken without repercussions to follow. With justice occurring in the world, people's being identity changes. Attempting to improve oneself from what one's birth order denotes you to be will always cause you to be brought down to one's rightful place through justice. Although mercy plays an important role in the order of a society, justice is the one main fundamental requirement needed between the two in order to live in a favourable world.
The remainders of Act I and Act II in Eyre’s film focus on the conflict between Lear and his two daughters, Goneril and Regan. Goneril and Regan begin looking down on their father and take away more of his privileges every chance that they get. They reduce Lear’s hundred knights down to fifty. Goneril and Regan’s tone of voice when arguing with Lear about reducing his number of knights down is vehement. Goneril complains about how the palace seems more like a tavern because of Lear’s knights’ demeanor, her voice quivers slightly, making it seem like she doesn’t want to have to argue with her father, in the play this change of tone is absent. This suggests that although Goneril cares more about the way others see her and material objects than the safety of her father. Both Shakespeare and Eyre emphasize the consequences of Lear’s choice to give up his power and give it to his two eldest daughters, Regan and Goneril.

It might be useful to view nature as `the natural order of the world' (and, perhaps, the universe). When one goes against the natural order, chaos will follow. Shakespeare has made this point clear in "Troilus and Cressida" where Ulysses predicts that once "the specialty of rule hath been neglected disaster will follow, for take but degree away, untune that string, and hark what discord follows" (I.iii). At the beginning of the play King Lear has more power than anyone else, the feeling of power made him think it was okay to ask his three daughters who loved him the most. When his youngest and favourite daughter Cordelia did not give him the answer he wanted by saying, “Unhappy that I am, I cannot heave / My heart into my mouth/ I love your majesty / According to my bond, no more nor less” (King Lear 1.1.91-93). he started lashing out. Lear clearly values Goneril and Regan fawning over him over Cordelia’s sincere honesty. Out of pride and anger, Lear banishes Cordelia, as well as Kent for defending her. Throughout the play he becomes increasingly shocked when people do not obey him the way they did before and the lack of respect he receives. With his loss of power Lear often responds to these problems with anger saying things like “My curses on her!” (2.4.138). about his own daughter. By the end of the play he recognizes that he takes responsibility for both his own problems and for those of others. King Lear’s actions were the first step to the plays tragic outcome.
In Shakespeare's famous tragedy King Lear, the parallel between natural and unnatural occurrences unifies the plot while further developing and foreshadowing the conflicts in the play. Lear's resignation from the throne and his method of distributing the land, as well as the unnaturalness of Gloucester's and Edmund's situation, brings turmoil and tragedy to a society based on natural order. From the physical works of nature such as the storm in the third act to the variety of unnatural politics, it all comes together to cause ultimate chaos in the kingdom.
In King Lear two of the older characters, King Lear and Gloucester, fight with their own sanity not only in the eyes of their hateful children but also from their own view. Lear says this very early on in the play in regards to his sanity “Oh, dear god, don’t let me go mad.” Even very early on in the play Lear foreshadows and maybe even feels his sanity starting to weaken. While Lear and Gloucester deal with issues with sanity their children are taking every vital power position not only in Britain but also in France. Goneril states this in regards to Lear’s credibility “Just because a senile man with poor judgment calls something an insult doesn’t necessarily mean it is one.” Goneril is trying to discredit her father and also gain dominance over him in one statement. To conclude, “King Lear” portrays power as the ability to manipulate and control whatever one desires; power corrupts Gonerill, Regan and Edmund. When one has all the power he desires, deceit is usually the path he takes. Lear appears as an actor with no role to play and realizes this in scene 4, when he cries “why, this is not Lear” and later says “who is it that can tell me who I am?”. William Shakespeare’s King Lear is massive in scope and deals with many themes. I’d like to focus on King Lear’s relationship with his daughters as it evolves throughout the play as well as the play King Lear’s themes regarding politics and politicking. The passage I think best represents the conclusion of these themes is King Lear’s conversation with Cordelia in Act 5, scene 3 where they have been taken prisoner by the English. My conclusion from reading this passage closely is that in Shakespeare’s King Lear, King Lear’s speech to Cordelia regarding their impending imprisonment builds Shakespeare’s idea of caged potential and judgement for those who politic.
