Good morning everyone today i will be exploring discovery and more specifically concealed discovery. Which will be explored through my additional texts which are the film Fight Club and JFKs speech on putting a man on the moon. What is discovery? To discover something is defined as to find information, a place or an object for the first time. The first text i will be exploring discovery in is Swallow the air. The first text i will be analysing is Swallow the air. Swallow the air is mainly filled with personal and cultural discoveries in the form of its protagonist May Gibson through the use of first person by Tara Jane Winch. Swallow the air explores through May’s experiences themes of loss, substance abuse, death, physical and emotional violence, culture and family. These themes are seen throughout swallow the air but i will be exploring these themes along with the aspects of discovery more in depth through the chapters ‘My bleeding Palm’, ‘Territory’ and ‘Home” …show more content…
This chapter also deals with issu.es that cause May to lose her trust in people, this is shown in the vulgar line. “This is gunna show ya where ya dont belong dumb girl”. This chapter also emphasises violence and racism with other despicable lines and actions. May goes through an ordeal that forces a change in her, this is similar to the personal discovery in Fight Club as May and the Narrator come to discover who they really are, who they must become and how they should respond with this new found understanding of the world. For May it is a discovery of prejudice and discrimination through cultural discovery that indigenous people such as her a treated horribly within society. For May she was treated as an object, sexually and violently harassed, as a lesson to teach her not to be just who she
This novel takes place in the South in the 1930s, a time and place where racial prejudice is very strong. Mayella is a poor white woman, but her race gives her power to manipulate Tom Robinson, since he is a negro. Her word is given precedence over Tom Robinson’s in court simply because of her skin color. In this time period, women,
One of the subjects is gender, at that time women was not too powerful. Women are expected to stay at home clean, cook, and take care of the children. In that case she is not strong at all and she used that against Tom Robinson. “To discover is to gain sight or knowledge of something.” How have ideas about discovery been shown in Away and The Book Thief
The movie, The Mission, begins with Jesuit priest, Father Gabriel, entering the Guarani tribe in South America. Shortly after, he is joined by Rodrigo Mendoza, a nearby prisoner who has been seeking penance. With the intent of converting the natives to Christianity, they were able to generate a bond that forces them to protect each other by whatever means necessary. After a treaty transferred their land from Spain to Portugal, Mendoza and Gabriel become determined to defend the mission, even if they disagreed on the way they would accomplish the complex task. Machiavelli’s teaching are heavily present throughout the film, copiously reflecting his beliefs within each community represented.
Midpoint in chapter five Lily tries to comprehend different features about May. The way she acts, talks, and expresses herself. As a character May is
Discovery is the act of detecting something new, or something old that had been unrecognised as meaningful. The nature of discovery allows an individual a new perspective and view of themselves, others, and the wider world. In The Tempest, William Shakespeare reveals how discovery can lead to a new-found identity, position and view on society. Whilst, in The Eagleman Stag, composer Michael Please reveals how a discovery allow a change in perception of themselves and relationship with others. Regarding both texts, it can be said, from the discovery of the truth, the individual is given the opportunity of a new perspective of themselves, others, and the wider world.
Compare and contrast how the texts you have chosen enlighten the audience about the concept of discovery and how they represent these ideas.
Propaganda is a word for the distribution of information that reflects the views and interests of those advocating such information. In other words, if the government is the source of the information, it is probably pro-government. Propaganda manipulates you by directing the aggression that would normally be directed at them, to another entity or group, such as Hitler blaming the Jews for Germany’s poor economy. It can also work to destroy the very logic that could be used to resist it, such as claiming that two plus two is five. Propaganda also tries to silence or discourage any of those who oppose it.
She then says nothing which shows how she is powerless towards her father’s actions ( such as alcoholism, child abuse, and sexual abuse\harassment toward Mayella). Mr. Robinson was kissed by Mayella and heard her father scream out a threat at her which shows how she has not the power of knowing right from wrong. Powerless to control her father’s actions towards Tom Robinson and herself Mayella’s

Can Discovery truly allows us to view life in a new and fresh way? Due to the complex and abstract nature of the concept of discovery, a true sense of discovery harbour's the ability to incite individuals in many differentiating ways as it can be provoked through their different past experiences. The concept of discovery has evidently evoked curiosity and inquisitiveness through the protagonists of both the indigenous play “Rainbows end” composed by Jane Harrison, and also through the novel “The fault in our stars” authored by John Green.
The term ‘discovery’ can be explored and interpreted in many different ways, the meaning is created by an individual’s perception, opinion and experiences of discovery. In the book Swallow the Air by Tara June Winch and the film, Titanic by James Cameron explores the concept of discovery as an idea that discoveries can be challenging as they allow for the transformation of an individual’s perspective, and they allow for an individual to discover their true identity and the identity of others around them.
The book I chose to read for my second Critical Analysis was Crank, a novel by Ellen Hopkins. The book is written in a form of free verse poetry. Crank is very loosely based on the author’s daughter Kristina, and her real struggle with an addiction to meth. On a trip to visit her more or less dead beat father Kristina has her first encounter with “the monster”. This coming of age story is full of symbolism, conflict, and characterization.
From reading this book, I have figured out that the theme was coming of age and facing maturity. What you are about to read are examples of this.
