Discrimination: The Percentage Of White Homeowners

What do you think of when you hear the word discrimination? In the articles written by Grace Hsiang and Brent Staples we get two different looks at what people think of when they hear the word discrimination. In Grace Hsiang’s article “FOB’s vs. Twinkies The New Discrimination is Interracial” Grace tells about a time where in her sociology class she was a part of a discussion about discrimination and racism. In this discussion she found that most of the discrimination to be by the people from the same race. The Asian Americans divide themselves into two groups, the FOBs, who stay true to their culture and practices.

As can be seen, people try to stop discrimination, but it still occurs based on color, race, gender, and actions and people do not realize they are being racist. Even though people fight against discrimination, there are many people being mistreated based on color and race. The people being discriminated for their color, race and gender, they are often ignored. People that are a different race than white seem to hide themselves from society. The world has made great strides towards upholding equality in different factions of the community. However, declaring that discrimination has been eradicated from the society would be incorrect, as it can still be observed in the foundations of the modern world. Unfortunately, the U.S. has a history of extreme case of discrimination, which has evoked controversy and in worse cases, violence. Discrimination, while highly troubling and disruptive to social progress, has been in practice for centuries. From biblical eras, when at one point Jews were held as prisoners under the law of the Pharaoh, to more modern times concerning issues with race and other differences such as today’s fight for same-sex marriage approval, there have always been issues presented in society resulting from the many dissimilarities found amongst the appearances, behavior, beliefs, et cetera of the public. As history has shown time and time again, it is simply not acceptable for discrimination to have a role in the happenings of current times. Gone now are the days where minorities would sit back and accept the unfair treatment that society would press their way. The public is much more aware of the rights that are afforded to them from birth by the terms of the Declaration and Constitution. Since the end of the Second World War, the housing market had blossom throughout the nation. Thousands of the American people and veterans were able to finance a home; however, there were many who were not given the same or equal opportunities. In A Matter of Place, the documentary argued that people are still facing housing discrimination in the U.S. Housing discrimination persist because a couple were denied housing due to their race and a man was solely harassed based on his sexual orientation.

These problems are very real and very important. Too many people have suffered, and even died because they differed from the majority. It’s not okay. We need to eradicate discrimination, and equity needs to become common practice. As Sojourner said in her speech, “If my cup won’t hold but a pint, and yours holds a quart, wouldn’t you be mean not to let me have my little half measure full?”

Discrimination by race is undoubtedly a large problem plaguing our nation, affecting the country since its founding in 1776, and even further in the past. It has unjustly hurt or helped many people, such as when employers are selecting applicants to be employees. Many people would rather hire or more easily trust the white man rather than the black man, despite both being the same in every way except skin pigment. This racism isn’t limited to blacks and whites, either. People originating from Asia, the Middle East, South America and Europe are also discriminated against in the same way blacks are, though with different methods of attack and stereotypes. This overall makes our country a very unwelcome country to be in, because the majority dislikes, on a wide spectrum from a distaste to full-on loathing, anyone who has a different colour or is from a different region.

In the United States today discrimination is still an issue in society. As a society progress has definitely been made, but it has never fully gone away. Some of the most discriminatory action takes place in the American justice system. Young minority males between the ages of 25-29 are subject to being treated the most unfairly while whites of the same age are still being treated better than any race in this country. African American and Hispanic males are being incarcerated at higher rates than white males in America. Not only are minorities being incarcerated more, but also they are subject to harsher sentencing terms, fall victim to police racial profiling, and have disparities in the war on drugs. In addition, freedom of discrimination is the United State main social problem. In a country like the United State, no one wants to be discriminated. That is why it is important to treat everyone with the same respect as well as equal right no matter what they religion, skin color, or life style are. World discrimination been around decades before civil right times in the US. The condition that leads to an issue like this, is human perception they have as an individual. However, for discrimination to end it have to start with each individual that is in this world. The current racial and ethnic problems are few. But discrimination may not only occur between different ethnic groups, discrimination can be also in daily life practiced . The work place, for instance, a few bosses neglect to hire individuals as result of who they are. Or some might gain promotions over other people , As well as in public spots , when people are treated disrespectfully in public places like restaurants , markets , hospitals and sport facilities because they look like or have a few attributes that others are not happy with . Education also might be discriminatory , Children from ethnic minorities have been denied admission, or scholarships, or have been excluded from educational programs.

Discrimination is an unjust way to treat others. A knowledgeable woman once said, “No individual, regardless of where they live or whom they love, should suffer discrimination.” Unfortunately, discrimination is widespread and happens too often. Humans need to stop discrimination and start respecting one another. If there was no discrimination, there would be less adversity and more kindness.

Maisto I was both excited and entertained for reasons such as this being the last week of class and also all the riveting information noted on the pages! Whether you believe it or not, racial discrimination is not a controversial matter of the past and has a profound impact on society. Nowadays we still inherit unconsciously misconceptions and prejudices that happen to be unnoticed in our day by day. Consequently, in order to raise awareness upon the connotation of this matter, we must educate people on behalf of assertiveness and comprehension.
