Diagnosing and Treating Major Depressive Disorder I, Peter McJessy, have been struggling with dramatic changes in my mood and behavior. I noticed these changes beginning sometime in August of this year, and they are present now in late October. I suspect that I am struggling with depression, irritability, and insomnia. These mood changes have affected my relationship with my wife, Nicole, and our two daughters, as well as my job performance at Hardy Incorporated. In the following email letter written while I was on vacation at Davis, North Carolina, I apologize to Nicole for my seemingly uncontrollable negative attitude, while attempting to understand my situation. Background Nicole, I just felt the need to write to you since I finally have time to sit down and think. This is my first day here on the island and I already miss you and the girls. So far the trip has been a disappointment, and this is only the second day. I wanted to go to Hatteras before we booked this cabin at Davis Island in February, but everyone else here already decided on it. So far the fish aren’t biting, its bitter cold, and the rain hasn’t let up for hours. I thought we would have had better weather since October is supposed to be ideal for fishing. I guess we got it wrong this time. Anyway, I wanted to tell you that I’m sorry. I hate that I’ve been so distant lately. I just haven’t felt like talking much, so I’ll go ahead and tell you right now what is going on. I don’t know exactly when it started,
