Infancy is from the ages 0-3 years old. It’s a time of rapid growth. During this period of time most changes occur. Children are developing physical, intellectual, emotional and social skills. Baby’s are helpless and depend on their carer in order for them to survive. Physical- Baby’s cant live on their own. Baby’s are born with reflexes. These include sucking, swallowing, stepping and grasping. Intellectual – The baby’s mind begins to develop, where they begin to remember things, recognise things and know and understand the things are around you. Also they begin to gain communication skills. Emotional- Babies at this age are not unable to communicate so show their emotion by crying or laughter and may use some facial expressions to show how they feel about what’s going on around them. As they get older say around two years old they show their emotion by having tantrums. When they reach three they begin to care about the people around them and tend to share toys with them and play with them. Social- Social development occurs throughout the stages of our life. Even babies become social able as they tend to listen and react when they hear someone else speak out aloud. (Personschoolsandfecolleges, 2017) Childhood (3-10) Childhood development begins at the age of 3 years old and stops at age 10. From 3 onwards you have developed some physical skills, for example they can fully be able to walk. Taking them from simplistic pre-schooler’s to independent thinkers also learning
They enjoy playing and show it by smiling and squealing with delight. They are able to focus on an object and explore it if it seems interesting. Babies also start to show us that they understand a little of what we are saying and try to communicate with us.
Intellectual Development (0-3 Years) Beginning to realise others are separate beings from themselves, imitates others and tries out ways of behaving in play, becoming more confident but still needs adult reassurance
As a child grows they will need less physical contact and will start to use more words an more complex words, they will also start to ask a lot more questions, understanding this will allow the child to develop and help them to grow
In the film Babies, 4 infants are being observed for the first two years of their lives. Each babies comes from different culture, which shows how the various customs can impact the child’s development. Ponijao is the youngest one in his family and lives in a village in Opuwo Namibia. Bayar lives in Bayanchandmachi, Mongolia. Mari is the first child of a couple who lives in Tokyo Japan, and Hattie lives in Sans Francisco California. The film shows the babies develop cognitively, physically and socially-emotionally, during the infancy and toddler years. The Infancy and toddlerhood period is from birth to 2 years. “This period brings dramatic changes in the body and brain that support the emergence of a wide array of motor, perceptual, and intellectual capacities” (Berk & Meyers, 2016, p.6).
A child develops through its whole life. They can develop; physically, linguistically, intellectually, socially and behaviourally. “Physical development is the way in which the body increases in skill and becomes more complex in its performance” [Meggitt, 2000, Page 2]. Twenty five days after conception; the body of the chid has developed immensely from the small fertilised egg. Up to birth the foetus mainly develops physically however once the child is born the child then begins the long process of development. Not only do the gross motor skills and the fine motor skills develop on the baby, but the sensory development also widens on the child.
In the initial few months babies will recognise familiar voices and faces, they will try to 'people please' and bay for attention by performing for their audience through laughter and giggles. They will enjoy playing games with others such as peek a boo.

At 1 year, babies are able to sit up and feed themselves using fingers. They also know what they like and do not like, food that they don’t like usually ends up on the floor. Babies are now able to understand more of what is going on and communicate with long strings of babble.
A child’s development can be measured through physical and language milestones, intellectual, emotional and social development.
The physical development of a baby in its first six months of life shows limited range of movement but the beginnings of an ability to respond to stimulus around them. They show their reaction to people, sounds and movement by turning their head toward whatever attracts their attention. Babies are able to imitate at birth and inherit a great amount of knowledge that are past down in genetics, religion, and culture. Although babies are so cute and cuddly at birth, it can be frustrating to take care of an infant at times. “Harold controlled the hours of her sleep, the span of her attention, the time she could shower, rest, or go to the bathroom” (Brooks, 35). Mothers are becoming physically and mentally exhausted by their infant’s ability to dominate their world and change mother’s personalities.
Infants are a special cohort of a population in the society. Children between the ages of five months to two years are at a stage where they start familiarizing with their surroundings and have different reactions to situations. The surrounding where an infant grows greatly determines his or her development. The primary determinant of the development of infants is the parent-infant interaction (Crain, 2015). The first bond or relation of a child is with its biological parents or guardians in the case of orphaned children.
