With today's Air Force ever changing the demand for flexible and adaptive leadership is crucial for success. Whether you're in a training environment, home station or deployed it is import to remain flexible and embrace the process. An Adaptable leader is broken down into three elements: Cognitive Flexibility, Dispositional Flexibility, and Emotional Flexibility. Course 15 states "You must exhibit at least two of the three characteristics to reach an effective level of adaptability ". It is key to not only comprehend the methods, but properly apply them to be more prepared for what the Air Force throws at you. Throughout my military career, the need for flexibility was present. From having missions change at a moment's notice to extra …show more content…
The ability to be an adaptive leader and to utilize and apply changes while keeping a positive attitude is a must. I will display cognitive flexibility by using strategic thinking having multiple plans to cover any unexpected factors along the along the way. By doing this my supervisors and peers will have faith in my decision making, while I keep my subordinates on the right track to complete the mission. I will practice dispositional flexibility by remaining optimistic at all times, encouraging my subordinates along the way, expressing the importance of the task and inspiring everyone to remain motivated. This in return will motivate my peers and supervisors, giving them a piece of mind during stressful or unpredictable situations. Lastly, I will utilize emotional flexibility, to not only manage my own emotions but the emotions of others. This can require me to take different approaches to individuals on my team due to multiple personalities. If my subordinates remain emotionally stable my peers will feel more comfortable working alongside me and my team, thus allowing the leaders to have complete faith we can complete any task while keeping our emotions under control. By remaining an adaptable and flexible leader the insight I will have on my leadership, peers, and Airmen is abundant. My subordinates will want to follow me because I can adapt, my peers will want to work with me because I don't let stress affect my work and my supervisors will entrust me more complex and important task to complete. Overall making the unit more effective.
The ability to be an adaptable and flexible leader is a needed every day in the work center. Every day, every situation and every Airman are different, your adaptability is crucial for success. Adrian McGinn stated, "The magic in leadership is the ability to bring clarity of direction but embedding openness and
There are many different types of leadership styles that are tailored to a firm's goals and resources and the leader must be able to determine which is best. Leadership can make or break an operation as is sets the operational structure and the amount of power each individual has. No matter what a manager must be able to effectively lead a team. They need to be able to motivate individuals and keep them on task so they may reach their goal within a timely manner. Without leadership an operation can fall to pieces if employees lack direction, are unaware of the goal, or lack the passion to execute their task properly.
Abbie Wood – P2: The roles of a team leader in the public services. What is the role of a team leader? The role of a team leader is to make sure that his/her team knows what they are doing and that they are going in the right direction, they should keep everything in order, resolve or overcome their own conflicts, manage or coordinate tasks – so to find out what tasks need to be completed and set them for different team members, show their knowledge or initiative, give orders and punishments, give demands, have authority or power over the team, prevent/avoid anarchy (chaos), boost reflection – this is something that you do, you look at yourself and think about the good and the bad things you have done and how you can improve them, act as
An Army Leader is able and willing to act decisively, within the intent and purpose of his superior leaders, and in the best interest of the organization. Army leaders recognize that organizations built on mutual trust and confidence, successfully accomplish peacetime and wartime missions.” (2006, P. Viii). Balance molds a leader and in turn, an effective leader is a proactive person who works a whole lot smarter. President George Bush (1997) states, “Leadership to me means duty, honor, and country; It means character and it means listening from time to time.” (Adrain, p. 35).
The key quality needed for flexible leadership is humility. The freedom needed to serve and empower others stems from a personal confidence of our identity in Christ; a product of self-awareness and management (C. Hayes, personal communication, April 11, 2018). The cultivate of these leadership competencies depends upon honest assessment of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Therefore, a flexible environment will depend on faithful accountability both personally and organizationally, strong coaching and mentoring relationships, as well as a continued commitment to personal learning (Wilson,
Leadership development in the military is critical to its mission and objectives. Understanding and embracing leadership will foster an agile culture and facilitate attainment of strategic goals. People desire quality leadership to assist with achieving their goals, albeit personal or professional development. Having a clear vision and the motivation to perform at high-levels influences others to work synergistically together to achieve organizational goals. Insomuch, employees value being treated respectfully, fairly, and ethically. Leaders serve people best when they help them develop their own initiative and good judgment, enable them to grow, and help them become better contributors.
“At times of change or dealing with uncertainty or in a crisis-- that is when the best leader will shine” (Ellis, 2016). A leader who can work effectively in a complicated, unpredictable situation is a competent leader and he tirelessly works to improve his capabilities (Ledlow & Coppola, 2010). All great leaders are known for communicating effectively what they want to achieve. They are visionaries who have the ability to lead others toward a shared goal (Gibson & Weber, 2015).
The modern Army is to become more adaptive and resilient in different situations. I believe leadership is very important because it can influence others. When we talk about influencing others, we are making changes. Many Soldiers do not like changes because they prefer to remain in their comfort zone, and changes in routines are often uncomfortable for the Soldiers. What can we do to adapt to a new environment?
(2016). p.33). There are many traits that a leader must have to be able to be successful. Three that come to mind are trustworthy or honest, motivated, and knowledgeable. Ever leader needs to be honest and have the trust of those who are following them. This is essential for any plan or idea to be carried out steadily. Also, open communication cannot happen if one does not trust their leader. Next, a leader must be motivated and have energy. If a leader is not motivated, those who are following them are also not going to be motivated either. Someone has to be able to push others to keep up the hard work to get to where they need to be. Lastly, a leader needs to be knowledgeable. At work, often when faced with something that I do not know the answer to, I go to my charge nurse who is very knowledgeable on almost all situations that may arise. If lacking any vital knowledge, staff under that leader will not have anyone to go to in times of need. This leads to the follower being lost and not knowing what the next step is in their situation. All of these traits are what I like to see in a leader in my work
As discussed by Military Times (2013), the constantly assess the following traits by continually knowing myself and seeking self-improvement every chance I get, along with being technically proficient in my duties while seeking responsibility and taking responsibility for my actions. I diligently work to make sound and timely decisions while setting the example for others to emulate. I closely monitor my personnel and look out for their well-being, while keeping them informed at all times. I always develop a sense a responsibility in my followers, ensuring each task is understood, supervised, and accomplished. I regularly find new and improved ways to build teams while employing them in accordance with their capabilities.
Specific knowledge and skills I will gain and use include flexibility and adaptability in changing my leadership style as appropriate. This will require an attitude of humility. I have been in the workforce for decades and have become complacent with many of my leadership habits. I want to create new habits such as socialized charismatic leadership skills. This includes developing autonomous, responsible employees who feel ownership of our team’s goals. I want to openly communicate my values, listen, and consistently generate
Leaders are look upon as role models as they guide us with their motivating, influence to accomplish tasks. There are a lot of leadership styles; when leading, it is based on the situation. When I was in the military, I encountered with many different styles of leadership. A leadership that I considered meaningful is a Transformational Leader. The transformational Leader in the military with their inspiring charisma of motivating, influence creates a visualized path that produces energetic characteristics that inhere to new changes, developments, and possibilities.; by demonstrating authority, the Transformational Leader in the military utilizes their power to inspire and motivate people into trusting and following their example; this as
Being a flexible leader in my opinion is essential in achieving the organizations goals, as it gives both the leader and those being led the opportunity to make use of their capabilities to their full potential. I believe that being flexible gives those that are being led room for solving problems in a fashion that is not rigid and constraining. Flexibility gives those being led a boost of motivation and morale. In a rigid environment, individuals tend to be frustrated resulting in people performing below standard. However, the leader needs to be in a position to identify how flexible she can be:
Beginning in boot camp and continuing throughout my career, I’ve seen the Coast Guard promote the leadership model to be: “You” influencing “Others” to achieve a “Goal”. With all the different ways leadership can be defined, this simplistic model which has been permanently engrained in my thinking definition still rings true for me. As such, when defining my own personal definition of leadership, I align it to this same model. More specifically, while I support the fact that leadership involves influencing others to achieve a common end I propose that is not the whole story. Leaders must not be stagnant in their vision and must lend themselves to the possibility they may have to adjust their leadership styles depending on the goal. The best leaders are the ones that understand their own personality traits as well as those traits of the people they are trying to lead.
A leader is cultivated and groomed to make the best potential shine through the grimmest picture with decisiveness. A committed leader will prioritize essential needs and wants, allowing focused results to steer the mission. A leader embodies the Air Force in every aspect and relays those traits to subordinates through tough love and determination. A firm hold on the task at hand can make or break the efforts put forth to complete it.
The first-hand experience I have attained from guiding has taught me plenty about the qualities a competent leader must possess. Great leaders often share the trait of being flexible to better suit the needs of the group as a whole. When I used to guide day trips there were many times where I had to be flexible in order to suit the needs and desires of my clients; a particular time that comes to mind is when I took a group of elderly people out on the Matanuska Glacier. When I met with my group I began to assess their ability levels and planned out there hike accordingly, I
