Reflections on Class Discussions Reflecting back on previous class discussions has brought my focus on the effect that Disney World has contributed to the homelessness. The world is one great big fantasy once you enter into the Magic Kingdom. Everyone is happy and there are smiles, dancing and laughter in all directions. Perhaps we should look on the outside of the Magic Kingdom where the world and the people are real; real just like you and me. The discussions were quite interesting as we shared the misconceptions many had on how Disney World would bring major changes to the economy. There would be jobs, jobs, jobs. However, to our realization those hopes and dreams were quickly diminished and people were coming to recognize that the stars they were seeing were just magical that quickly disappeared. What was to be the happiest place on earth was slowing becoming a drawing card for the people hoping to make a new start in their lives. A place where jobs would be available and their families could have a better upgraded standard of living. But it seems that everyone in the class agreed that this did not happen. We all agreed that many obstacles …show more content…
Homelessness in the beautiful city of St. Petersburg, FL has become a problem. Our city shares the same concerns about what to do about the homeless situation. No one wants to see it but everyone wants something done to eliminate the situation. Homeless people in Florida share the same problems as those in other states. No housing for the poor or homeless, kids being shuffled from motel to motel trying to survive and having the fear of being separated from their parents. This life for children is not the American life for our children who whole the future in their hands. It is hard to look into the eyes of our future when we cannot guarantee them where their next meal will come from or if they will be fortunate at all to receive one on any particular
California streets are overwhelmed day-to-day by the homeless population, yet city and county services are limited and the issue continues on. To address the problem of homelessness in California, city and county leaders have collaborated and proposed future plans across the region. The city council recently approved a plan that involves the creation of services and programs to those who are homeless, but realizes the budget for funding these plans are not available at hand. The effort to solve the homelessness problem is not within the plans of strategies; however funding these strategies is the solution to making these plans a reality. Focusing on the issue, the city and county leaders have different roles that each are responsible for and the funds needed for these plans exceeds over $1.85 billion over the next ten years and currently about $30 million is already spent on strategies to reduce the homeless population.
When driving through Pasco, it will not take long before the homeless can be spotted all around. They can be found asking for money on main roads, seeking shelter under abandoned buildings, and wherever they can find a place to rest. Homelessness is continually becoming more noticeable and prevalent in the county , and it has become a growing problem for years. According to TBO.com, Pasco has the second highest rate of homelessness in the entire state of Florida.() This includes at least almost 4,500 men women and children and an additional 3,000 men and children.() Such a concentration of homeless individuals in one county is quite astonishing. Since homelessness is such a widespread epidemic in Pasco, raising money to support homeless organizations and using foreclosed houses to shelter the homeless could help lower the homeless rate.
Homelessness impact hundreds of residents in Miami-Dade County on a daily basis. It presents a huge demand on social services, and provides health care burdens and policy dilemmas on the community. Poverty, the economy, and not having access to safe and affordable housing has also increased the homeless population in Miami city. According to Rukmana, (2010) “49% percent of homeless people in Miami are males that range from the ages of
Homelessness is an issue in American society today that affects anywhere from 800,000 to 3.5 million people. There are a substantial amount of people that are without shelter, food, or employment, and there are numerous other people affected by poverty and homelessness. People living in nearly every city in the United States are affected by homelessness due to the large amounts of homeless individuals living on the streets and begging for money, food, and other necessities. The issue of homelessness has been a constant problem since the conquering of the New World, and soup kitchens and homeless shelters have not been able to fully end homelessness. Especially today, with a lack of affordable housing and high unemployment rates, homelessness is prevalent.
People drive or walk past a homeless person almost every day without thinking twice about the plight of that person or they may even unconsciously turn their heads the other way in disgust. Homelessness simply put, means without a home - therefore homelessness is an equal opportunity state that can happen to anyone. Even though we have seen some economic prosperity over the years, statistics show that the number of homeless remains very high. With this in mind, communities need to come together at the state, city, and individual level to come up with solutions to mitigate the spreading of this problem.
Homelessness is an aspect of society, which most people chose not to acknowledge. With the increasing amount of issues the United States faces, homelessness tends to be forgotten when the time comes for the government to establish what issues they should assist. Due to the substantial amount of issues the government concerns itself with, homelessness does not receive the necessary attention required and is improperly handled. In today’s society poverty-stricken individuals or families is too much of a common occurrence to be treated as lightly as it is. Additional government intervention is necessary in order to supply the needed resources, which can prevent the further spread of homelessness. The United States government is obligated to protect its citizens and should care about the constant growth of homelessness. Through economic policies and community advertisements, the government can control the issue of individuals who are facing poverty.
There is no doubt that being homeless has always been a problem in America. It is a problem for everybody, no one ever wants to be deemed homeless. Recent studies reveal that being homeless has now turned into an epidemic in some cities across the country. The homeless population has increased this year for the first time since the Great Recession and I think it is utterly ridiculous when the top two prominent cities in the United States (New York City and Los Angeles) are among the top three homeless cities in the world. The increase has been so disturbing that some state governments decided to call for a state of emergency. The reason behind the homeless population increase is due to the West Coasts flourishing economy. Rent wages increased
Given national recognition, The State of Homelessness in America benefits individuals needlessly suffering from a lack of shelter and a steady income. Efforts such as raising awareness and knowledge about the increase in the homeless population has sparked a number of organizations devoted to lessening the amount of individuals living on the streets in major cities. The state of homelessness is able to provide accurate information and statistics for viewers nationwide.
Every New Yorker has the right to a safe and affordable place to live in. New York’s shortage of affordable housing has reached a crisis point. Poor and elderly people throughout New York City are at a greater risk of homelessness and forced low-income residents do not have food or medical care to stay in their homes. A sinful structure of homelessness in New York City is New York’s shortage of affordable housing. Millions of New Yorkers are desperate to find affordable housing and tens of thousands are forced to live either in dirty shelters or on the streets. Recent data indicates that nearly 60,000 people, including more than 23,000 children, stay in the city’s main homeless shelter system (Guelpa). A small amount of poor renter households received a housing subsidy from the local government. Little assistance is being provided which means that most poor families and individuals that seek assistance
Homelessness is a very complex issue that affects the community from an economic and a social perspective. Homelessness and poverty are inevitably linked. Poor people are frequently unable to pay for housing, food, childcare, healthcare and education. The primary cause of homelessness though is the lack of affordable housing and the limited scale of housing assistance programs. “Often, poor people can afford to live only in inadequate housing-housing that is unsafe or broken down in a way that degrades the life and dignity of the residents.” (Windley-Daoust, 207). The growing gap between the number of affordable housing units and the number of people needing them has created a housing crisis for the less fortunate. Operating shelters, medical services, day centers and so on cost a lot of money and generally, funding for these programs come from taxpayer dollars and private donations. Many though go unfunded and many homeless are forced to find other methods to meet their needs. Since most communities do not have enough resources to give adequate shelter to the homeless, they will be ultimately forced to find alternate places to sleep and live. This could be behind buildings, benches, doorways of businesses and this can cause pollution within public areas. According to the National
‘A good text will engage us with enduring and relevant ideas’ Animal Farm, written by George Owell, emphasises this quote with unique themes to keep the story interesting and entertaining to readers alike. Main ideas in the story include betrayal, manipulation and corruption. Corruption is one of the core themes conveyed in this text. This is one of the main plot points in the story because it explains more depth of the Napoleon’s ambitions and his true characteristics and how this made the entire farm corrupted. The author used Napoleon’s character to base on Joseph Stalin, so he could personify his arrogant and selfish behaviour.
Lastly, one more thing the government can do to stop homeless from living on the streets is to open a place at night for them to just stay. Opening a place for homeless to come to at nights is a great thing to do. When winter months comes around, the days are going to be too cold for people to live out on the streets. Nobody can live out on the streets when the temperature is going to be below zero or close to zero. The government should start doing some of these ideas because one day it might be them that is homeless and don’t have any place to
Death Penalty has been and still is one of the biggest controversies in the United States and internationally. People have been discussing and debating whether or not the death penalty is effective or not. As opposers would argue, the death penalty deters crime and the criminals deserve it; however, the death penalty is a very costly procedure and time consuming as well as ineffective.
What does it mean to be a man? Some say it’s your age that determines whether or not you are a man, or it could be your maturity. Well, it's much more than that.
Homelessness has always been a problem in major cities across the United States and even the world. This problem also affects out local community and even all of us individually.
