Overview
Cities exist because of the benefits of centralized production and exchange. By living and working in cities, we achieve a higher standard of living but also put up with pollution, noise and congestion. (O'Sullivan, 2012)
Megacities are large and highly dynamic systems, and represent concentrated sites of human life as well as ecological stress and pollution. Due to the combination of pollution and stress as neighbourhoods grow in size and their resource capacity, the transformation in social-environmental relations is also observed. Over time more local environmental hazards associated with inadequate services and sanitation is being replaced by risks that accrue at the city scale. Most megacities are important nodes in the production of pollution and greenhouse emissions which have negative impacts on populations at regional and also global scales. Historically coastal megacities have recorded some of the highest economic losses due to disaster events but megacities are also the centres of capacity, ingenuity and resources. The management of hazards, vulnerability and environmental management in megacities is very complex, and governance responses require special attention to the multiple scales of impact. (Mark Pelling, 2013)
Cities around the world are growing at a never experienced rate. Over the past thirty years the number of people

Automobiles contribution is reported to account for 40 to 80% of the total air pollution in megacities. The challenge Megacities face is how to reduce the adverse environmental impacts and other negative effects of transportation without giving up the benefits of mobility. This becomes more pressing under conditions of rapid urban growth, which is likely to increase travel demand significantly. (S. K. Goyal,
Task #1 : Analyse the impacts of at least two urban dynamics operating in a large city of the developed world.
From the very start, we could all see that Tom Buchanan was far from a good guy. He lives in the East Egg with his wife Daisy, and every time we saw him it seemed like he had a different life. Furthermore, Tom is a man of pride, which makes his rivalry with Jay Gatsby much more intense. He betrayed everyone he met and used his wealth to avoid bad situations. Which is why the best theme to fit with Tom Buchanan is betrayal and corruption.
Every day, millions of Americans turn on the engines of their cars and drive to school or work. What these people do not realize is that the vehicles they operate greatly pollute the planet. According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s recent website post, “Environmental Impacts from Automobiles”,
There are many advantages of cities, both modern day, and ancient. Cities help prevent diseases, they organize people and make them more productive, and they help the economy. In document 1, Edward Glaeser tells how cities help prevent diseases lowers, because all immunities spread when people are close together. People are dying a lot less for a while in cities because of this. In documents 1, 2, and 3, people say how cities organize, and make people more productive. When people are closer together, they can innovate, and help each other out, as a pose to suburbs where people are separated, and generally don't help, each other. This leads directly to cities having a good economy. When everyone is working and things are going smoothly, the city
If the public transportation improves, more and more people would take buses instead of driving. Then there would be less CO2 for our environment. Mohammad-Beigi, Nouri and Liaghati (2015) claim that the population in large cities is growing very fast, which means that transportation needs also increase really fast which leads to environmental problems. Therefore, in order to solve the problem, improving public transportation is a good solution. This study shows that driving cars really causes air pollution and it is harm for our environment. Phoenix is the largest city in Arizona, so the population growth in Phoenix will lead to the same problem that the three author mentioned. Improving public transportation will be helpful in decreasing the number of drivers and therefore reducing toxic emission. According to the PR Newswire Europe Improving public transportation in Brasilia (2009) claim public transportation is good because buses are more orderly, and they are safer and have less impact on the environment. It also shows that public transportation can help to reduce air pollution. Phoenix is an urban city like Brasilia, so it has a similar situation. Improving public transportation would be a good solution because it will lead to less driving. Then we will reduce exhaust gas
For these reasons, big cities around the world are centers of culture and creativity, driving the advancement of the human race. There are many reasons why people choose to move to big cities and many reasons why people choose to stay there. There are many factors that have led to our big cities becoming as they are today. Each of these factors has led to the big cities of the world becoming diverse centers of Art and innovation constantly leading the world forward into the realm of the
Three problems with the rapid growth of cities: increased poverty across the city, poor living conditions, and the birth of the political machine.
Motor vehicles are a leading source of air pollution. Even though automobile and truck engines have become far cleaner in recent decades, the sheer
It is estimated that over 50% of the world’s population now lives in urban areas and that this will rise to 70% by 2050. Such a change will
With the advent of globalization and industrialization, urban migration and expansion of cities have become a global trend. South American nations are amongst being most rapid urbanized countries. As more people migrate to urban areas in search of better work opportunities, the cities here are growing in size and number (Ferguson & Navarrete, 2003). This problem is native to not just Latin American countries but is a major concern for most of the developing world. As estimated by the UN (United Nations, 2016), 3 billion people or about 40% of the world population would be living in substandard housing as a result of urban expansions and population growth. This is perceived to be a direct impact of rapid urbanization and excessive strain on
Humans have evolved immensely throughout centuries and the trend toward urbanization is a worldwide phenomenon that impacts the environment, economy and various aspects of human life. In America before the 18th century, manufacturing was done by hand using homemade tools and basic machinery, the industrialization of America led to an increase of immigration and an influx of people drawn to cities where new economic opportunities were available. “Urbanization is the process by which town and cities are formed and become larger as more people begin living and working in central areas”. It occurs casually from individual and corporate efforts to reduce expense in commuting and transportation. The level and growth of urbanization differs by region
Due to advancement in technology, there has been an increase in emission of pollutants from the vehicles. Electric cars do not produce pollutants which are very important for the cities to stay green and pollution free as the air quality has deteriorated a lot.
Each month, in developing countries, five million people have access to the cities. The trend towards concentration in some developed countries like the US is clamorous: 243 million Americans are concentrated in urban 3% of the country.
Pollution has become a heated issue in recent years. The destruction of the environment along with serious health problems are the eventual effects. The extensive use and availability of automobiles, tremendous amounts of production in the booming economy and the constant increase in demand for energy, can be held responsible.
Cities are places which have huge amount of gathering of people, collection of economic activities and complex infrastructure for people which all together are supported by transport systems.
