A hobby is an activity one develops to pursue an interest, outside of one’s regular occupation and engages in them primarily for pleasure. Hobbies range from fly fishing to leather working to star gazing, it can be anything you want it to be and anything you want to do. Having a hobby helps to make you a more interesting person and it can give you the opportunity to meet new people with similar interests. A chain of events may lead you to a new hobby which you had never considered or thought of before. For instance, take the avid reader of fantasy novels, which in itself is a hobby. He watches as he wanders through the encampments, seeing swords and armor stacked neatly in racks or against a nearby tree. His path takes him into merchant’s row, a collection of people who have taken a hobby such as sewing or metal working and have applied it to create merchandise specific to the SCA. Wandering further, he finds himself at the edge of the tournament field, where he finds a few people suited in armor and practicing against one another for the upcoming battle. As a result of his visit to the SCA event, he has seen and discovered several hobbies he can pursue. Attending events in themselves, the researching the historical period and costumes, is one hobby. He may decide to try his skills on the battlefield wearing armor and fighting or designing and making of armor and weapons. He may already have another hobby, such as leather working that he can adapt and apply to this new venture. In contrast though, over indulgence in a hobby can lead to adverse consequences. “Everyone should have an outlet and a special interest that they enjoy doing for themselves. Self indulgence, to a point, is quite healthy.” (Summers, 2010) On the other hand, if the hobby is very expensive, you could wind up in debt or unable to pay your bills from aggressively pursuing this hobby.
