In recent decades, various kinds of discrimination against Arab Americans, Muslim and non-Muslim, and other Muslim Americans have been linked to international issues and related racial or religious stereotypes. For example, as early as 1972, in the wake of a Palestinian terrorist attack in Germany, then-President Richard Nixon, who was influenced by his negative framing of Middle Easterners, created a clandestine department specifically aimed at Arab Americans. This occurred even though no Americans were injured or killed in that attack against Israeli athletes, as a result of the CIA and the FBI collected information on Arab Americans and harassed many of those U.S.
In addition, the BLM need for social action is to exploit the anti-black racism, to drive for black people’s rights to live with self-worth and veneration and be incorporated in the American democracy that they helped generate. Altman, Rhodan, and Frizell (2015) explain that “We must recognize the effects of hundreds of years of discrimination. We must challenge our government, our institutions, our police forces, our criminal justice system, our corporations, and our schools and universities to constantly examine their policies to promote diversity and inclusion, to call out discrimination and reduce implicit bias” (p. 120). That being said, discrimination against black Americans is the foundation of this movement. Black American`s rights
What are Arab Americans? An individual can be classified as “Arab” if the person speaks Arabic, practices Islam, and identifies with the traditions of Arabic-speaking peoples. (Aguirre and Turner 276)These individuals are usually subject to negative and differential treatment by others. It is essential to identify the differential treatment of Arab Americans by others in society. The mistreatment of Arabs in the United States can be contributed to many factors; however, there have been certain events that have occurred in the United States, which have increased and enraged these strong emotional feelings in many Americans. Discrimination and stereotypes of a culture or group mainly develops from a lack of understanding. We can become a
What is Discrimination and how does it affect African-Americans who are interested in obtaining a high level of education in today’s social climate compared to the past generations? Discrimination against Blacks today is more covert due to the fact most kids attend public schools within their demographic unless their parents take it upon themselves to invest in the Childs future. Most people contend that the way the school systems are setup now segregation is taking effect on a slightly different scale. If for instance a family could choose to send their child to a much better school outside of the lower income neighborhood they may reside would that student become just as successful as the kid from the higher society neighborhood? It’s a known
Arab Americans have been targets of discrimination long before the 9/11 event happened. If they are immigrants in America, they are seen as bombers or terrorists. And if they are American citizens, they are seen as spies. The way Arabs are portrayed in Hollywood movies have been reflected in the way the government and society as a whole view them. And the way Americans show their discrimination is by rejecting or denying Arabs in all aspects of society which makes it harder for them to succeed. Overall, Arab Americans are seen as dangerous and threatening to Americans. Because they were being harassed all the time, they have a harder time adapting and participating in the American society. All young Americans have a hard time finding
As children grow up, they become the person they turn out to be because of experiences and the culture and society they grew up in. Nations are affected in the same sense because the people living in a nation affect how the nation is influenced and builds its character.
We have issues: more specifically , the United States has issues, continuous and all-encompassing issues of racial inequality. The United States is experiencing a outburst of racism, as can be seen from the 2014 killings of two unarmed African-American men, to the brutality of white supremacy in Charleston and the string of arsons in black churches across the South. Of course, it’s nothing new for a nation with a long history of extreme racist violence—the most recent lynching-related death occurred in 1981, hardly a lifetime ago, when Michael Donald was hanged by two members of the Ku Klux Klan. The United States, however, continues to avoid its history on race, refusing to confront its past in a “post-racial,” “colorblind” society, and that policy of systemic ignorance is particularly strong when mention of racial equality is brought up. Although the concept of equality has never truly existed in this world, as can be traced back to the very beginnings of recorded history we see the nobles ruling the commoners, conquerors reigning over the conquered, the will of man dominating women; the United States needs to acknowledge the fact that racial inequality still exists within our country and has in no way progressed towards betterment.
In our history and lives, humans tend to judge others. If they think they are not like themselves, they are weird and judge them of what they are. This problem is affecting our society today and was a bigger problem in our history. Our society’s achilles’ heel is judging others and not accepting who they are.
I was raised by grandmother in stamps Arkansas in St. Louis Missouri in the south where
African Americans for years have a long history of being treated unfairly and disgracefully by the people who founded this Country. The White Americans that live in the United States have always denied freedom and equality towards African Americans because of society treating them as slaves and property in the early years of the Country’s origin. From being slaves and treated as property, to being terrorized and lynched by the KKK, African Americans emerged with an organization to end all of any forms of violence, unfairness, and discrimination towards them. The Historical actions and people in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored people has achieved the objective to ensure the political, educational, social and economic
In the past, Asians were invited for labor opportunities that allowed them to work in the United States for a short period of time because they were thought to be loyal workers. Once the Asians were no longer wanted, quotas were established to limit the arrival of new Asian immigrants. Anti-Asian sentiments have given the United States the opportunity to discriminate against Asian communities through a variety of laws. For example, within the 1940’s many vulgar images of Japanese Americans began to filter the common American household. Thus, this caused many Americans to feel the need to separate from the Japanese into concentration camps away from their sight.
Discrimination has been a problem for many years, from the slaving of African Americans dating back to 1619, to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) individuals being shot in the streets a few weeks ago. However one specific group of people, transgendered people have been targeted for decades, yet they haven’t had the mass media coverage as other discrimination issues have. Focusing on their physical abuse, and psychological impact and the substance abuse from the discrimination they face; I hope to highlight these issues and show that they need help fighting this discrimination as well, and this isn’t just an individual problem but the bigger society’s issue.
Discrimination against African-Americans has been going on for many decades. Many African-Americans are still suffering from the effects of this. Many people who discriminate do not bother to analyze the damage that this is causing. Many African-Americans are suffering from stress problems, mental health issue, and some suffer from chronic stress. This issue has escalated for many years now and instead of it getting any better it is taking a turn for the worse.
The author Cornel West has addressed the prevalent issue of racial discrimination in the United States of America. His book holds a pivotal position as a best seller that talks about the urgency and importance of this issue. He has actually highlighted a range of issues that involves the racial discrimination against the Black Americans (West, 1993). He has opened discussions on the critical situation of black leadership, the injured relations between the Jews and the Black Americans, the conservatism of the Black Americans, and the parables of the black sexuality in America (Miah, n.d). The topic of racial discrimination is not a new one, but the bold interpretations of Cornel West has made the book worth reading. It has been an old debate now that the Black Americans are deprived of their fundamental rights in the United States, and due to this unequal and unjust treatment, there is a clear line of distinction between the societal values of the Black Americans and White Americans (West, 1993). Being different on the basis of cast, creed, culture, color, and ethnic background, Black Americans have been suffering from racial disparity, which is expected to be in prevalence for yet some more centuries.
Yes, I am aware that these college discriminate against all ethnicities other than white and it is ridiculous. I know that overall, many Asian countries out-compete America in Math and Reading because while our College system is elite, Americans are idiots and somehow believe that they should instead invest 500 billion $ a year into military rather than invest that into the minuscule 50$ billion they set for education. White people may not realize it, but America is held together by the minorities and they are too set on imperialism rather than improving their god-awful government. Asian people have always been smart, Europeans learned guns from the Chinese and the Japanese became westernized by Americans. Solely, I believe that every single
Being a Muslim in America country is a struggle, and ever since 9/11, things have taken a turn for Muslims. When Trump was elected president, the discrimination against Muslims has grown stronger. People need to be educated about Muslim culture and eliminate the perception that every Muslim is a “terrorist.” The community I am looking towards on the University of Kentucky campus is the MSA. The MSA is the Muslim Student Association and their goal is to promote Islam and teach us all about the peaceful nature of the religion. Throughout my paper these 5 sources that I researched played a major role in the Muslim community. My first source was a video called Muslim leaders speak out after mosque fire. My second source was an article called Young
