Developing Underdeveloped Social Skills For Children Growing Up

In this essay, we will identify and describe the seven goals for teaching appropriate social skills. First, helping children develop empathy and to learn to be generous, altruistic, and able to share equipment, experiences, and people with other children. Furthermore, helping children learn that being kind to others feels good and teaching children that everyone has rights and these rights are to be respected by all. While also emphasizing the value of cooperation and compassion rather than stressing competition and winning. Finally, helping children discover the pleasures of friendship and helping children with special needs fit into the life of the group.

This could negatively affect the children, because this would make it harder for parents to teach their kids manners and/or talk to them about the process of growing up. In "What Adolescents Miss Growing Up in Cyberspace," Brent Staples argues that children that have easy access to internet connection have a difficult time maturing. He points out that people who often use electronic devices have a hard time socializing in person: "teenagers nowadays are both more connected to the world at large than ever, and more cut off from the social encounters that have historically prepared young people for-the move-into adulthood." As technological advances are being made every day, the average adult has begun to increase their screen time daily. More people are spending time on their devices, than going out and interacting with others and their community. People also tend According to a study by David Greenfield, this addiction occurs to individuals who are unable to interact with others in real life and tend to be “socially reclusive” (Greenfield 1). This highlights how some individuals feel uncomfortable connecting in person, so they go to social media to assist them in mingling with other people who share similar problems. Unlike past generations, millenials have been using the internet much more as a platform to interact and this has caused several individuals to become addicted to their personal devices. This real life fear also causes many who attempt to withdraw from this addiction to have long term side effects. Some of these effects consist of “experience withdrawal including: anger, depression, relief, mood swings, anxiety, fear, irritability, sadness, loneliness, boredom, and restlessness” (Greenfield 1). As shown by the symptoms, internet addiction is a growing problem that current adolescents face. This fear is far more than justified as hundreds of studies have sampled and diagnosed individuals combatting this addiction. Another negative impact of internet addiction is that it can isolate one from the rest of the world and cause them to neglect things that are happening around them. As the American population grows, more and more children are born into poverty. Even in the world’s wealthiest nation, you will find 45.3 million people struggling to put food on the table. These are families of poverty - families with children who do not have the appropriate basic resources to properly raise their children. The official U.S. government poverty threshold for a family of four is currently set at $23,021. According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, in the United States alone, the percentage of children living in families below the poverty level increased from 15.6 percent in 2001 to 21.4 percent in 2011, and has continued to increase. Now, there are 16.1 million stunted in the rut of poverty. That is 16.1 million children are unable to properly grow and develop into a healthy member of society because of unsatisfying environmental factors. There is little information about the may mental health implications of spending early years in poverty. There are many consequences of growing up in poverty. Depression, communication issues, and academic issues are just the tip of the iceberg. My research will be focusing on how living life in poverty has an immense impact on children’s social interaction skills.

There are great differences and cultural variations in what individuals will experience social relationships during the course of their life. Some generalisations are listed in the table.

To begin with, social anxiety is clearly shown in those who are addicted to the screen. Jeffery Green on NaturalBlaze.com states "By not developing the ability to interact with others face-to-face, future adult relationships for the children will be impeded. Employment, romance, friendships and simple social etiquette will be limited and awkward if a child never develops normal social skills." The statement is blunt and it deserves to be, social do affect our everyday lives, like "Employment, romance, friendships and simple social etiquette...". Without social skills life will be much more challenging, they cant get jobs as easily, they don't marry (a problem that is happening in Japan), and the lack of social etiquette will make them seem like "they are out of their minds".

I am Fowzia Mohamed and I believe having a Strong social-emotional skills and competencies are crucial to young children’s development. I am easy going and ass sometime strong person and I have ability to read different children's emotional and I have a direct effect on children’s future health and peer relationships, and they may also be important for learning: I able to control children who have trouble controlling their emotions and behaviors have been found to have little direction, to be less involved in and less positive about their role as learners, and to have fewer chance for learning from peers. Computer use is a solitary activity, and it can lead to computer addiction. Nowadays, technology seems to create, a glass ceiling to the children, it tends to stop children to develop appropriate social skills. In the progress of growing up, social skills are essential not only for communicating with fellows, but for developing self-esteem and collaborating within the social community. Underdeveloped social skills can ruin children’s childhood or even their life after, where it might end up in loneliness and depression, which are detrimental to health, relationships and academics. Which brings no benefit, but all sorts of negatives to children.

Children’s social and emotional development can be supported by giving children lots of praise for their achievements and when they listen and do as they are told to do. It can also be supported by giving children the guidance they need but at the same time making sure to respect their choices and also giving children chance to meet and spend time with other children and adults. We have to give the children the support and encouragement they need and the right amount of supervision while they are doing an activity. This provides opportunities to make decisions for them and get to learn the consequences of their decisions. We have to make sure we are listening to the children and what they have to say and their opinions, this will provide the children with opportunities where they can take responsibility.

Developmental areas include social and emotional, language, motor, cognition, and in addition a child will make approaches towards learning as well (Davis, 1998). Language development is very important during this time and computers help since children are exposed to them for reading and writing purposes. Also, it gives opportunities for them to be motivated to interact with other children if they are in groups. Research has shown that computer play encourages longer more complex speech and development of fluency (Baur, 1998). Cognitively, technology use is connected to children and the use of it can lead to greater motivation and self-direction. Development is very important socially, and placing children in groups or pairs helps interaction between their peers. This helps increased levels of spoken communication and cooperation that were demonstrated in a study.

The amount of time a child spends on the computer can affect how well they socialize with people in the real world. Children and teens sometimes interact with one another in person by reiterating what they would say to someone on the Internet. One can become very lazy and unwilling to do anything physical but sit on the computer because they do not have to leave their house to talk to or see people anymore.

Since 2000, various PP interventions at many schools have been adopted (Huppert & Cooper, 2014). Schools play an increasingly important role in assisting children to develop cognitive, social and emotional skills (Waters, 2011), and since most of children’s waking hours of the day are spent in school, it is a natural setting for wellbeing to be educated, recognised and encouraged (Proctor, 2014). The children are facing increasing levels of depression and distress worldwide (Shoshani & Steinmetz, 2013), and therefore it is critical that the children are equipped with skills that not only help them to prevent mental illnesses, but also allow them to have higher order cognitive, social and emotional skills that would lead them to have meaningful and good lives (Waters, 2011; White, 2016).

The study tries to compare the social skill levels of 97 students in the Department of Social Work Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences, Hacettepe University, who participate and those who do not participate in activities outside classroom. As a young child it is vital to have an attached relationship with your primary caregivers. John Bowlby --- a British psychologist, psychiatrist, and psychoanalyst, who specializes in child development --- introduced a theory that attached relationships allow emotional support and comfort for infants, only if the caregiver is in the child’s life for a long enough periods of time (Susskind, 1). He was the first person to explore the idea of the attachment theory. Parents, siblings, and peers all play a big role in a child’s social development from infancy through adulthood (Susskind, 1). If these relationships are constantly disrupted from people being removed from the child’s life, children will typically have a harder time forming good social behaviors and relationships. While some people grew up without stable caregivers from a young age can grow into adults with completely normal social behaviors, ultimately, children from these situations tend to have a harder time forming proper social behaviors and friendships in adulthood. Therefore it’s necessary for kids to have stable relationships with their parental figures or primary guardians from a young age in order to form their own relationships in the future.

Individuals develop a comprehension of social and moral development at a young age. Over the span of a lifetime, an individual will proceed through eight prominent levels of transformation that enhances a particular developmental function. (Ormrod, 2014). Erik Erikson, universally respected as a primary philosopher of the 20th century, founded the eight prominent levels of transformation which focus on individuals from birth through advanced adulthood (Kivnick, & Wells, 2014).
