Home is considered to be this place where you live permanently with your family, a place of comfort. When a character or a human for that matter embarks on a journey all they really long for is to return home to their family and loved ones. Thus, their homecoming is an important aspect to heroes in a fantastic journey. In the Epic poem The Odyssey performed by Homer and in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey we are able to obtain these very different notions of home. The main protagonists of each work have a different approach towards this notion of home. The protagonist Odysseus is constantly urging to return home to his family. In contrast, Dave, the protagonist is embarking on a journey in which he knows there is a big chance that he won’t …show more content…
Odysseus seems to be in this state where he forgets about home and does not want to return home. Odysseus’ crew has to remind him that they have to return home which is the only reason why they leave because if it were for Odysseus he would stay with Calypso living in paradise.
The only thing Odysseus truly desired for twenty years was to return home to his family. Although Odysseus was looking forward to his homecoming, when he finally arrives home he disguises as a beggar, which is an odd thing to do considering that he was already home. He disguises himself, as a beggar because he was not sure whom he could really trusts considering he has been away for twenty years. He also wanted to test all the citizens and Penelope, his wife, of her loyalty. I believe that Odysseus unconsciously knew that the notion of home that he knew before has not changed. Once he proves that he could trust his family, he is just there for one night. It seems he could never truly stay home and Poseidon’s curse is true. Also, Odysseus seems to come to realize that his true home is actually being in an adventure with his crewmen. Odysseus undergoes so much suffering such as near death experiences just to arrive home.
In contrast to Odysseus in The Odyssey, in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, released during the year of 1968, we do not get this sense of home. The main character, Dave, and other humans take on this journey into the unknown space in which they have no idea whether or not
In the poem it reads, “The crew reminded me of home. . . . The gosses [said] ‘You will never see you're home again . . . by sailing there directly. You must detour to the land of Death, there to consult the blind prophet’” (Homer 10). A trait of a Epic hero is that they always strive to complete their goals no matter what situation is put in front of them. When Odysseus is traveling home, more and more obstacles attempt to divert his path. However, Odysseus never stops his quest to return to his home and reunite with his son and his wife. Since Odysseus has such an extensive amount of resilience, he fits his hero
Homer’s epic poem “The Odyssey” develops the theme of home by revealing that home is a feeling that is above all others. Homer does this through the character Odysseus and the use of symbolism.
One of Odysseus’s crew members reminds Odysseus, “‘Captain, shake off this trance, and think of home- if home indeed awaits us, if we shall ever see your own well timbered hall on Ithaca.”’ (925)
When you hear the word home, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Is it the place where you were raised, or where you’re currently residing? Do you think of something more emotional such as a person that you are most comfortable with, perhaps even yourself? Different people have different definitions of the word home. Homer uses it in a more literal way in his epic poem “The Odyssey” and Oliver used the word in a more spiritual way in her poem “The Journey”. “The Odyssey” by Homer was written back in the 8th century BC as a follow up of Homer's first epic poem “The Iliad”. The story follows King Odysseus of Ithaca and his men on their journey home from the Trojan war. “The Journey” written by Mary Oliver presents the journey of one
Home is the place everyone wants to return after being away. In The Odyssey written by Homer, a man named Odysseus wants to return home more than anything in the world. The poem has many epic themes including good and evil, life and death, and courage and honor. Notably, the most meaningful aspect is the importance of home. Odysseus' desire to return to his homeland and beloved family gives him the strength to overcome physical challenges and moral temptations.
On Scherie, Odysseus states that “All I seek now is my passage home”. The use of “all” shows that it is the only thing he wishes for and therefore his sole motive since he has left Calypso’s island. It can be argued, however, that it is only because Odysseus has achieved kleos (his name is known even in the heavens) and no longer has the responsibility of his men that his sole motive is now nostos. Also, he has now been away from home for twenty years, and is now truly homesick.
After twenty long years away from his family, Odysseus still has motivation to return to Ithaca. Odysseus could have stayed with the princess of the Phaeacians, but instead he wants to go home to his family. Odysseus’ wife, Penelope and their son, Telemachus motivate Odysseus. Alkinoos offers Odysseus his daughter’s hand in marriage: “My daughter should be yours and you my son-in-law, if you remained. A home, lands, riches you should have from me if you could be content here” (Homer 120). Odysseus refuses the king’s offer: “O Father Zeus, let all this be fulfilled as spoken by Alkinoos! Earth of harvests remember him! Return me to my homeland” (120). Odysseus knows that his family has been waiting for him for years. The motivation to see his family and homeland help Odysseus win his battles and continue his journey home.
Odysseus’s journey home started when he was getting ready to set sail and leave Troy after the Trojan War. Odysseus shouts how he solved the war all by himself without any help from the gods. He is arrogant about their victory which angers Poseidon. Poseidon, along with other gods, curses his journey home.
The amazing epic poem by Homer entitled “The Odyssey” shares many similarities and many differences as well with the Hallmark movie of the same name. The epic poem is about the hero Odysseus who has spent twenty long years filled with toil and loss, through war and sea desperate to return to his home of Ithaca. Odysseus has angered some of the gods and goddesses of a Greek Mythology with his destruction of the mighty city of Troy. Odysseus is represented in the poem and the movie, but there are several differences between the two in the events he encountered. There are also numerous similarities
During Odysseus’ journey in ‘The Odyssey’, Odysseus runs into a couple problems. He leaves home ready to fight in the Trojan War. Although he had plans on coming home, he never made it home. His wife Penelope and his son Telemachus assumed that Odysseus was dead. It was not until Athena came to Telemachus and gave him everything he needed to make it to his dad. What Telemachus did not know was that Odysseus wanted to come home, but he could not because he was being held prisoner on an island named Ogygia. Odysseus wants nothing more to return home and see his lovely wife Penelope.
The Odyssey is filled with emotion and adventure. Homer’s ability to show and give the reader a visual of each and every scene gives the story its unbelievable significance. To all the people who read his work there is something to be captured within every sentence, each one different in its own, unique way. Through tales of courage and defeat, friendship and love this book tells of all the values within the life of a single, solitary man, and his journey to attain what is true and dear to him. And this journey is known to all of us as The Odyssey. The Odyssey is a test of human devotion and trust through the gods, the mortals, and the obstacles through which they venture. No matter where they go or what they do, humans are tested for
Odysseus never gave up on his goal of returning Ithaca. He doesn’t stop to returning home, because he wants to see his family. “Odysseus don’t flare up at me now, not you, always the most understanding men alive” (pg.462). Odysseus did not lose any hope to pursue his tasks in spite of multiple hardships. He worried about his family and his home.
There have been many proposed theories to the great hero Odysseus’ return to Ithaca. Odysseus has wandered long and far to make his return to his home soil. He fought Cyclopes, fled from cannibalistic Giants, spent seven years on a nearly deserted island, and literally went to hell and back just to breathe the air of his motherland. There has been great debate on what kept the enduring hero from giving up. He could have accepted his fate as an immortal on the Island of Calypso or allowed his will power to dwindle and fallen into the jaws of Charybdis. What did the hero truly desire so much that he refused the will of the Gods to reach his native land. It was his beloved wife Penelope.
Odyssey a long series of wanderings filled with notable experience and hardships, or in other words the journey of life. Homer's The Odyssey is an epic poem telling of one man's journey. Odysseus, the chosen traveler of this Odyssey, represents the will and perseverance of all humanity. Odysseus' journey symbolizes the true toils of mankind's development through, agility, doubt, and faith.
Homecoming is the theme of the protagonist’s journey to get home. This is the main theme and focus point in Homer’s the Odyssey. Odysseus went off to fight in the trojan war when the war was over Odysseus didn’t give credit to the gods for their victory (Homer). The gods saw this as an act of disrespect and punished Odysseus accordingly. The gods cursed Odysseus and his crew members so they couldn’t get home to Ithaca. Instead of a two-week travel, the men were sailing the sea for ten years. Odysseus’s determination to get home helps develop the theme of a homecoming throughout the novel, because he faced multiple setbacks yet always worked hard to get home.
