How well are you actually protected on social media? Many people have mixed emotions about social media. While there are many advantages to using social media, there are also some disadvantages as well. According to the article “Could You Become a Mean Meme?” by Kristen Lewis, “Even the strictest privacy settings aren’t foolproof.” Thankfully, however, there are ways to protect yourself.
Social media allows us to do many things that were previously thought to be impossible. Not only can you communicate with people who are often a long distance away, but you can keep up-to-date on how their lives are going. You can post and share pictures with your friends and family. You can upload a video to YouTube that displays a talent you may possess. You can even chat with loved ones, who happen to be far away, over a video screen!
However, when something sounds too good to be true, it often is. Although the perks of using social media are great, there are several catches to really make you wonder how safe it truly is. For example, if you share questionable pictures in a seemly private group chat, you run the risk of them being exposed to the outside world. According to Kristen Lewis, “Anyone can take a screenshot,” so therefore once you share something, it has the potential of ending up anywhere. Also, outside parties can intrude on a personal account that you intend to only make viewable to those close to you. On the bright side, there are ways to aid in your privacy.
Lewis talks about how true social media is when it comes to our privacy. in the first article, "Could You Become a Mean Meme". It says how not all privacy are true to matter. Lewis states "However, even the strictest privacy settings aren't foolproof. Anyone can take a screenshot- even of something you post in a private group, chat, text or app- and post in on another site where you have no control over it (Lewis 13).
In the article “could you become a mean meme” Kristen Lewis informs readers of the advantages and disadvantages of social media, as well as how to be smart with privacy. As your on social media you are getting watched on everything your on in your phone. Social media is great because you can talk to family and friends miles and miles away ,but there are some disadvantages for communication; however you can protect your privacy.
The book, I Know Who You Are and I Know What You Did, by Lori Andrews, states that social network as in Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Instagram, Snapchat, and etc. causes conflict in many aspects of life. In today society, social media seems to reveal more a more negative side of the public. Andrews also states that social media is a distraction to every aspect of life including job careers, education, politics, religion, family, and even death. Invading privacy on social media and violating rights of others can cause disturbing commotion and could lead to prosecution. People should use discretion when posting online, and make sure not to post anything purposely offensive or distasteful and graphic content.
There are many issues with privacy today, not only with social media but with credit purchases and data given to banking and medical facilities as well. Another example is selling information, also known as “data dealing”, taken from random postings on blogs and in chat rooms that invade the internet today. In addition there are also many companies tracking and then selling whatever one puts out there. Individuals must be careful about the URLs they use which can result in spam, malware and phishing attacks.
Private information that was previously segregated now becomes easily accessible to employers, colleagues, recruiters, and clients, among other perhaps unintended audiences” (Abril, 2012, para. 4). Yes, most social media sites attain privacy settings but one must always remember there are hiccups in everything on the internet and no guarantees leaks will not occur.
Even though the social media I listed above, FaceBook, has privacy settings none of your information is really private. Even if you have things just available to your friends or family, they could share whatever it is that you posted and next thing you know, your picture is being photoshopped for some Tumblr picture. It also doesn’t help that your picture, especially your profile picture on websites, is on Google images. I actually know this because I’ve seen my face on Google images because I’ve looked it up.
Social media. Is it safe, is it not? I believe that social media is not safe because people can be cyberbullied, and lastly, anything you post on social media can't be erased.
There is also some people that suffer of a lack in trusting in their selves, social media play an important role by helping them to have more confidence and meeting a similar mankind. Social media is not safe because it is not a filtrated environment and people are different but it is a criteria of our human being.
Social medias have become a big part of our society now, they are being used in all aspects of our life. We are connected twenty-four hours a day, at work, school, home, shopping etc. There is a necessity, a need to be connected to these social media’s, to feel like you are a part of society. With these growing numbers in being connected to social media’s on the web, there comes a growing desire for privacy and safety. In this paper I will discuss and analyze the social media’s themselves, the dangers that arise from them, and how all these correlate to privacy.
Most people in the world have some form of social networking such as Facebook Twitter, Instagram, etc. In today’s day, kids are getting more and more attached to these types of sites, especially kids under 16. It even seems like an average teen or pre-teen has to take a “selfie” every 5 minutes. Some of these teens say it is good to have such a reliable way to connect with friends over social networking websites. Is this an accurate statement? Is this true without any complications or flaws? Does a person on an average daily basis hear good news on a channel stating that there is no danger? There are noticeable flaws within these social networking websites. Such flaws can lead to horrific danger, and it is at a person’s fingertips! Even
However, there are some negative effects that come with social media. Research has shown that social networking sites can be very addictive. People who use social networking sites for their daily communication are hooked to a point that they neglect health responsibilities, especially their diet. The addictive nature of social media can lead to eating disorders, obesity, heart problems, sleep disorders, and other pertinent health issues. ("Social Networking: Advantages vs. Addictions.") Another downside to social media is that the user could share too much information which may pose threats to them. (Ali, Imtiaz) People using social media need to know the risks that come with social networking. Users can help protect themselves by not sharing personal information with others they do not know and by having their social networking profiles on a private setting.
Social Media is a current way in which people are using to interact with one another daily. Since the launch of various Social Networking Sites (SNS) its been a huge attraction in a new way to share information with others and correspond with interests of your choice in many different forms. Although social media sites allow users to share information with friends and other sites on the internet, many people are unaware of how their privacy is getting out. Now that the expansion of global connection through these social media networking sites are so highly present in todays society, giving us easy access to information, the lack of one's privacy is being diminished. Everyday peoples privacy rights are
Society today always state claims to privacy or being private but turn right away and post everything on social media making privacy just a myth. Privacy preserves negative space around individuals who are already fully formed or mostly fully formed, affording shelter from the pressures of societal and technological change (Cohen, 2013). There is no way around the fact that we use technology daily, but we should take in consideration how we should guard ourselves from the consequences of sharing with the world everything little detail that goes on in our lives. It amazes me how most people don’t think that posting their every move or what their eating or drinking or even where there going shopping will not get the attention of something or someone negative.
The use of Social media has flourished to a great extent in today’s world. It has played a significant role by providing a platform for people to connect, communicate, share ideas and so on. Facebook, twitter, Instagram are some of the most common social networking sites that usually intrigue us. The day is not far where everyone in this world will have a Facebook account one day. We obviously know the benefits are derived from the use of social media, but have you ever thought that it can also lead you to a serious threat? I personally liked social networking until I found that it advocates laziness by wasting my precious time. Indeed, I was just thinking about this today and how awesome it was a decade ago when friends would call me just to say hi. Nowadays, it seems everything that is posted is like my junk mail full of advertisements and borrowed quotes. I came to realize that Social Media is actually not secure these days. You’ll be surprised how the evolution of technology has had an adverse effect on this growing society. So, is social media really a blessing?
I have accounts on multiple platforms of social media, including, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. I believe that most of my posts on these sites reside in the fourth circle of intimacy, that is between myself and casual acquaintances (e.g. coworkers and classmates). I consider myself to be a very private person and I am very cautious about who I do and do not share personal information with. I view all platforms of social media as avenues for the spread of information. I think that any posts shared to social media have the potential to be seen by more than just your “friends” or “followers.” As such, I do not post photos or text that I would not want to be seen by those in my fourth circle of intimacy. I do this despite the fact that I only accept “friend” and “follow” requests from those whom I personally know.
