Direct Characterization In Lamb To The Slaughter

The common theme of "Lamb to the Slaughter" and "The Tell-Tale Heart" is that presumptions give people power to betray others, as revealed through the characters' actions. Both "Lamb to the Slaughter" and "The Tell-Tale Heart" are about supposedly inferior people who rise up and murder their oppressors, tricking many people along the way. Throughout "Lamb to the Slaughter", it is clear that Mary Maloney is only able to get away with murder because the detectives assume a woman would never commit such an atrocity. While they search for the murder weapon, one of them told Mary that "the murderer might not have taken it with him, but he might have thrown it away" (Dahl 4). She made sure everything was perfect for him and to never do anything wrong. She could not think of anything she had done to deserve such news. She immediately rejected the news and decided to pretend as if it never happened. Patrick was behaving so cruel to her while she was being nothing but nice to him. She even continued to make him dinner and he yelled at her saying not to because he is going out. This angered Mary resulting her to hit him with the leg of lamb and kill him. This shows that Mary is a sympathetic character because she was always compliant to Patrick. He had no right to disrespect her as he did.

In the short story “Lamb to the Slaughter,” written by Roald Dahl, Dahl uses direct and indirect characterization to give us both realistic and improbable portrayals of characters, In addition to showing us the values and perspective of the characters. In this short story the author states, “This was her sixth month expecting a child.” (Dahl, 1). Direct characterization is when the author directly provides information on the personality or background on the character instead of indirectly revealing it through actions and speech. This quote obviously utilizes direct characterization by describing background information on Mary Maloney. Additionally, the fact that it was her sixth month expecting a child is direct characterization because we did not have to assume it through actions and speech, the author directly mentioned it in the first page. Not only does Dahl use direct characterization, but also indirect characterization. In the story the author states, “It’s probably right under our noses. What do you think Jack? And in the other room Mary Maloney began to laugh.” (Dahl 4). Indirect characterization is when the author reveals background and the personality of the character through thoughts and actions. In like manner, so does this quote. In this quote the author reveals the personality of Mary Maloney through her speech instead of directly giving us information. In this quote, Mary Maloney laughs at the death of her husband and we can assume that she is a cruel

Authors use characterization to develop the actions of the characters. Like Mary’s actions in ‘The Lamb to the Slaughter’ by using different kinds of literature devices. Roald Dahl in "The Lamb to the Slaughter" uses characterization, imagery, and irony to develop the character of Mary so that the reader can understand what has occurred during the murder.

In the “ Lamb to the Slaughter,” this girl Mary as the police officer’s wife, she was a caring loving person, she loved him so much then when he came home from work he had something on his mind, and it started to worry Mary. so Mary started to get a little worried about the way we was acting he was acting like he didn’t want anything to do with her. So he finally tells her that he wants a divorce with her, she didn’t know what to do so she went in there and was going to cook him a meal, but he stopped her and said he is going out. Then she took that Lamb leg and killed him with it hit him on top of the head. She didn’t mean to she loved him so much she snapped and killed him.

Mary in “Lamb to the Slaughter” and Minnie Foster, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters in “A Jury of Her Peers” have similarities and differences between the two short stories. Both Mary and Minnie Foster are childless housewives who were fearful of their husbands. The wives were both interrupted from their normal routine by an incident that triggered them to murdering their husbands. After finding out he was leaving her, Mary is shocked into killing her husband with a leg of lamb which they were having for dinner. Minnie puts a rope around her husband’s neck while he is sleeping because he broke her pet canary’s neck. The two stories depict the wives as sympathetic figures who were justified in the crimes; neither murder was premeditated.

You wouldn’t expect the lamb to kill the man. “ Lamb to the Slaughter” by Roald Dahl is a about a women named Mary Maloney that killed her husband. Mary’s husband tells her that he is leaving her. Not knowing what to do to try to keep her husband, she gets a leg of lamb and hits her husband in the back of the head and kills him. She quickly covers her tracks and fools the police, offering them the leg of the lamb for dinner to get rid of the evidence. Therefore Roald Dahl’s use of irony throughout the story, builds up a understanding of Mary Maloney.

In Roald Dahl’s short story “Lamb to the Slaughter” , Mary Maloney murders her husband, a detective, after he declares that he is leaving her. Mary then has to cover her tracks or else she and her unborn child will be killed. Throughout the story, Mary’s character changes from loving wife to cold killer and back again based on her situation.

This shows that the wife is easy going and that she doesn’t rebel against her husband when he abuses her, whereas the situation of the wife in ‘Lamb to the slaughter’ is different. She is referred to by her name Mary Maloney and is six months pregnant. This is important because it shows what stage of her marriage life she is in and if it affects the outcome of the story. She is reliable and dependant on her husband to make her happy as it quotes ‘she loved to luxuriate in the presence of this man’. This shows that Mary enjoys just sitting down if it is her husband who is beside her. Also when you first begin to read ‘Lamb to the slaughter’ you get the sense of feeling that Mary Maloney is calm and caring ‘there was a slow smiling air about her’. The writer does this so that the reader begins to think that Mary’s character is gentle and warm. The murder then becomes more horrific as the reader does not expect a sudden change of character.

The short story Lamb to the Slaughter is interesting to read because of how gullible the detectives were. Mary cooked the lamb that she used to kill her husband with, then she tells the detectives to eat it and they do. They were talking amongst themselves saying that all she wanted to do was cook him dinner, so she couldn’t have killed him. There are possibly two reasons as to why the detectives were gullible. The first one is that Mary, Jack and the detectives were all good friends, “they always treated her kindly” (Roald 15). So

Mary's husband tells her that he is leaving her. "´So there it is," he added. "And I know it's a bad time to be telling you this, but there simply wasn't any other way. Of course, I'll give you money and see that you're taken care of. But there really shouldn't be any problem. I hope not, in any case.´¨ The husband makes it sound like Mary must depend on him -- like she is worthless without him. In reality, Mary can take care of herself. As if to prove this point Dahl has Mary kill her husband. Which can be seen as the ultimate act of revenge. At this point, Mary has called the cops and they are arriving. ¨´The car came very quickly, and when she opened the front door, two policemen walked in. She knew them both. She knew nearly all the men at the police station."Is he dead?" she cried. "I'm afraid he is. What happened?´" This is perhaps the darkest form of revenge simply out of the fact that the statements she makes are out of anger. It is plain deceit -- Mary is lying to men she has known for a long time. The dark and simple dialogue in this section of Lamb to the Slaughter shows an extreme form of revenge, in the case, murder.

Mary is very manipulative in that she is able to create the character of the poor, pregnant wife, whose husband has just been murdered. She is able to convince the police to take pity on her, to mix her a drink and then to even eat the evidence, the leg of lamb that she has left in the oven. "Why don’t you eat up that lamb that is in the oven" (Dahl, p. 17). Mary realizes that if the police find the evidence she will go to jail. Her quick thinking and manipulative character results in the police officers eathign the evidence and therefore she cannot be charged of this crime. These actions show the complex character that Mary Maloney truly is.
